1 “ Surely there is a mine for silver, and a place for gold which they refine.Surely there is a mine for silver, And a place for gold which they refine.참으로 은이 나오는 광맥이 있고, 사람이 정련하는 금이 나오는 곳이 있다.
2 Iron is taken out of the earth, and copper is smelted out of the ore.Iron is taken out of the earth, And copper is molten out of the stone.철은 땅에서 캐어 내고, 구리는 광석을 녹여서 얻는다.
3 Man sets an end to darkness, and searches out, to the furthest bound, the stones of obscurity and of thick darkness.Man setteth an end to darkness, And searcheth out, to the furthest bound, The stones of obscurity and of thick darkness.사람은 어둠에 끝을 정하고, 가장 깊은 곳까지 캄캄하고 어두운 가운데 묻힌 광석을 찾아낸다.
4 He breaks open a shaft away from where people live. They are forgotten by the foot. They hang far from men, they swing back and forth.He breaketh open a shaft away from where men sojourn; They are forgotten of the foot; They hang afar from men, they swing to and fro.사람이 사는 곳에서 멀리 떨어진 곳에 갱도를 뚫는다. 그곳은 지나가는 발길도 잊은 곳이라, 사람들에게서 멀리 떨어진 채 줄에 매달려 이리저리 흔들린다.
5 As for the earth, out of it comes bread. Underneath it is turned up as it were by fire.As for the earth, out of it cometh bread; And underneath it is turned up as it were by fire.땅으로 말하면, 그 위에서는 양식이 나오지만, 그 아래는 불로 뒤집어 놓은 것처럼 뒤집힌다.
6 Sapphires come from its rocks. It has dust of gold.The stones thereof are the place of sapphires, And it hath dust of gold.그 바위에서는 사파이어가 나오고, 그 흙에는 금이 섞여 있다.
7 That path no bird of prey knows, neither has the falcon’s eye seen it.That path no bird of prey knoweth, Neither hath the falcon’s eye seen it:그 길은 어떤 맹금도 알지 못하고, 매의 눈도 본 적이 없다.
8 The proud animals have not trodden it, nor has the fierce lion passed by there.The proud beasts have not trodden it, Nor hath the fierce lion passed thereby.사나운 짐승도 그곳을 밟지 못하였고, 무서운 사자도 그리로 지나간 적이 없다.
9 He puts his hand on the flinty rock, and he overturns the mountains by the roots.He putteth forth his hand upon the flinty rock; He overturneth the mountains by the roots.사람은 단단한 바위에 손을 대고, 산을 뿌리째 뒤엎는다.
10 He cuts out channels among the rocks. His eye sees every precious thing.He cutteth out channels among the rocks; And his eye seeth every precious thing.바위 사이로 갱도를 깎아 내니, 그의 눈이 온갖 귀한 것을 본다.
11 He binds the streams that they don’t trickle. The thing that is hidden he brings out to light.He bindeth the streams that they trickle not; And the thing that is hid bringeth he forth to light.흐르는 물줄기를 막아 새지 못하게 하고, 숨겨진 것을 빛 가운데로 끌어낸다.
12 “But where will wisdom be found? Where is the place of understanding?But where shall wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding?그러나 지혜는 어디에서 찾을 수 있으며, 명철이 있는 곳은 어디인가?
13 Man doesn’t know its price, and it isn’t found in the land of the living.Man knoweth not the price thereof; Neither is it found in the land of the living.사람은 그 값을 알지 못하고, 살아 있는 자들의 땅에서도 그것을 찾을 수 없다.
14 The deep says, ‘ It isn’t in me.’ The sea says, ‘ It isn’t with me.’The deep saith, It is not in me; And the sea saith, It is not with me.깊은 바다가 말하기를 "그것은 내 안에 없다" 하고, 바다가 말하기를 "그것은 내게 없다" 한다.
15 It can’t be gotten for gold, neither will silver be weighed for its price.It cannot be gotten for gold, Neither shall silver be weighed for the price thereof.그것은 순금으로도 살 수 없고, 은을 달아 그 값으로 치를 수도 없다.
16 It can’t be valued with the gold of Ophir, with the precious onyx, or the sapphire.It cannot be valued with the gold of Ophir, With the precious onyx, or the sapphire.오빌의 금으로도 값을 매길 수 없고, 귀한 줄마노나 사파이어로도 값을 매길 수 없다.
17 Gold and glass can’t equal it, neither will it be exchanged for jewels of fine gold.Gold and glass cannot equal it, Neither shall it be exchanged for jewels of fine gold.금이나 유리도 그것과 같을 수 없고, 정금으로 만든 보석으로도 바꿀 수 없다.
18 No mention will be made of coral or of crystal. Yes, the price of wisdom is above rubies.No mention shall be made of coral or of crystal: Yea, the price of wisdom is above rubies.산호나 수정은 말할 것도 없으니, 참으로 지혜의 값은 진주보다 더 귀하다.
19 The topaz of Ethiopia will not equal it. It won’t be valued with pure gold.The topaz of Ethiopia shall not equal it, Neither shall it be valued with pure gold.에티오피아의 황옥도 그것과 같을 수 없고, 순금으로도 값을 매길 수 없다.
20 Where then does wisdom come from? Where is the place of understanding?Whence then cometh wisdom? And where is the place of understanding?그렇다면 지혜는 어디에서 오며, 명철이 있는 곳은 어디인가?
21 Seeing it is hidden from the eyes of all living, and kept close from the birds of the sky.Seeing it is hid from the eyes of all living, And kept close from the birds of the heavens.그것은 모든 산 자의 눈에 숨겨져 있고, 공중의 새들에게도 감추어져 있다.
22 Destruction and Death say, ‘ We have heard a rumor of it with our ears.’Destruction and Death say, We have heard a rumor thereof with our ears.멸망과 죽음이 말하기를 "우리가 그 소문을 귀로 들었을 뿐이다" 한다.
23 “God understands its way, and he knows its place.God understandeth the way thereof, And he knoweth the place thereof.하나님께서 그 길을 깨달으시고, 그것이 있는 곳을 아신다.
24 For he looks to the ends of the earth, and sees under the whole sky.For he looketh to the ends of the earth, And seeth under the whole heaven;이는 그분께서 땅끝까지 살피시고, 온 하늘 아래를 다 보시기 때문이다.
25 He establishes the force of the wind. Yes, he measures out the waters by measure.To make a weight for the wind: Yea, he meteth out the waters by measure.그분께서 바람의 세기를 정하시고, 물을 헤아려 그 분량을 정하셨다.
26 When he made a decree for the rain, and a way for the lightning of the thunder,When he made a decree for the rain, And a way for the lightning of the thunder;비가 내릴 법칙을 정하시고, 천둥 번개가 갈 길을 정하셨을 때,
27 then he saw it, and declared it. He established it, yes, and searched it out.Then did he see it, and declare it; He established it, yea, and searched it out.그때에 그분께서 지혜를 보시고 선포하셨으며, 그것을 굳게 세우시고 깊이 살피셨다.
28 To man he said, ‘ Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom. To depart from evil is understanding.’”And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; And to depart from evil is understanding.그리고 사람에게 말씀하시기를 "보라, 주를 경외하는 것이 곧 지혜요, 악에서 떠나는 것이 명철이다" 하셨다.
