1 Hear this, all you peoples. Listen, all you inhabitants of the world,Hear this, all ye peoples; Give ear, all ye inhabitants of the world,지휘자를 위하여. 고라 자손의 시. 모든 백성들아, 이 말을 들으라. 세상에 사는 모든 사람들아, 귀를 기울이라.
2 both low and high, rich and poor together.Both low and high, Rich and poor together.낮은 사람이든 높은 사람이든, 부유한 사람이든 가난한 사람이든 다 함께 들으라.
3 My mouth will speak words of wisdom. My heart will utter understanding.My mouth shall speak wisdom; And the meditation of my heart shall be of understanding.내 입은 지혜의 말을 전하고, 내 마음은 깨달음을 말하리라.
4 I will incline my ear to a proverb. I will solve my riddle on the harp.I will incline mine ear to a parable: I will open my dark saying upon the harp.내가 잠언에 귀를 기울이고, 수금을 타며 내 수수께끼를 풀어내리라.
5 Why should I fear in the days of evil, when iniquity at my heels surrounds me?Wherefore should I fear in the days of evil, When iniquity at my heels compasseth me about?악한 자들의 날에, 나를 따라붙는 죄악이 나를 에워쌀 때, 내가 무엇을 두려워하랴?
6 Those who trust in their wealth, and boast in the multitude of their riches—They that trust in their wealth, And boast themselves in the multitude of their riches;자기 재물을 의지하고 많은 부를 자랑하는 자들이 있으나—
7 none of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give God a ransom for him.None of them can by any means redeem his brother, Nor give to God a ransom for him그들 중 누구도 결코 자기 형제를 속량하지 못하며, 그를 위하여 하나님께 속전을 바치지 못하느니라.
8 For the redemption of their life is costly, no payment is ever enough,( For the redemption of their life is costly, And it faileth for ever ),사람의 생명을 속량하는 값은 너무 비싸서, 어떤 대가로도 결코 충분하지 못하니,
9 that he should live on forever, that he should not see corruption.That he should still live alway, That he should not see corruption.그가 영원히 살아 썩음을 보지 않게 할 수는 없느니라.
10 For he sees that wise men die; likewise the fool and the senseless perish, and leave their wealth to others.For he shall see it. Wise men die; The fool and the brutish alike perish, And leave their wealth to others.지혜로운 사람도 죽고, 어리석은 사람과 우매한 사람도 똑같이 멸망하여 자기 재물을 남에게 남기고 떠나는 것을 그가 보느니라.
11 Their inward thought is that their houses will endure forever, and their dwelling places to all generations. They name their lands after themselves.Their inward thought is, that their houses shall continue for ever, And their dwelling-places to all generations; They call their lands after their own names.그들은 속으로 자기 집이 영원히 이어지고 자기 거처가 대대로 남으리라 생각하여, 자기들의 땅을 자기 이름으로 부르는도다.
12 But man, despite his riches, doesn’t endure. He is like the animals that perish.But man being in honor abideth not: He is like the beasts that perish.그러나 사람은 재물이 있어도 영원하지 못하니, 멸망하는 짐승과 같도다.
13 This is the destiny of those who are foolish, and of those who approve their sayings. Selah.This their way is their folly: Yet after them men approve their sayings. [Selah이것이 어리석은 자들의 운명이요, 그들의 말을 옳다 하는 자들의 결말이로다. (셀라)
14 They are appointed as a flock for Sheol. Death shall be their shepherd. The upright shall have dominion over them in the morning. Their beauty shall decay in Sheol, far from their mansion.They are appointed as a flock for Sheol; Death shall be their shepherd: And the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning; And their beauty shall be for Sheol to consume, That there be no habitation for it.그들은 양 떼처럼 스올로 정해졌으니, 죽음이 그들의 목자가 되리라. 아침이 되면 정직한 사람들이 그들을 다스리며, 그들의 아름다움은 스올에서 그 화려한 거처와 멀리 떨어져 썩어 없어지리라.
15 But God will redeem my soul from the power of Sheol, for he will receive me. Selah.But God will redeem my soul from the power of Sheol; For he will receive me. [Selah그러나 하나님은 내 영혼을 스올의 권세에서 속량하시리니, 그가 나를 받으시리로다. (셀라)
16 Don’t be afraid when a man is made rich, when the glory of his house is increased;Be not thou afraid when one is made rich, When the glory of his house is increased:어떤 사람이 부유해지고 그 집의 영화가 더해질 때에 두려워하지 말라.
17 for when he dies he will carry nothing away. His glory won’t descend after him.For when he dieth he shall carry nothing away; His glory shall not descend after him.그가 죽을 때에는 아무것도 가져가지 못하며, 그의 영화는 그를 따라 내려가지 못하리라.
18 Though while he lived he blessed his soul — and men praise you when you do well for yourself—Though while he lived he blessed his soul ( And men praise thee, when thou doest well to thyself),그가 살아 있는 동안에는 스스로 복되다 여기고—사람들도 네가 잘되면 너를 칭찬하지만—
19 he shall go to the generation of his fathers. They shall never see the light.He shall go to the generation of his fathers; They shall never see the light.그는 자기 조상들의 세대에게로 가리니, 그들은 결코 다시 빛을 보지 못하리라.
20 A man who has riches without understanding, is like the animals that perish.Man that is in honor, and understandeth not, Is like the beasts that perish.깨달음 없이 재물만 가진 사람은 멸망하는 짐승과 같도다.
