1 Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem to his mother’s brothers, and spoke with them and with all the family of the house of his mother’s father, saying,And Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem unto his mother’s brethren, and spake with them, and with all the family of the house of his mother’s father, saying,여룹바알의 아들 아비멜렉이 세겜에 있는 자기 외삼촌들에게 가서, 그들과 외할아버지 집안의 온 가족에게 이렇게 말하였다.
2 “ Please speak in the ears of all the men of Shechem, ‘ Is it better for you that all the sons of Jerubbaal, who are seventy persons, rule over you, or that one rule over you?’ Remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.”Speak, I pray you, in the ears of all the men of Shechem, Whether is better for you, that all the sons of Jerubbaal, who are threescore and ten persons, rule over you, or that one rule over you? remember also that I am your bone and your flesh."세겜의 모든 사람들이 듣도록 이렇게 물어 주십시오. 3 His mother’s brothers spoke of him in the ears of all the men of Shechem all these words. 7 When they told it to Jotham, he went and stood on the top of Mount Gerizim and lifted up his voice, cried out, and said to them, “ Listen to me, you men of Shechem, that God may listen to you.And when they told it to Jotham, he went and stood on the top of mount Gerizim, and lifted up his voice, and cried, and said unto them, Hearken unto me, ye men of Shechem, that God may hearken unto you.사람들이 이 일을 요담에게 알리니, 그가 가서 그리심 산 꼭대기에 서서 큰 소리로 외쳐 말하였다. 8 The trees set out to anoint a king over themselves. They said to the olive tree, ‘ Reign over us.’The trees went forth on a time to anoint a king over them; and they said unto the olive-tree, Reign thou over us.한번은 나무들이 자기들을 다스릴 왕에게 기름을 부으려고 나섰소. 그들이 올리브나무에게 '우리를 다스려 주시오' 하고 말하였소.
9 “ But the olive tree said to them, ‘ Should I stop producing my oil, with which they honor God and man by me, and go to wave back and forth over the trees?’But the olive-tree said unto them, Should I leave my fatness, wherewith by me they honor God and man, and go to wave to and fro over the trees?그러나 올리브나무가 그들에게 대답하였소. '사람들이 나의 기름으로 하나님과 사람을 영화롭게 하는데, 내가 어찌 그 기름을 버리고 나무들 위에서 흔들거리러 가겠소?'
10 “ The trees said to the fig tree, ‘ Come and reign over us.’And the trees said to the fig-tree, Come thou, and reign over us.그러자 나무들이 무화과나무에게 말하였소. '와서 우리를 다스려 주시오.'
11 “ But the fig tree said to them, ‘ Should I leave my sweetness, and my good fruit, and go to wave back and forth over the trees?’But the fig-tree said unto them, Should I leave my sweetness, and my good fruit, and go to wave to and fro over the trees?그러나 무화과나무가 그들에게 대답하였소. '내가 어찌 나의 단맛과 좋은 열매를 버리고 나무들 위에서 흔들거리러 가겠소?'
12 “ The trees said to the vine, ‘ Come and reign over us.’And the trees said unto the vine, Come thou, and reign over us.그러자 나무들이 포도나무에게 말하였소. '와서 우리를 다스려 주시오.'
13 “ The vine said to them, ‘ Should I leave my new wine, which cheers God and man, and go to wave back and forth over the trees?’And the vine said unto them, Should I leave my new wine, which cheereth God and man, and go to wave to and fro over the trees?그러나 포도나무가 그들에게 대답하였소. '하나님과 사람을 기쁘게 하는 나의 새 포도주를 내가 어찌 버리고 나무들 위에서 흔들거리러 가겠소?'
14 “ Then all the trees said to the bramble, ‘ Come and reign over us.’Then said all the trees unto the bramble, Come thou, and reign over us.그러자 모든 나무가 가시나무에게 말하였소. '와서 우리를 다스려 주시오.'
15 “ The bramble said to the trees, ‘If in truth you anoint me king over you, then come and take refuge in my shade; and if not, let fire come out of the bramble, and devour the cedars of Lebanon.’And the bramble said unto the trees, If in truth ye anoint me king over you, then come and take refuge in my shade; and if not, let fire come out of the bramble, and devour the cedars of Lebanon.가시나무가 나무들에게 대답하였소. '너희가 진실로 나에게 기름을 부어 너희 왕으로 삼겠다면, 와서 내 그늘에 피하라. 그렇게 하지 않으면, 가시나무에서 불이 나와 레바논의 백향목을 살라 버릴 것이다.'
