Human Depravity. To the chief musician upon Mahalath, Maschil. A psalm of David. 1 The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. Corrupt are they, and have done abominable iniquity: there is none that doeth good. 2 God looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, that did seek God. 3 Every one of them is gone back: they are altogether become filthy; there is none that doeth good, no, not one. 4 Have the workers of iniquity no knowledge? who eat up my people as they eat bread: they have not called upon God. 5 There were they in great fear, where no fear was: for God hath scattered the bones of him that encampeth against thee: thou hast put them to shame, because God hath despised them. 6 Oh that the salvation of Israel were come out of Zion! When God bringeth back the captivity of his people, Jacob shall rejoice, and Israel shall be glad. This psalm was opened before, and therefore we shall here only observe, in short, some things concerning sin, in order to the increasing of our sorrow for it and hatred of it. 1. The fact of sin. Is that proved? Can the charge be made out? Yes, God is a witness to it, an unexceptionable witness: from the place of his holiness he looks on the children of men, and sees how little good there is among them, Psalms 53:2 ; Psalms 53:2 . All the sinfulness of their hearts and lives in naked and open before him. 2. The fault of sin. Is there any harm in it? Yes, it is iniquity ( Psalms 53:1 ; Psalms 53:4 ); it is an unrighteous thing; it is that which there is no good in ( Psalms 53:1 ; Psalms 53:3 ); it is an evil thing; it is the worst of evils; it is that which makes this world such an evil world as it is; it is going back from God, Psalms 53:3 ; Psalms 53:3 . 3. The fountain of sin. How comes it that men are so bad? Surely it is because there is no fear of God before their eyes: they say in their hearts, "There is no God at all to call us to an account, none that we need to stand in awe of." Men's bad practices flow from their bad principles; if they profess to know God, yet in works, because in thoughts, they deny him. 4. The folly of sin. He is a fool (in the account of God, whose judgment we are sure is right) that harbours such corrupt thoughts. Atheists, whether in opinion or practice, are the greatest fools in the world. Those that do not seek God do not understand; they are like brute-beasts that have no understanding; for man is distinguished from the brutes, not so much by the powers of reason as by a capacity for religion. The workers of iniquity, whatever they pretend to, have no knowledge; those may truly be said to know nothing that do not know God, Psalms 53:4 ; Psalms 53:4 . 5. The filthiness of sin. Sinners are corrupt ( Psalms 53:1 ; Psalms 53:1 ); their nature is vitiated and spoiled, and the more noble the nature is the more vile it is when it is depraved, as that of the angels. Corruptio optimi est pessima--The best things, when corrupted, become the worst. Their iniquity is abominable; it is odious to the holy God, and it renders them so; whereas otherwise he hates nothing that he has made. It makes men filthy, altogether filthy. Wilful sinners are offensive in the nostrils of the God of heaven and of the holy angels. What decency soever proud sinners pretend to, it is certain that wickedness is the greatest defilement in the world. 6. The fruit of sin. See to what a degree of barbarity it brings men at last; when men's hearts are hardened through the deceitfulness of sin see their cruelty to their brethren, that are bone of their bone--because they will not run with them to the same excess of riot, they eat them up as they eat bread; as if they had not only become beasts, but beasts of prey. And see their contempt of God at the same time. They have not called upon him, but scorn to be beholden to him. 7. The fear and shame that attend sin ( Psalms 53:5 ; Psalms 53:5 ): There were those in great fear who had made God their enemy; their own guilty consciences frightened them, and filled them with horror, though otherwise there was no apparent cause of fear. The wicked flees when none pursues. See the ground of this fear; it is because God has formerly scattered the bones of those that encamped against his people, not only broken their power and dispersed their forces, but slain them, and reduced their bodies to dry bones, like those scattered at the grave's mouth, Psalms 141:7 . Such will be the fate of those that lay siege to the camp of the saints and the beloved city, Revelation 20:9 . The apprehensions of this cannot but put those into frights that eat up God's people. This enables the virgin, the daughter of Zion, to put them to shame, and expose them, because God has despised them, to laugh at them, because he that sits in heaven laughs at them. We need not look upon those enemies with fear whom God looks upon with contempt. If he despises them, we may. 8. The faith of the saints, and their hope and power touching the cure of this great evil, Psalms 53:6 ; Psalms 53:6 . There will come a Saviour, a great salvation, a salvation from sin. Oh that it might be hastened! for it will bring in glorious and joyful times. There were those in the Old-Testament times that looked and hoped, that prayed and waited, for this redemption. (1.) God will, in due time, save his church from the sinful malice of its enemies, which will bring joy to Jacob and Israel, that have long been in a mournful melancholy state. Such salvations were often wrought, and all typical of the everlasting triumphs of the glorious church. (2.) He will save all believers from their own iniquities, that they may not be led captive by them, which will be everlasting matter of joy to them. **1. 죄의 사실**

그 사실이 증명될 수 있는가? 이 고발은 입증될 수 있는가? 그렇다. 하나님께서 이에 대한 증인이시며, 논란의 여지가 없는 증인이시다. 그분은 거룩하신 곳에서 인생을 굽어살피시며, 그들 가운데 선이 얼마나 적은지를 보신다(시 53:2). 그들 마음과 삶의 모든 죄악이 그분 앞에 완전히 드러나 있다.

**2. 죄의 책임**

죄에 해가 있는가? 그렇다. 그것은 불의이다(시 53:1, 4). 불의한 것이며, 그 안에 선이 없다(시 53:1, 3). 그것은 악한 것이며, 모든 악 중에 가장 나쁜 것이다. 이 세상이 이토록 악한 세상이 된 것은 죄 때문이다. 그것은 하나님께로부터 돌아서는 것이다(시 53:3).

