1 At that time, Judah went down from his brothers, and visited a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah.And it came to pass at that time, that Judah went down from his brethren, and turned in to a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah.그 무렵에 유다가 자기 형제들에게서 내려가, 히라라는 이름의 한 아둘람 사람에게로 들어갔다.
2 There, Judah saw the daughter of a certain Canaanite man named Shua. He took her, and went in to her.And Judah saw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite whose name was Shua; and he took her, and went in unto her.거기에서 유다는 수아라는 이름을 가진 한 가나안 사람의 딸을 보고, 그 여자를 아내로 맞아 그에게로 들어갔다.
3 She conceived, and bore a son; and he named him Er.And she conceived, and bare a son; and he called his name Er.그 여자가 임신하여 아들을 낳으니, 유다가 그 이름을 엘이라 하였다.
4 She conceived again, and bore a son; and she named him Onan.And she conceived again, and bare a son; and she called his name Onan.그 여자가 다시 임신하여 아들을 낳고, 그 이름을 오난이라 하였다.
5 She yet again bore a son, and named him Shelah. He was at Chezib when she bore him.And she yet again bare a son, and called his name Shelah: and he was at Chezib, when she bare him.그 여자가 또다시 아들을 낳고 그 이름을 셀라라 하였는데, 그를 낳을 때에 유다는 그십에 있었다.
6 Judah took a wife for Er, his firstborn, and her name was Tamar.And Judah took a wife for Er his first-born, and her name was Tamar.유다가 자기 맏아들 엘을 위하여 아내를 얻어 주었는데, 그 이름은 다말이었다.
7 Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in Yahweh’s sight. So Yahweh killed him.And Er, Judah’s first-born, was wicked in the sight of Jehovah; and Jehovah slew him.그런데 유다의 맏아들 엘이 여호와께서 보시기에 악하므로, 여호와께서 그를 죽이셨다.
8 Judah said to Onan, “ Go in to your brother’s wife, and perform the duty of a husband’s brother to her, and raise up offspring for your brother.”And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother’s wife, and perform the duty of a husband’s brother unto her, and raise up seed to thy brother.유다가 오난에게 말하였다. "네 형의 아내에게로 들어가 시동생의 의무를 다하여, 네 형을 위하여 후손을 일으켜 주어라."
9 Onan knew that the offspring wouldn’t be his; and when he went in to his brother’s wife, he spilled his semen on the ground, lest he should give offspring to his brother.And Onan knew that the seed would not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother’s wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest he should give seed to his brother.오난은 그 후손이 자기 것이 되지 않을 줄을 알았으므로, 형의 아내에게로 들어갈 때마다 형에게 후손을 주지 않으려고 땅에 쏟아 버렸다.
10 The thing which he did was evil in Yahweh’s sight, and he killed him also.And the thing which he did was evil in the sight of Jehovah: and he slew him also.그가 행한 일이 여호와께서 보시기에 악하므로, 여호와께서 그도 죽이셨다.
11 Then Judah said to Tamar, his daughter-in-law, “ Remain a widow in your father’s house, until Shelah, my son, is grown up;” for he said, “ Lest he also die, like his brothers.” Tamar went and lived in her father’s house.Then said Judah to Tamar his daughter-in-law, Remain a widow in thy father’s house, till Shelah my son be grown up; for he said, Lest he also die, like his brethren. And Tamar went and dwelt in her father’s house.그러자 유다가 자기 며느리 다말에게 말하였다. "내 아들 셀라가 자랄 때까지 네 친정 아버지의 집에서 과부로 지내라." 이는 그가 "셀라도 그의 형들처럼 죽을까 두렵다"고 생각하였기 때문이다. 다말은 가서 자기 친정 아버지의 집에서 지냈다.
12 After many days, Shua’s daughter, the wife of Judah, died. Judah was comforted, and went up to his sheep shearers to Timnah, he and his friend Hirah, the Adullamite.And in process of time Shua’s daughter, the wife of Judah, died; and Judah was comforted, and went up unto his sheep-shearers to Timnah, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.오랜 세월이 지난 뒤에 수아의 딸 곧 유다의 아내가 죽었다. 유다는 위로를 받고 나서, 자기 친구인 아둘람 사람 히라와 함께 자기 양털 깎는 자들에게 딤나로 올라갔다.
