Hezekiah's Vanity. . 1 At that time Merodach-baladan, the son of Baladan, king of Babylon, sent letters and a present to Hezekiah: for he had heard that he had been sick, and was recovered. 2 And Hezekiah was glad of them, and showed them the house of his precious things, the silver, and the gold, and the spices, and the precious ointment, and all the house of his armour, and all that was found in his treasures: there was nothing in his house, nor in all his dominion, that Hezekiah showed them not. 3 Then came Isaiah the prophet unto king Hezekiah, and said unto him, What said these men? and from whence came they unto thee? And Hezekiah said, They are come from a far country unto me, even from Babylon. 4 Then said he, What have they seen in thine house? And Hezekiah answered, All that is in mine house have they seen: there is nothing among my treasures that I have not showed them. Hence we may learn these lessons:-- 1. That humanity and common civility teach us to rejoice with our friends and neighbours when they rejoice, and to congratulate them on their deliverances, and particularly their recoveries from sickness. The king of Babylon, having heard that Hezekiah had been sick, and had recovered, sent to compliment him upon the occasion. If Christians be unneighbourly, heathens will shame them. 2. It becomes us to give honour to those whom our God puts honour upon. The sun was the Babylonians' god; and when they understood that it was with a respect to Hezekiah that the sun, to their great surprise, went back ten degrees, on such a day, they thought themselves obliged to do Hezekiah all the honour they could. Will all people thus walk in the name of their God, and shall not we? 3. Those that do not value good men for their goodness may yet be brought to pay them great respect by other inducements, and for the sake of their secular interests. The king of Babylon made his court to Hezekiah, not because he was pious, but because he was prosperous, as the Philistines coveted an alliance with Isaac because they saw the Lord was with him, Genesis 26:28 . The king of Babylon was an enemy to the king of Assyria, and therefore was fond of Hezekiah, because the Assyrians were so much weakened by the power of his God. 4. It is a hard matter to keep the spirit low in the midst of great advancements. Hezekiah is an instance of it: he was a wise and good man, but, when one miracle after another was wrought in his favour, he found it hard to keep his heart from being lifted up, nay, a little thing then drew him into the snare of pride. Blessed Paul himself needed a thorn in the flesh, to keep him from being lifted up with the abundance of revelations. 5. We have need to watch over our own spirits when we are showing our friends our possessions, what we have done and what we have got, that we be not proud of them, as if our might or our merit had purchased and procured us this wealth. When we look upon our enjoyments, and have occasion to speak of them, it must be with humble acknowledgments of our own unworthiness and thankful acknowledgments of God's goodness, with a just value for the achievements of others and with an expectation of losses and changes, not dreaming that our mountain stands so strong but that it may soon be moved. 6. It is a great weakness for good men to value themselves much upon the civil respects that are paid them (yea, though there be something particular and uncommon in them) by the children of this world, and to be fond of their acquaintance. What a poor thing was it for Hezekiah, whom God has so dignified, to be thus over proud of the respect paid him by a heathen prince as if that added any thing to him! We ought to return the courtesies of such with interest, but not to be proud of them. 7. We must expect to be called to an account for the workings of our pride, though they are secret, and in such instances as we thought there was no harm in; and therefore we ought to call ourselves to an account for them; and when we have had company with us that have paid us respect, and been pleased with their entertainment, and commended every thing, we ought to be jealous over ourselves with a godly jealousy lest our hearts have been lifted up. As far as we see cause to suspect that this sly and subtle sin of pride has insinuated itself into our breasts, and mingled itself with our conversation, let us be ashamed of it, and, as Hezekiah here, ingenuously confess it and take shame to ourselves for it. return to ' Top of Page ' <a name="verses-5-8" class="com-number"

3. 선한 사람들의 선함을 소중히 여기지 않는 자들도 세속적인 이해관계 때문에 그들에게 큰 존경을 보일 수 있다. 바벨론 왕이 히스기야에게 예우를 갖춘 것은 그가 경건한 자이기 때문이 아니라 형통한 자이기 때문이었다. 마치 블레셋 사람들이 여호와께서 이삭과 함께하심을 보고 그와 동맹을 맺고자 했던 것처럼(창세기 26:28), 바벨론 왕은 앗시리아를 적대하고 있었기에 그 앗시리아 군대를 하나님의 능력으로 크게 꺾은 히스기야와 친분을 맺고 싶었다.
4. 큰 영예를 누리는 가운데 마음을 낮게 유지하기란 참으로 어렵다. 히스기야가 바로 그 실례이다. 그는 지혜롭고 선한 사람이었으나, 자신을 위하여 기적이 잇달아 일어나는 상황에서 마음이 높아지지 않기가 어려웠다. 오히려 사소한 일이 그를 교만의 덫으로 이끌었다. 복된 바울도 계시의 충만함으로 인해 마음이 교만해지지 않도록 육체에 가시를 받아야 했다(고린도후서 12:7).
