1 After this Job opened his mouth, and cursed the day of his birth.After this opened Job his mouth, and cursed his day.이 일이 있은 뒤에 욥이 입을 열어 자기가 태어난 날을 저주하였다.
2 Job answered:And Job answered and said:욥이 말하였다.
3 “Let the day perish in which I was born, the night which said, ‘ There is a boy conceived.’Let the day perish wherein I was born, And the night which said, There is a man-child conceived.“내가 태어난 그날이 사라져 버려라. 사내아이가 잉태되었다고 말하던 그 밤도 없어져 버려라.
4 Let that day be darkness. Don’t let God from above seek for it, neither let the light shine on it.Let that day be darkness; Let not God from above seek for it, Neither let the light shine upon it.그날이 어둠이 되어 버려라. 위에 계신 하나님이 그날을 찾지 않으시고, 빛도 그 위에 비치지 않게 하여라.
5 Let darkness and the shadow of death claim it for their own. Let a cloud dwell on it. Let all that makes the day black terrify it.Let darkness and the shadow of death claim it for their own; Let a cloud dwell upon it; Let all that maketh black the day terrify it.어둠과 죽음의 그늘이 그날을 차지하게 하고, 구름이 그 위에 덮이게 하며, 낮을 캄캄하게 만드는 모든 것이 그날을 두렵게 하여라.
6 As for that night, let thick darkness seize on it. Let it not rejoice among the days of the year. Let it not come into the number of the months.As for that night, let thick darkness seize upon it: Let it not rejoice among the days of the year; Let it not come into the number of the months.그 밤은 짙은 어둠이 움켜쥐게 하고, 한 해의 날들 가운데서 기뻐하지 못하게 하며, 달수에 들지도 못하게 하여라.
7 Behold, let that night be barren. Let no joyful voice come therein.Lo, let that night be barren; Let no joyful voice come therein.보라, 그 밤은 아이를 낳지 못하게 하고, 그 안에서 기쁜 소리도 들리지 않게 하여라.
8 Let them curse it who curse the day, who are ready to rouse up leviathan.Let them curse it that curse the day, Who are ready to rouse up leviathan.날을 저주하는 자들, 리워야단을 깨워 일으킬 준비가 된 자들이 그날을 저주하게 하여라.
9 Let the stars of its twilight be dark. Let it look for light, but have none, neither let it see the eyelids of the morning,Let the stars of the twilight thereof be dark: Let it look for light, but have none; Neither let it behold the eyelids of the morning:그 새벽의 별들이 어두워지게 하고, 빛을 기다려도 빛이 없게 하며, 동트는 새벽의 눈꺼풀도 보지 못하게 하여라.
10 because it didn’t shut up the doors of my mother’s womb, nor did it hide trouble from my eyes.Because it shut not up the doors of my mother’s womb, Nor hid trouble from mine eyes.이는 그날이 내 어머니의 태의 문을 닫지 않아 내 눈에서 고난을 숨기지 못했기 때문이다.
11 “ Why didn’t I die from the womb? Why didn’t I give up the spirit when my mother bore me?Why died I not from the womb? Why did I not give up the ghost when my mother bare me?“어찌하여 나는 태에서 죽지 않았는가? 어찌하여 어머니가 나를 낳을 때 숨을 거두지 않았는가?
12 Why did the knees receive me? Or why the breast, that I should nurse?Why did the knees receive me? Or why the breasts, that I should suck?어찌하여 무릎이 나를 받았으며, 어찌하여 내가 젖을 빨도록 가슴이 있었는가?
13 For now I should have lain down and been quiet. I should have slept, then I would have been at rest,For now should I have lain down and been quiet; I should have slept; then had I been at rest,그렇지 않았더라면 지금쯤 나는 누워서 잠잠하였을 것이며, 잠들어 쉬고 있었을 것이다.
14 with kings and counselors of the earth, who built up waste places for themselves;With kings and counsellors of the earth, Who built up waste places for themselves;자기를 위하여 폐허가 된 곳을 다시 세운 땅의 왕들과 모사들과 함께,
15 or with princes who had gold, who filled their houses with silver;Or with princes that had gold, Who filled their houses with silver:또는 금을 가지고 집을 은으로 가득 채웠던 통치자들과 함께 말이다.
16 or as a hidden untimely birth I had not been, as infants who never saw light.Or as a hidden untimely birth I had not been, As infants that never saw light.또는 숨겨진 채 달이 차지 못해 떨어진 아이처럼, 빛을 한 번도 보지 못한 갓난아이들처럼 아예 없었더라면 좋았을 것이다.
17 There the wicked cease from troubling. There the weary are at rest.There the wicked cease from troubling; And there the weary are at rest.그곳에서는 악한 자들이 소동을 그치고, 지친 자들이 안식을 누린다.
18 There the prisoners are at ease together. They don’t hear the voice of the taskmaster.There the prisoners are at ease together; They hear not the voice of the taskmaster.그곳에서는 갇힌 자들이 함께 평안히 쉬며, 감독관의 호령 소리를 듣지 않는다.
19 The small and the great are there. The servant is free from his master.The small and the great are there: And the servant is free from his master.작은 자나 큰 자나 거기 있으며, 종은 그 주인에게서 자유롭다.
20 “ Why is light given to him who is in misery, life to the bitter in soul,Wherefore is light given to him that is in misery, And life unto the bitter in soul;“어찌하여 고통받는 자에게 빛을 주시며, 마음이 괴로운 자에게 생명을 주시는가?
21 who long for death, but it doesn’t come; and dig for it more than for hidden treasures,Who long for death, but it cometh not, And dig for it more than for hid treasures;그들은 죽기를 기다려도 죽음이 오지 않고, 감추어진 보물을 찾기보다 더 죽음을 파헤쳐 찾는다.
22 who rejoice exceedingly, and are glad, when they can find the grave?Who rejoice exceedingly, And are glad, when they can find the grave?그들은 무덤을 찾을 수 있을 때 지극히 기뻐하고 즐거워한다.
23 Why is light given to a man whose way is hidden, whom God has hedged in?Why is light given to a man whose way is hid, And whom God hath hedged in?어찌하여 앞길이 막힌 사람, 하나님이 사방을 울타리로 둘러싸신 사람에게 빛을 주시는가?
24 For my sighing comes before I eat. My groanings are poured out like water.For my sighing cometh before I eat, And my groanings are poured out like water.나는 음식을 먹기 전에 탄식이 먼저 나오고, 나의 신음은 물처럼 쏟아진다.
25 For the thing which I fear comes on me, that which I am afraid of comes to me.For the thing which I fear cometh upon me, And that which I am afraid of cometh unto me.내가 두려워하던 그 일이 내게 닥쳤고, 내가 무서워하던 그것이 내게 임하였다.
26 I am not at ease, neither am I quiet, neither do I have rest; but trouble comes.”I am not at ease, neither am I quiet, neither have I rest; But trouble cometh.나는 편안하지도 못하고, 잠잠하지도 못하며, 쉬지도 못하니, 오직 환난만 닥쳐올 뿐이다.”