16 “ Now therefore, if you have dealt truly and righteously, in that you have made Abimelech king, and if you have dealt well with Jerubbaal and his house, and have done to him according to the deserving of his handsNow therefore, if ye have dealt truly and uprightly, in that ye have made Abimelech king, and if ye have dealt well with Jerubbaal and his house, and have done unto him according to the deserving of his hands이제 여러분이 아비멜렉을 왕으로 삼은 일을 진실하고 의롭게 행한 것이라면, 또 여룹바알과 그 집안을 선하게 대접하고 그 손이 행한 공로에 합당하게 그를 대접한 것이라면 —
17 ( for my father fought for you, risked his life, and delivered you out of the hand of Midian;( for my father fought for you, and adventured his life, and delivered you out of the hand of Midian:(나의 아버지는 여러분을 위하여 싸웠고 자기 목숨을 걸어 여러분을 미디안의 손에서 건져 냈소.
18 and you have risen up against my father’s house today and have slain his sons, seventy persons, on one stone, and have made Abimelech, the son of his female servant, king over the men of Shechem, because he is your brother);and ye are risen up against my father’s house this day, and have slain his sons, threescore and ten persons, upon one stone, and have made Abimelech, the son of his maid-servant, king over the men of Shechem, because he is your brother);그런데 여러분은 오늘 나의 아버지의 집안을 쳐서 일어나, 그의 아들 일흔 명을 한 바위 위에서 죽이고, 그의 여종의 아들인 아비멜렉을 세겜 사람들의 왕으로 삼았소. 그가 여러분의 형제라는 이유로 말이오.)
19 if you then have dealt truly and righteously with Jerubbaal and with his house today, then rejoice in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you;if ye then have dealt truly and uprightly with Jerubbaal and with his house this day, then rejoice ye in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you:만일 여러분이 오늘 여룹바알과 그 집안을 진실하고 의롭게 대한 것이라면, 아비멜렉으로 인하여 기뻐하고, 아비멜렉도 여러분으로 인하여 기뻐하기를 바라오.
20 but if not, let fire come out from Abimelech and devour the men of Shechem and the house of Millo; and let fire come out from the men of Shechem and from the house of Millo and devour Abimelech.”but if not, let fire come out from Abimelech, and devour the men of Shechem, and the house of Millo; and let fire come out from the men of Shechem, and from the house of Millo, and devour Abimelech.그러나 그렇지 않다면, 아비멜렉에게서 불이 나와 세겜 사람들과 밀로의 집안을 살라 버리고, 또 세겜 사람들과 밀로의 집안에서 불이 나와 아비멜렉을 살라 버리기를 바라오."
21 Jotham ran away and fled, and went to Beer and lived there, for fear of Abimelech his brother.And Jotham ran away, and fled, and went to Beer, and dwelt there, for fear of Abimelech his brother.그러고 나서 요담은 자기 형 아비멜렉이 두려워 달아나 도망하여 브엘로 가서 거기에 머물러 살았다.
22 Abimelech was prince over Israel three years.And Abimelech was prince over Israel three years.아비멜렉이 이스라엘을 삼 년 동안 다스렸다.
23 Then God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech,And God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech:하나님께서 아비멜렉과 세겜 사람들 사이에 악한 영을 보내시니, 세겜 사람들이 아비멜렉을 배신하였다.
24 that the violence done to the seventy sons of Jerubbaal might come, and that their blood might be laid on Abimelech their brother who killed them, and on the men of Shechem who strengthened his hands to kill his brothers.that the violence done to the threescore and ten sons of Jerubbaal might come, and that their blood might be laid upon Abimelech their brother, who slew them, and upon the men of Shechem, who strengthened his hands to slay his brethren.이는 여룹바알의 아들 일흔 명에게 저지른 폭력에 대한 보응이 임하게 하시고, 그들의 피가 그들을 죽인 형제 아비멜렉과 그 형제들을 죽이도록 그의 손을 도운 세겜 사람들에게 돌아가게 하시려는 것이었다.
