1 “ I made a covenant with my eyes; how then should I look lustfully at a young woman?I made a covenant with mine eyes; How then should I look upon a virgin?내가 내 눈과 언약을 맺었으니, 그러니 내가 어찌 젊은 여인을 음욕으로 바라보겠는가?
2 For what is the portion from God above, and the heritage from the Almighty on high?For what is the portion from God above, And the heritage from the Almighty on high?위에 계신 하나님께서 주시는 몫은 무엇이며, 높은 곳에 계신 전능자에게서 받는 유산은 무엇인가?
3 Is it not calamity to the unrighteous, and disaster to the workers of iniquity?Is it not calamity to the unrighteous, And disaster to the workers of iniquity?불의한 자에게는 재앙이, 죄악을 행하는 자에게는 파멸이 임하지 않겠는가?
4 Doesn’t he see my ways, and count all my steps?Doth not he see my ways, And number all my steps?그분께서 내 길을 보고 계시며 내 걸음을 다 세고 계시지 않은가?
5 “If I have walked with falsehood, and my foot has hurried to deceitIf I have walked with falsehood, And my foot hath hasted to deceit내가 만일 거짓과 함께 걸었거나 내 발이 속임수로 서둘러 달려갔다면,
6 (let me be weighed in an even balance, that God may know my integrity );(Let me be weighed in an even balance, That God may know mine integrity );(하나님께서 내 진실함을 아시도록 나를 공평한 저울에 달아 보시기를 바란다.)
7 if my step has turned out of the way, if my heart walked after my eyes, if any defilement has stuck to my hands,If my step hath turned out of the way, And my heart walked after mine eyes, And if any spot hath cleaved to my hands:내 걸음이 바른길에서 벗어났거나, 내 마음이 내 눈을 따라갔거나, 내 손에 어떤 더러움이 묻었다면,
8 then let me sow, and let another eat. Yes, let the produce of my field be rooted out.Then let me sow, and let another eat; Yea, let the produce of my field be rooted out.내가 씨를 뿌려도 다른 사람이 거두어 먹게 하고, 내 밭의 소출이 뿌리째 뽑히게 하라.
9 “If my heart has been enticed to a woman, and I have laid wait at my neighbor’s door,If my heart hath been enticed unto a woman, And I have laid wait at my neighbor’s door;내 마음이 어떤 여인에게 유혹을 받았거나 내가 이웃의 문 앞에서 숨어 기다렸다면,
10 then let my wife grind for another, and let others sleep with her.Then let my wife grind unto another, And let others bow down upon her.내 아내가 다른 남자를 위해 맷돌을 갈게 하고, 다른 자들이 그녀와 동침하게 하라.
11 For that would be a heinous crime. Yes, it would be an iniquity to be punished by the judges,For that were a heinous crime; Yea, it were an iniquity to be punished by the judges:이는 끔찍한 범죄요, 재판관에게 형벌을 받아야 할 죄악이기 때문이다.
12 for it is a fire that consumes to destruction, and would root out all my increase.For it is a fire that consumeth unto Destruction, And would root out all mine increase.그것은 멸망에 이르도록 태워 버리는 불이어서, 내 모든 소출을 뿌리째 뽑아 버릴 것이다.
13 “If I have despised the cause of my male servant or of my female servant, when they contended with me,If I have despised the cause of my man-servant or of my maid-servant, When they contended with me;내 남종이나 여종이 나와 다툴 때, 내가 그들의 사정을 무시한 적이 있다면,
14 what then will I do when God rises up? When he visits, what will I answer him?What then shall I do when God riseth up? And when he visiteth, what shall I answer him?하나님께서 일어나실 때 나는 무엇을 하겠으며, 그분께서 찾아오실 때 나는 무엇이라 대답하겠는가?
15 Didn’t he who made me in the womb make him? Didn’t one fashion us in the womb?Did not he that made me in the womb make him? And did not one fashion us in the womb?모태에서 나를 지으신 분이 그도 지으시지 않았는가? 한 분께서 태중에서 우리를 빚으시지 않았는가?
16 “If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail,If I have withheld the poor from their desire, Or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail,내가 가난한 자가 바라는 것을 거절했거나 과부의 눈을 쇠하게 했다면,
17 or have eaten my morsel alone, and the fatherless has not eaten of itOr have eaten my morsel alone, And the fatherless hath not eaten thereof내 음식을 혼자 먹고 고아에게 나누어 먹이지 않았다면,
18 (no, from my youth he grew up with me as with a father, I have guided her from my mother’s womb);(Nay, from my youth he grew up with me as with a father, And her have I guided from my mother’s womb);(아니다, 어려서부터 그 고아는 아버지에게서 자라듯 나와 함께 자랐고, 모태에서 나온 때부터 나는 과부를 인도하였다.)
19 if I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or that the needy had no covering;If I have seen any perish for want of clothing, Or that the needy had no covering;입을 옷이 없어 죽어 가는 자나 가릴 것이 없는 궁핍한 자를 내가 보고도,
20 if his heart hasn’t blessed me, if he hasn’t been warmed with my sheep’s fleece;If his loins have not blessed me, And if he hath not been warmed with the fleece of my sheep;그가 내 양털로 따뜻해지지 못해 그의 마음이 나를 축복하지 않았다면,
21 if I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, because I saw my help in the gate;If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, Because I saw my help in the gate:성문에서 나를 도울 자들이 있음을 보고 고아를 향해 내 손을 들어 위협했다면,
22 then let my shoulder fall from the shoulder blade, and my arm be broken from the bone.Then let my shoulder fall from the shoulder-blade, And mine arm be broken from the bone.내 어깨가 어깻죽지에서 떨어지고 내 팔이 뼈마디에서 부러지게 하라.
