1 Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had come to Shechem to make him king.And Rehoboam went to Shechem; for all Israel were come to Shechem to make him king.르호보암이 세겜으로 갔다. 온 이스라엘이 그를 왕으로 세우려고 세겜에 모였기 때문이다.
2 When Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard of it ( for he was in Egypt, where he had fled from the presence of King Solomon ), Jeroboam returned out of Egypt.And it came to pass, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard of it ( for he was in Egypt, whither he had fled from the presence of king Solomon ), that Jeroboam returned out of Egypt.느밧의 아들 여로보암이 이 소식을 들었는데, 그는 솔로몬 왕을 피해 이집트로 달아나 그곳에 있었다. 그러던 여로보암이 이집트에서 돌아왔다.
3 They sent and called him; and Jeroboam and all Israel came, and they spoke to Rehoboam, saying,And they sent and called him; and Jeroboam and all Israel came, and they spake to Rehoboam, saying,사람들이 사람을 보내어 그를 불렀고, 여로보암과 온 이스라엘이 와서 르호보암에게 말했다.
4 “ Your father made our yoke grievous. Now therefore make the grievous service of your father and his heavy yoke which he put on us, lighter, and we will serve you.”Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make thou the grievous service of thy father, and his heavy yoke which he put upon us, lighter, and we will serve thee."당신의 아버지께서 우리에게 무거운 멍에를 지우셨습니다. 그러니 이제 당신의 아버지께서 시키신 고된 일과 우리에게 지우신 무거운 멍에를 가볍게 해 주십시오. 그러면 우리가 당신을 섬기겠습니다."
5 He said to them, “ Come again to me after three days.” So the people departed.And he said unto them, Come again unto me after three days. And the people departed.르호보암이 그들에게 말했다. "사흘 뒤에 다시 내게 오시오." 그러자 백성은 물러갔다.
6 King Rehoboam took counsel with the old men, who had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, saying, “ What counsel do you give me about how to answer these people?”And king Rehoboam took counsel with the old men, that had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, saying, What counsel give ye me to return answer to this people?르호보암 왕은 자기 아버지 솔로몬이 살아 있을 때 그 앞에서 섬기던 노인들과 의논하며 말했다. "이 백성에게 어떻게 대답하면 좋겠소? 무슨 조언을 주겠소?"
7 They spoke to him, saying, “ If you are kind to these people, please them, and speak good words to them, then they will be your servants forever.”And they spake unto him, saying, If thou be kind to this people, and please them, and speak good words to them, then they will be thy servants for ever.그들이 그에게 말했다. "만일 임금님께서 이 백성에게 친절히 대하시고 그들을 기쁘게 하시며 좋은 말로 말씀하시면, 그들이 영원히 임금님의 종이 될 것입니다."
8 But he abandoned the counsel of the old men which they had given him, and took counsel with the young men who had grown up with him, who stood before him.But he forsook the counsel of the old men which they had given him, and took counsel with the young men that were grown up with him, that stood before him.그러나 르호보암은 노인들이 준 조언을 저버리고, 자기와 함께 자라나 자기 앞에 서 있는 젊은이들과 의논했다.
9 He said to them, “ What counsel do you give, that we may give an answer to these people, who have spoken to me, saying, ‘ Make the yoke that your father put on us lighter’?”And he said unto them, What counsel give ye, that we may return answer to this people, who have spoken to me, saying, Make the yoke that thy father did put upon us lighter?그가 그들에게 말했다. "이 백성에게 대답할 말을 어떻게 하면 좋겠소? 그들이 내게 '당신의 아버지께서 우리에게 지우신 멍에를 가볍게 해 달라'고 말하는데, 무슨 조언을 주겠소?"
