1 Israel stayed in Shittim; and the people began to play the prostitute with the daughters of Moab;And Israel abode in Shittim; and the people began to play the harlot with the daughters of Moab:이스라엘이 싯딤에 머물러 있을 때에 백성이 모압 여자들과 음행하기 시작하였다.
2 for they called the people to the sacrifices of their gods. The people ate and bowed down to their gods.for they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods; and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods.그 여자들이 백성을 자기 신들에게 드리는 제사에 불러들이니, 백성이 그 제물을 먹고 그들의 신들에게 절하였다.
3 Israel joined himself to Baal Peor, and Yahweh’s anger burned against Israel.And Israel joined himself unto Baal-peor: and the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel.이렇게 이스라엘이 바알브올과 한 몸이 되니, 여호와께서 이스라엘을 향하여 진노하셨다.
4 Yahweh said to Moses, “ Take all the chiefs of the people, and hang them up to Yahweh before the sun, that the fierce anger of Yahweh may turn away from Israel.”And Jehovah said unto Moses, Take all the chiefs of the people, and hang them up unto Jehovah before the sun, that the fierce anger of Jehovah may turn away from Israel.여호와께서 모세에게 말씀하셨다. "백성의 모든 우두머리를 잡아다가 여호와 앞에서 해를 향하여 매달아라. 그리하면 여호와의 맹렬한 진노가 이스라엘에게서 떠나리라."
5 Moses said to the judges of Israel, “Everyone kill his men who have joined themselves to Baal Peor.”And Moses said unto the judges of Israel, Slay ye every one his men that have joined themselves unto Baal-peor.그래서 모세가 이스라엘의 재판관들에게 말하였다. "여러분은 각자 자기에게 속한 사람들 가운데 바알브올과 한 몸이 된 자들을 죽이시오."
6 Behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought to his brothers a Midianite woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, while they were weeping at the door of the Tent of Meeting.And, behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought unto his brethren a Midianitish woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, while they were weeping at the door of the tent of meeting.그런데 보라, 이스라엘 자손 중 한 사람이 모세의 눈앞에서, 또 회막 문에서 울고 있던 온 이스라엘 자손 회중의 눈앞에서, 한 미디안 여자를 자기 형제들에게로 데려왔다.
7 When Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from the middle of the congregation, and took a spear in his hand.And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from the midst of the congregation, and took a spear in his hand;제사장 아론의 손자요 엘르아살의 아들인 비느하스가 이것을 보고, 회중 가운데서 일어나 손에 창을 잡고,
8 He went after the man of Israel into the pavilion, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her body. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.그 이스라엘 사람을 따라 장막 안으로 들어가, 그 이스라엘 남자와 여자를 둘 다 몸을 꿰뚫어 찔렀다. 그러자 이스라엘 자손에게 내리던 재앙이 그쳤다.
9 Those who died by the plague were twenty-four thousand.And those that died by the plague were twenty and four thousand.그 재앙으로 죽은 사람은 이만 사천 명이었다.
10 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying,여호와께서 모세에게 말씀하셨다.
11 “ Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, in that he was jealous with my jealousy among them, so that I didn’t consume the children of Israel in my jealousy.Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, in that he was jealous with my jealousy among them, so that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy."제사장 아론의 손자요 엘르아살의 아들인 비느하스가, 내 질투심을 품고 그들 가운데서 열심을 냄으로 내 진노를 이스라엘 자손에게서 돌이켰다. 그래서 내가 내 질투로 이스라엘 자손을 진멸하지 않았다.
12 Therefore say, ‘ Behold, I give to him my covenant of peace.Wherefore say, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace:그러므로 너는 말하여라. '보라, 내가 그에게 평화의 언약을 준다.
13 It shall be to him, and to his offspring after him, the covenant of an everlasting priesthood, because he was jealous for his God, and made atonement for the children of Israel.’”and it shall be unto him, and to his seed after him, the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was jealous for his God, and made atonement for the children of Israel.이 언약은 그와 그의 뒤를 이을 자손에게 영원한 제사장직의 언약이 되리니, 이는 그가 자기 하나님을 위하여 열심을 내어 이스라엘 자손을 위해 속죄하였기 때문이다.'"

15 The name of the Midianite woman who was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur. He was head of the people of a fathers’ house in Midian.And the name of the Midianitish woman that was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was head of the people of a fathers’ house in Midian.죽임을 당한 미디안 여자의 이름은 고스비이니, 수르의 딸이었다. 수르는 미디안에서 한 조상의 가문의 백성의 우두머리였다.
16 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying,여호와께서 모세에게 말씀하셨다.
17 “ Harass the Midianites, and strike them;Vex the Midianites, and smite them;"미디안 사람들을 괴롭게 하고 그들을 쳐라.
18 for they harassed you with their wiles, wherein they have deceived you in the matter of Peor, and in the incident regarding Cozbi, the daughter of the prince of Midian, their sister, who was slain on the day of the plague in the matter of Peor.”for they vex you with their wiles, wherewith they have beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of the prince of Midian, their sister, who was slain on the day of the plague in the matter of Peor.이는 그들이 브올의 일과, 또 브올의 재앙이 있던 날에 죽임을 당한 미디안 지도자의 딸이요 그들의 자매인 고스비의 일로, 간계를 써서 너희를 괴롭게 하고 속였기 때문이다."