13 Tamar was told, “ Behold, your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep.”And it was told Tamar, saying, Behold, thy father-in-law goeth up to Timnah to shear his sheep.사람들이 다말에게 알려 주었다. "보십시오, 당신의 시아버지가 양털을 깎으러 딤나로 올라갑니다."
14 She took off the garments of her widowhood, and covered herself with her veil, and wrapped herself, and sat in the gate of Enaim, which is on the way to Timnah; for she saw that Shelah was grown up, and she wasn’t given to him as a wife.And she put off from her the garments of her widowhood, and covered herself with her veil, and wrapped herself, and sat in the gate of Enaim, which is by the way to Timnah; for she saw that Shelah was grown up, and she was not given unto him to wife.그러자 다말은 자기 과부의 옷을 벗고 너울로 자기를 가리고 몸을 감싼 뒤, 딤나로 가는 길가에 있는 에나임 입구에 앉았다. 이는 셀라가 다 자랐는데도 자기가 그의 아내로 주어지지 않은 것을 보았기 때문이다.
15 When Judah saw her, he thought that she was a prostitute, for she had covered her face.When Judah saw her, he thought her to be a harlot; for she had covered her face.유다가 그 여자를 보고 창녀로 여겼으니, 그가 자기 얼굴을 가렸기 때문이다.
16 He turned to her by the way, and said, “ Please come, let me come in to you,” for he didn’t know that she was his daughter-in-law. She said, “ What will you give me, that you may come in to me?”And he turned unto her by the way, and said, Come, I pray thee, let me come in unto thee: for he knew not that she was his daughter-in-law. And she said, What wilt thou give me, that thou mayest come in unto me?유다가 길가에서 그 여자에게로 돌아서서 말하였다. "자, 부탁이니 네게로 들어가게 해 다오." 이는 그가 그 여자가 자기 며느리인 줄을 몰랐기 때문이다. 그 여자가 말하였다. "제게로 들어오시려면 무엇을 주시겠습니까?"
17 He said, “ I will send you a young goat from the flock.” She said, “ Will you give me a pledge, until you send it?”And he said, I will send thee a kid of the goats from the flock. And she said, Wilt thou give me a pledge, till thou send it?유다가 말하였다. "내 양 떼에서 새끼 염소 한 마리를 보내 주겠다." 그 여자가 말하였다. "그것을 보내실 때까지 제게 담보물을 주시겠습니까?"
18 He said, “ What pledge will I give you?” She said, “ Your signet and your cord, and your staff that is in your hand.” He gave them to her, and came in to her, and she conceived by him.And he said, What pledge shall I give thee? And she said, Thy signet and thy cord, and thy staff that is in thy hand. And he gave them to her, and came in unto her, and she conceived by him.유다가 말하였다. "무슨 담보물을 네게 주랴?" 그 여자가 말하였다. "당신의 도장과 그 끈, 그리고 당신 손에 있는 지팡이를 주십시오." 유다가 그것들을 그 여자에게 주고 그에게로 들어가니, 그 여자가 그로 말미암아 임신하였다.
19 She arose, and went away, and put off her veil from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood.And she arose, and went away, and put off her veil from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood.그 여자는 일어나 떠나가서 자기 너울을 벗고 다시 과부의 옷을 입었다.
20 Judah sent the young goat by the hand of his friend, the Adullamite, to receive the pledge from the woman’s hand, but he didn’t find her.And Judah sent the kid of the goats by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive the pledge from the woman’s hand: but he found her not.유다가 그 여자의 손에서 담보물을 받아 오게 하려고 자기 친구 아둘람 사람의 손에 새끼 염소를 들려 보냈으나, 그가 그 여자를 찾지 못하였다.
21 Then he asked the men of her place, saying, “ Where is the prostitute, that was at Enaim by the road?” They said, “ There has been no prostitute here.”Then he asked the men of her place, saying, Where is the prostitute, that was at Enaim by the wayside? And they said, There hath been no prostitute here.그래서 그가 그곳 사람들에게 물었다. "에나임 길가에 있던 창녀가 어디에 있습니까?" 그들이 말하였다. "여기에는 창녀가 없었소."