23 For calamity from God is a terror to me. Because of his majesty, I can do nothing.For calamity from God is a terror to me, And by reason of his majesty I can do nothing.하나님에게서 오는 재앙이 내게 두려움이 되니, 그분의 위엄 앞에서 나는 아무것도 할 수 없기 때문이다.
24 “ If I have made gold my hope, and have said to the fine gold, ‘ You are my confidence;’If I have made gold my hope, And have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence;내가 금을 내 소망으로 삼았거나 순금에게 "너는 내가 의지하는 것이다" 하고 말했다면,
25 If I have rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because my hand had gotten much;If I have rejoiced because my wealth was great, And because my hand had gotten much;내 재산이 많다고, 내 손이 많은 것을 얻었다고 내가 기뻐했다면,
26 if I have seen the sun when it shined, or the moon moving in splendor,If I have beheld the sun when it shined, Or the moon walking in brightness,빛나는 해를 보거나 찬란하게 운행하는 달을 보고서,
27 and my heart has been secretly enticed, and my hand threw a kiss from my mouth;And my heart hath been secretly enticed, And my mouth hath kissed my hand:내 마음이 은밀히 유혹을 받아 내 입에서 손으로 입맞춤을 보냈다면,
28 this also would be an iniquity to be punished by the judges, for I would have denied the God who is above.This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judges; For I should have denied the God that is above.이 또한 재판관에게 형벌을 받아야 할 죄악이니, 위에 계신 하나님을 내가 부인한 것이 되기 때문이다.
29 “ If I have rejoiced at the destruction of him who hated me, or lifted up myself when evil found himIf I have rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me, Or lifted up myself when evil found him나를 미워하는 자가 멸망할 때 내가 기뻐했거나 그에게 재앙이 닥칠 때 내가 우쭐했다면,
30 ( I have certainly not allowed my mouth to sin by asking his life with a curse);(Yea, I have not suffered my mouth to sin By asking his life with a curse);(아니다, 나는 내 입이 그의 생명을 저주로 구하여 죄짓는 것을 허락하지 않았다.)
31 if the men of my tent have not said, ‘ Who can find one who has not been filled with his meat?’If the men of my tent have not said, Who can find one that hath not been filled with his meat?내 장막의 사람들이 "그의 고기로 배불리지 못한 자가 누가 있느냐?" 하고 말하지 않았다면,
32 ( the foreigner has not camped in the street, but I have opened my doors to the traveler);( The sojourner hath not lodged in the street; But I have opened my doors to the traveller);(나그네가 거리에서 밤을 지새우지 않게 나는 길 가는 자에게 내 문을 열어 주었다.)
33 if like Adam I have covered my transgressions, by hiding my iniquity in my heart,If like Adam I have covered my transgressions, By hiding mine iniquity in my bosom,내가 아담처럼 내 허물을 덮어 가리고 내 죄악을 마음속에 숨겼다면,
34 because I feared the great multitude, and the contempt of families terrified me, so that I kept silence, and didn’t go out of the door —Because I feared the great multitude, And the contempt of families terrified me, So that I kept silence, and went not out of the door —큰 무리를 두려워하고 가문들의 멸시가 나를 두렵게 하여, 내가 잠잠히 입을 다물고 문밖으로 나가지 않았다면—
35 oh that I had one to hear me! Behold, here is my signature! Let the Almighty answer me! Let the accuser write my indictment!Oh that I had one to hear me! ( Lo, here is my signature, let the Almighty answer me ) And that I had the indictment which mine adversary hath written!아, 누가 내 말을 들어 주었으면! (보라, 여기 내 서명이 있으니 전능자께서 내게 대답하시기를. 나를 고발하는 자가 내 죄목을 적게 하라.)
36 Surely I would carry it on my shoulder, and I would bind it to me as a crown.Surely I would carry it upon my shoulder; I would bind it unto me as a crown:진실로 나는 그것을 내 어깨에 메고 다니며, 면류관처럼 내 몸에 동여매겠다.
37 I would declare to him the number of my steps. I would go near to him like a prince.I would declare unto him the number of my steps; As a prince would I go near unto him.내가 그분께 내 걸음의 수를 낱낱이 아뢰고, 군주처럼 그분께 나아가겠다.
38 If my land cries out against me, and its furrows weep together;If my land crieth out against me, And the furrows thereof weep together;내 땅이 나를 향해 부르짖거나 그 밭고랑이 함께 울었다면,
39 if I have eaten its fruits without money, or have caused its owners to lose their life,If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, Or have caused the owners thereof to lose their life:내가 값을 치르지 않고 그 소산을 먹었거나 그 주인들의 생명을 잃게 했다면,
40 let briers grow instead of wheat, and stinkweed instead of barley.” The words of Job are ended.Let thistles grow instead of wheat, And cockle instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.밀 대신 찔레가 나고 보리 대신 잡초가 나게 하라. 욥의 말이 끝났다.