5. 우리는 소유물을 지인에게 보여 주고 우리가 이룬 것과 소유한 것을 말할 때, 마치 우리의 능력이나 공로가 이 부를 얻게 해 준 것처럼 교만해지지 않도록 스스로의 심령을 경계해야 한다. 우리의 소유를 바라보고 그것을 말하게 될 때, 반드시 우리 자신의 무가치함을 겸손히 고백하고 하나님의 선하심에 감사하며, 타인의 성취를 바르게 평가하고 상실과 변화를 예상해야 한다. 우리의 산이 굳건하게 서 있다고 착각하여 곧 무너질 수 있음을 잊어서는 안 된다.
6. 선한 사람들이 세상 자녀들로부터 받는 사교적인 예우—설령 그것이 특별하고 비범한 것일지라도—를 지나치게 높이 평가하고 그 교제를 탐하는 것은 큰 약점이다. 하나님께서 그토록 존귀하게 여기신 히스기야가 이방 왕의 경의에 이처럼 우쭐해하는 것이 얼마나 초라한 일인가! 그런 예우가 그에게 어떤 유익을 더하는가! 세상 자녀들의 예우에 정중히 화답하는 것은 마땅하나, 그것을 자랑으로 여겨서는 안 된다.
7. 우리는 우리가 남모르게 품은 교만 때문에, 또한 해가 없다고 여겼던 일들 때문에 하나님 앞에서 심문을 받게 될 것을 기대해야 한다. 따라서 우리 스스로 먼저 자신을 심문해야 한다. 우리를 존중하는 손님들과 함께한 뒤, 그들이 우리를 칭찬하고 모든 것을 만족스럽게 여기고 돌아갔을 때, 우리는 혹시 우리의 마음이 높아지지 않았는지 경건한 두려움으로 살펴보아야 한다. 은밀하고 교묘한 교만의 죄가 우리 마음에 스며들어 대화 속에 뒤섞였음을 의심할 만한 이유가 있다면, 마땅히 부끄러워하고, 히스기야처럼 솔직하게 고백하며 스스로 수치를 감수해야 한다.

I S A I A H. CHAP. XXXIX. The story of this chapter likewise we had before, 2 Kings 20:12 , c. It is here repeated, not only as a very memorable and improvable passage, but because it concludes with a prophecy of the captivity in Babylon and as the former part of the prophecy of this book frequently referred to Sennacherib's invasion and the defeat of that, to which therefore the history of that was very fitly subjoined, so the latter part of this book speaks much of the Jews' captivity in Babylon and their deliverance out of that, to which therefore the first prediction of it, with the occasion thereof, is very fitly prefixed. We have here, I. The pride and folly of Hezekiah, in showing his treasures to the king of Babylon's ambassadors that were sent to congratulate him on his recovery, Isaiah 39:1 ; Isaiah 39:2 . II. Isaiah's examination of him concerning it, in God's name, and his confession of it, Isaiah 39:3 ; Isaiah 39:4 . III. The sentence passed upon him for it, that all his treasures should, in process of time, be carried to Babylon, Isaiah 39:5-7 . IV. Hezekiah's Vanity Punished. . 5 Then said Isaiah to Hezekiah, Hear the word of the LORD of hosts: 6 Behold, the days come, that all that is in thine house, and that which thy fathers have laid up in store until this day, shall be carried to Babylon: nothing shall be left, saith the LORD . 7 And of thy sons that shall issue from thee, which thou shalt beget, shall they take away; and they shall be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon. 8 Then said Hezekiah to Isaiah, Good is the word of the LORD which thou hast spoken. He said moreover, For there shall be peace and truth in my days. Hence let us observe, 1. That, if God love us, he will humble us, and will find some way or other to pull down our spirits when they are lifted up above measure. A mortifying message is sent to Hezekiah, that he might be humbled for the pride of his heart, and be convinced of the folly of it; for though God may suffer his people to fall into sin, as he did Hezekiah here, to prove him, that he might know all that was in his heart, yet he will not suffer them to lie still in it. 2. It is just with God to take that from us which we make the matter of our pride, and on which we build a carnal confidence. When David was proud of the numbers of his people God took a course to make them fewer; and when Hezekiah boasts of his treasures, and looks upon them with too great a complacency, he is told that he acts like the foolish traveller who shows his money and gold to one that proves a thief and is thereby tempted to rob him. 3. If we could but see things that will be, we should be ashamed of our thoughts of things that are. If Hezekiah had known that the seed and successors of this king of Babylon would hereafter be the ruin of his family and kingdom, he would not have complimented his ambassadors as he did; and, when the prophet told him that it would be so, we may well imagine how he was vexed at himself for what he had done. We cannot certainly foresee what will be, but are told, in general, All is vanity, and therefore it is vanity for us to take complacency and put confidence in any thing that goes under that character. 