22 He returned to Judah, and said, “ I haven’t found her; and also the men of the place said, ‘ There has been no prostitute here.’”And he returned to Judah, and said, I have not found her; and also the men of the place said, There hath been no prostitute here.그가 유다에게 돌아와 말하였다. "내가 그 여자를 찾지 못했고, 또 그곳 사람들도 '여기에는 창녀가 없었다'고 하더이다."
23 Judah said, “ Let her keep it, lest we be shamed. Behold, I sent this young goat, and you haven’t found her.”And Judah said, Let her take it to her, lest we be put to shame: behold, I sent this kid, and thou hast not found her.유다가 말하였다. "우리가 수치를 당하지 않도록 그 여자가 그것을 가지게 하라. 보라, 내가 이 새끼 염소를 보냈으나 네가 그 여자를 찾지 못하였다."
24 About three months later, Judah was told, “ Tamar, your daughter-in-law, has played the prostitute. Moreover, behold, she is with child by prostitution.” Judah said, “ Bring her out, and let her be burned.”And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told Judah, saying, Tamar thy daughter-in-law hath played the harlot; and moreover, behold, she is with child by whoredom. And Judah said, Bring her forth, and let her be burnt.약 석 달쯤 지난 뒤에 사람들이 유다에게 알렸다. "당신의 며느리 다말이 창녀 짓을 하였고, 게다가 보십시오, 그가 음행으로 임신까지 하였습니다." 유다가 말하였다. "그 여자를 끌어내어 불태워라."
25 When she was brought out, she sent to her father-in-law, saying, “ I am with child by the man who owns these.” She also said, “ Please discern whose these are — the signet, and the cords, and the staff.”When she was brought forth, she sent to her father-in-law, saying, By the man, whose these are, am I with child: and she said, Discern, I pray thee, whose are these, the signet, and the cords, and the staff.그 여자가 끌려 나오면서 자기 시아버지에게 사람을 보내어 말하였다. "이 물건들의 임자인 그 사람으로 말미암아 제가 임신하였습니다." 그가 또 말하였다. "부탁이니, 이 도장과 끈과 지팡이가 누구의 것인지 살펴보십시오."
26 Judah acknowledged them, and said, “ She is more righteous than I, because I didn’t give her to Shelah, my son.” He knew her again no more.And Judah acknowledged them, and said, She is more righteous than I, forasmuch as I gave her not to Shelah my son. And he knew her again no more.유다가 그것들을 알아보고 말하였다. "그 여자가 나보다 의롭다. 이는 내가 그를 내 아들 셀라에게 주지 않았기 때문이다." 그리고 유다는 다시는 그 여자를 가까이하지 않았다.
27 In the time of her travail, behold, twins were in her womb.And it came to pass in the time of her travail, that, behold, twins were in her womb.그 여자가 해산할 때가 되었는데, 보라, 그 태 속에 쌍둥이가 있었다.
28 When she travailed, one put out a hand, and the midwife took and tied a scarlet thread on his hand, saying, “ This came out first.”And it came to pass, when she travailed, that one put out a hand: and the midwife took and bound upon his hand a scarlet thread, saying, This came out first.그 여자가 해산할 때에 한 아이가 손을 내미니, 산파가 그 손에 붉은 실을 매며 말하였다. "이 아이가 먼저 나왔다."
29 As he drew back his hand, behold, his brother came out, and she said, “ Why have you made a breach for yourself?” Therefore his name was called Perez.And it came to pass, as he drew back his hand, that, behold, his brother came out: and she said, Wherefore hast thou made a breach for thyself? therefore his name was called Perez.그런데 그 아이가 손을 도로 들이는 순간, 보라, 그 형제가 나오니, 그 여자가 말하였다. "어찌하여 네가 너 자신을 위하여 터뜨리고 나왔느냐?" 그러므로 그의 이름을 베레스라 하였다.
30 Afterward his brother came out, who had the scarlet thread on his hand, and his name was called Zerah.And afterward came out his brother, that had the scarlet thread upon his hand: and his name was called Zerah.그 뒤에 손에 붉은 실을 맨 그의 형제가 나오니, 그의 이름을 세라라 하였다.