10 The young men who had grown up with him spoke to him, saying, “ Thus you shall tell the people who spoke to you, saying, ‘ Your father made our yoke heavy, but make it lighter on us;’ thus you shall say to them, ‘ My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist.And the young men that were grown up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou say unto the people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it lighter unto us; thus shalt thou say unto them, My little finger is thicker than my father’s loins.그와 함께 자라난 젊은이들이 그에게 말했다. "임금님께 '당신의 아버지께서 우리 멍에를 무겁게 하셨으니 가볍게 해 달라'고 말한 그 백성에게 이렇게 말씀하십시오. '나의 새끼손가락이 내 아버지의 허리보다 굵다.
11 Now whereas my father burdened you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke. My father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.’”And now whereas my father did lade you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke: my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.내 아버지께서 너희에게 무거운 멍에를 지우셨다면, 나는 거기에 더 보탤 것이다. 내 아버지께서는 너희를 채찍으로 다스리셨지만, 나는 너희를 전갈 채찍으로 다스리겠다'고 하십시오."
12 So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king asked, saying, “ Come to me again the third day.”So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king bade, saying, Come to me again the third day.여로보암과 모든 백성이 사흘째 되는 날에 르호보암에게 왔다. "사흘째 되는 날 다시 내게 오라"고 왕이 말했기 때문이다.
13 The king answered them roughly; and King Rehoboam abandoned the counsel of the old men,And the king answered them roughly; and king Rehoboam forsook the counsel of the old men,왕이 그들에게 거칠게 대답했다. 르호보암 왕은 노인들의 조언을 저버리고,
14 and spoke to them after the counsel of the young men, saying, “ My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to it. My father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.”and spake to them after the counsel of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add thereto: my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.젊은이들의 조언을 따라 그들에게 말했다. "내 아버지께서 너희 멍에를 무겁게 하셨지만, 나는 거기에 더 보탤 것이다. 내 아버지께서는 너희를 채찍으로 다스리셨지만, 나는 너희를 전갈 채찍으로 다스리겠다."
15 So the king didn’t listen to the people; for it was brought about by God, that Yahweh might establish his word, which he spoke by Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.So the king hearkened not unto the people; for it was brought about of God, that Jehovah might establish his word, which he spake by Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.이렇게 왕이 백성의 말을 듣지 않았으니, 이는 하나님께서 그렇게 되게 하신 일이었다. 여호와께서 실로 사람 아히야를 통해 느밧의 아들 여로보암에게 하신 그 말씀을 이루려 하신 것이다.
16 When all Israel saw that the king didn’t listen to them, the people answered the king, saying, “ What portion do we have in David? We don’t have an inheritance in the son of Jesse! Every man to your tents, Israel! Now see to your own house, David.” So all Israel departed to their tents.And when all Israel saw that the king hearkened not unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: every man to your tents, O Israel: now see to thine own house, David. So all Israel departed unto their tents.온 이스라엘은 왕이 자기들의 말을 듣지 않는 것을 보고 왕에게 대답했다. "우리가 다윗에게서 받을 몫이 무엇이냐? 우리가 이새의 아들에게서 받을 유산도 없다! 이스라엘아, 각자 자기 장막으로 돌아가라! 다윗아, 이제 네 집안이나 돌보아라." 그리하여 온 이스라엘은 자기 장막으로 돌아갔다.
17 But as for the children of Israel who lived in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.But as for the children of Israel that dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.그러나 유다의 성읍들에 사는 이스라엘 자손에 대해서는 르호보암이 그들을 다스렸다.
18 Then King Rehoboam sent Hadoram, who was over the men subject to forced labor; and the children of Israel stoned him to death with stones. King Rehoboam hurried to get himself up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.Then king Rehoboam sent Hadoram, who was over the men subject to taskwork; and the children of Israel stoned him to death with stones. And king Rehoboam made speed to get him up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.그때 르호보암 왕이 강제 노역을 감독하는 하도람을 보냈더니, 이스라엘 자손이 돌로 그를 쳐 죽였다. 르호보암 왕은 서둘러 자기 병거에 올라타 예루살렘으로 달아났다.
19 So Israel rebelled against David’s house to this day.So Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day.이렇게 이스라엘은 오늘날까지 다윗의 집안에 맞서 반역하게 되었다.