4. Those that are fond of an acquaintance or alliance with irreligious men will first or last have enough of it, and will have cause to repent it. Hezekiah thought himself very happy in the friendship of Babylon, though it was the mother of harlots and idolatries; but Babylon, who now courted Jerusalem, in process of time conquered her and carried her captive. Leagues with sinners, and leagues with sin too, will end thus; it is therefore our wisdom to keep at a distance from them. 5. Those that truly repent of their sins will take it well to be reproved for them and will be willing to be told of their faults. Hezekiah reckoned that word of the Lord good which discovered sin to him, and made him sensible that he had done amiss, which before he was not aware of. The language of true penitents is, Let the righteous smite me; it shall be a kindness; and the law is therefore good, because, being spiritual, in it sin appears sin, and exceedingly sinful. 6. True penitents will quietly submit, not only to the reproofs of the word, but to the rebukes of Providence for their sins. When Hezekiah was told of the punishment of his iniquity he said, Good is the word of the Lord, not only the mitigation of the sentence, but the sentence itself; he has nothing to object against the equity of it, but says Amen to the threatening. Those that see the evil of sin, and what it deserves, will justify God in all that is brought upon them for it, and own that he punishes them less than their iniquities deserve. 7. Though we must not be regardless of those that come after us, yet we must reckon ourselves well done by if there be peace and truth in our days, and better than we had reason to expect. 2. 교만의 빌미가 되고 육적 확신의 근거가 된 것을 하나님께서 우리에게서 취하시는 것은 정당하다. 다윗이 백성의 수를 자랑하자 하나님께서는 그 수를 줄이셨다. 히스기야가 자신의 보물을 자랑하며 지나치게 기뻐하자, 그는 어리석은 나그네처럼 강도에게 자기 돈과 금을 보여 주어 스스로 빼앗길 빌미를 준 것이라는 말씀을 듣게 된다.
3. 앞으로 될 일을 볼 수 있었다면, 우리는 현재의 것들에 대한 우리 생각을 부끄러워했을 것이다. 히스기야가 바벨론의 그 왕의 후손들이 결국 자신의 가문과 왕국을 멸망시킬 것임을 알았다면, 그는 그의 사신들에게 그토록 후하게 대하지 않았을 것이다. 선지자가 그리 될 것이라고 말했을 때, 히스기야가 자신이 행한 일을 얼마나 후회했을지 충분히 상상할 수 있다. 우리는 앞으로 일어날 일을 확실히 알 수 없지만, 모든 것이 헛되다는 일반적인 가르침을 받았으므로, 그 헛된 것이라는 이름 아래 놓인 어떤 것에든 만족하고 신뢰를 두는 것은 헛된 일이다.
4. 불경건한 자들과 친분을 맺고 동맹하기를 즐기는 자들은 조만간 그 대가를 충분히 치르게 되고 반드시 후회하게 된다. 히스기야는 음녀의 어머니요 우상숭배의 본산인 바벨론과 우호 관계를 맺는 것이 크게 유익하다고 여겼다. 그러나 한때 예루살렘에 사신을 보내어 환심을 사던 바벨론은 결국 때가 되어 예루살렘을 정복하고 포로로 끌고 갔다. 죄인들과의 동맹, 나아가 죄 자체와의 동맹도 결국 이와 같이 끝난다. 그러므로 그것들로부터 거리를 두는 것이 우리의 지혜이다.
5. 진심으로 죄를 회개하는 자들은 자신의 죄를 지적받는 것을 기꺼이 받아들이고 자신의 허물을 듣고자 할 것이다. 히스기야는 이전에는 알지 못했던 자신의 잘못을 깨닫게 해 주고 죄를 인식하게 해 준 그 여호와의 말씀을 선하다고 여겼다. 참 회개자들의 말은 이러하다. "의인이 나를 치게 하소서. 그것이 은혜입니다." 율법은 영적이기 때문에 선하다. 그 율법 안에서 죄는 죄로 드러나고, 죄는 지극히 죄악된 것으로 나타난다.
6. 참 회개자들은 죄에 대한 말씀의 책망뿐 아니라 섭리의 징계에도 조용히 순복할 것이다. 히스기야가 자신의 죄에 대한 징벌을 선고받았을 때, 그는 "여호와의 말씀이 선하도다"라고 하였다. 단지 형벌이 완화된 것만이 아니라 형벌 선고 자체를 선하다고 한 것이다. 그는 그 공의에 어떤 이의도 제기하지 않고, 오히려 그 경고에 아멘이라 한다. 죄의 악함과 그 죄가 마땅히 받을 것을 아는 자들은 자신에게 임하는 모든 것 가운데서 하나님을 의롭다 하며, 자신의 죄에 비해 벌이 가볍다는 것을 인정할 것이다.
7. 우리는 후손을 무시해서는 안 되지만, 우리 생전에 평화와 진리가 있다면 우리가 마땅히 받을 것보다 더 나은 대우를 받은 것임을 알고 감사해야 한다. 폭풍이 몰려오고 있을 때, 그것이 닥치기 전에 항구에 들어가 평화롭게 무덤에 이르는 것이 은혜이다. 그러나 이것도 결코 보장된 것이 아니므로, 우리는 우리 시대에 닥칠 변화에 대비하여, 하나님의 온전한 뜻 가운데 완전히 서서, 그것이 무엇이든 기꺼이 맞이해야 한다.