**3. 죄의 근원**

**4. 죄의 어리석음**

하나님의 판단에 따르면—하나님의 판단은 반드시 옳다—그러한 부패한 생각을 품는 자는 어리석은 자이다. 사상적으로든 실천적으로든 무신론자들은 세상에서 가장 큰 어리석은 자들이다. 하나님을 찾지 않는 자들은 지각이 없다. 그들은 이해력이 없는 짐승과 같다. 인간이 짐승과 구별되는 것은 이성의 능력만큼이나, 아니 그것보다도 더 종교에 대한 능력으로 구별된다. 불의를 행하는 자들은 어떤 지식도 없다고 할 수 있다(시 53:4). 하나님을 알지 못하는 자는 아무것도 모른다고 해도 과언이 아니다.

**5. 죄의 더러움**

죄인들은 부패하였다(시 53:1). 그들의 본성은 오염되고 망가졌으며, 본성이 고귀할수록 타락하면 더욱 천해진다. 이는 천사들의 경우도 마찬가지이다. **6. 죄의 열매**

죄가 사람들을 결국 어느 정도의 야만성으로 이끄는지 보라. 죄의 기만으로 마음이 완고해진 사람들이 그 형제들, 곧 자기들과 함께 방종한 삶으로 치닫기를 거부한다는 이유만으로 얼마나 잔인해지는지 보라. 그들은 형제들을 떡 먹듯이 먹어 삼킨다. 마치 짐승이 되었을 뿐만 아니라, 맹수가 된 것처럼 말이다. 또한 이와 동시에 그들이 하나님을 얼마나 멸시하는지 보라. 그들은 하나님을 부르지 않으며, 그분께 신세를 지는 것을 비웃는다.

**7. 죄에 따르는 두려움과 수치**

하나님을 원수로 삼은 자들은 큰 두려움 가운데 있었다(시 53:5). 그들 자신의 죄책감이 그들을 두렵게 하고 공포로 가득 채웠다. 눈에 보이는 두려운 원인이 없었는데도 불구하고 말이다. **8. 성도들의 믿음, 소망, 그리고 이 큰 악을 치유할 능력**

구원자가 오실 것이요, 위대한 구원이 오리니, 죄로부터의 구원이다(시 53:6). 오, 그것이 속히 이루어지기를! 그것이 이루어지면 영광스럽고 기쁜 시대가 열릴 것이다. 구약 시대에도 이 구원을 바라보고 소망하며, 기도하고 기다린 자들이 있었다.

(1) 하나님께서는 때가 되면 원수들의 죄악스러운 악의로부터 그분의 교회를 구원하실 것이다. 이는 오랫동안 슬픔과 우울 속에 있던 야곱과 이스라엘에게 기쁨을 가져다줄 것이다. 이러한 구원들은 종종 이루어졌으며, 모두 영광스러운 교회의 영원한 승리를 예표하는 것들이었다.

God speaks once, yea, twice, and it were well if man would even then perceive it; God, in this psalm, speaks twice, for this is the same almost verbatim with the fourteenth psalm. The scope of it is to convince us of our sins, to set us a blushing and trembling because of them; and this is what we are with so much difficulty brought to that there is need of line upon line to this purport. The word, as a convincing word, is compared to a hammer, the strokes whereof must be frequently repeated. God, by the psalmist here, I. Shows us how bad we are, Psalms 53:1 . II. Proves it upon us by his own certain knowledge, Psalms 53:2 ; Psalms 53:3 . III. He speaks terror to persecutors, the worst of sinners, Psalms 53:4 ; Psalms 53:5 . IV. He speaks encouragement to God's persecuted people, Psalms 53:6 . Some little variation there is between Psalms 14:1-7 ; Psalms 53:1-6 , but none considerable, only between Psalms 14:5 ; Psalms 14:6 ; Psalms 53:5 , there, and Psalms 14:5 ; Psalms 14:6 ; Psalms 53:5 here; some expressions there used are here left out, concerning the shame which the wicked put upon God's people, and instead of that, is here foretold the shame which God would put upon the wicked, which alteration, with some others, he made by divine direction when he delivered it the second time to the chief musician. 하나님께서는 한 번, 아니 두 번 말씀하신다. 사람이 그것을 깨닫기만 한다면 얼마나 좋겠는가. 하나님께서는 이 시편에서 두 번 말씀하시는데, 이 시편은 14편과 거의 글자 그대로 동일하기 때문이다. 이 시편의 목적은 우리로 하여금 자신의 죄를 깨닫게 하고, 그 죄로 인해 부끄러워하며 두려워하게 하는 것이다. 그런데 우리를 이 깨달음에 이르게 하는 일이 너무도 어렵기 때문에, 이를 위해 반복하여 선포할 필요가 있다. 말씀은 죄를 책망하는 말씀으로서 망치에 비유되는데, 망치질은 자주 반복되어야 효과가 있다.

14편(시 14:1-7)과 53편(시 53:1-6) 사이에는 약간의 차이가 있지만 중요한 차이는 없다. 다만 시편 14:5-6과 53:5 사이에 차이가 있다. 14편에서 사용된 일부 표현들, 곧 악인들이 하나님의 백성에게 가한 수치에 관한 내용이 53편에서는 생략되어 있고, 그 대신 하나님께서 악인들에게 가하실 수치가 예언되어 있다. 이 변경 및 몇 가지 다른 수정들은, 다윗이 이 시편을 두 번째로 성가대장에게 전달할 때 하나님의 지시에 따라 이루어진 것이다.