25 The men of Shechem set an ambush for him on the tops of the mountains, and they robbed all who came along that way by them; and Abimelech was told about it.And the men of Shechem set liers-in-wait for him on the tops of the mountains, and they robbed all that came along that way by them: and it was told Abimelech.세겜 사람들이 산꼭대기에 사람을 두어 아비멜렉을 노리게 하니, 그들이 그 길로 지나가는 사람들을 모조리 털었다. 그리고 이 일이 아비멜렉에게 알려졌다.
26 Gaal the son of Ebed came with his brothers and went over to Shechem; and the men of Shechem put their trust in him.And Gaal the son of Ebed came with his brethren, and went over to Shechem; and the men of Shechem put their trust in him.에벳의 아들 가알이 자기 형제들과 함께 와서 세겜으로 건너가니, 세겜 사람들이 그를 신뢰하였다.
27 They went out into the field, harvested their vineyards, trod the grapes, celebrated, and went into the house of their god and ate and drank, and cursed Abimelech.And they went out into the field, and gathered their vineyards, and trod the grapes, and held festival, and went into the house of their god, and did eat and drink, and cursed Abimelech.그들이 들로 나가 포도원에서 포도를 거두어 밟아 짜고, 잔치를 벌이며 자기들의 신전에 들어가서 먹고 마시며 아비멜렉을 저주하였다.
28 Gaal the son of Ebed said, “ Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? Isn’t he the son of Jerubbaal? Isn’t Zebul his officer? Serve the men of Hamor the father of Shechem, but why should we serve him?And Gaal the son of Ebed said, Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? is not he the son of Jerubbaal? and Zebul his officer? serve ye the men of Hamor the father of Shechem: but why should we serve him?에벳의 아들 가알이 말하였다. "아비멜렉이 누구이며 세겜이 누구이기에 우리가 그를 섬겨야 한단 말인가? 그가 여룹바알의 아들이 아닌가? 그의 신하 스불은 또 누구인가? 차라리 세겜의 조상 하몰의 사람들을 섬겨라. 어찌하여 우리가 아비멜렉을 섬겨야 한단 말인가?
29 I wish that this people were under my hand! Then I would remove Abimelech.” He said to Abimelech, “ Increase your army and come out!”And would that this people were under my hand! then would I remove Abimelech. And he said to Abimelech, Increase thine army, and come out.이 백성이 내 손아래 있다면 좋으련만! 그러면 내가 아비멜렉을 없애 버릴 텐데." 그리고 그는 아비멜렉에게 "네 군대를 늘려서 나오라!" 하고 말하였다.
30 When Zebul the ruler of the city heard the words of Gaal the son of Ebed, his anger burned.And when Zebul the ruler of the city heard the words of Gaal the son of Ebed, his anger was kindled.성읍의 지도자 스불이 에벳의 아들 가알의 말을 듣고 분노가 치밀었다.
31 He sent messengers to Abimelech craftily, saying, “ Behold, Gaal the son of Ebed and his brothers have come to Shechem; and behold, they incite the city against you.And he sent messengers unto Abimelech craftily, saying, Behold, Gaal the son of Ebed and his brethren are come to Shechem; and, behold, they constrain the city to take part against thee.그는 아비멜렉에게 은밀히 사자를 보내어 말하였다. "보십시오, 에벳의 아들 가알과 그의 형제들이 세겜에 와서 성읍을 부추겨 당신을 대적하게 하고 있습니다.
32 Now therefore, go up by night, you and the people who are with you, and lie in wait in the field.Now therefore, up by night, thou and the people that are with thee, and lie in wait in the field:그러니 이제 당신과 당신을 따르는 백성은 밤에 일어나 들에 매복하십시오.
33 It shall be that in the morning, as soon as the sun is up, you shall rise early and rush on the city. Behold, when he and the people who are with him come out against you, then may you do to them as you shall find occasion.”and it shall be, that in the morning, as soon as the sun is up, thou shalt rise early, and rush upon the city; and, behold, when he and the people that are with him come out against thee, then mayest thou do to them as thou shalt find occasion.그리고 아침 해가 떠오르거든 일찍 일어나 성읍을 급습하십시오. 보십시오, 가알과 그를 따르는 백성이 당신을 대적하여 나오거든, 형편을 보아 그들에게 행하십시오."
34 Abimelech rose up, and all the people who were with him, by night, and they laid wait against Shechem in four companies.And Abimelech rose up, and all the people that were with him, by night, and they laid wait against Shechem in four companies.아비멜렉과 그를 따르는 모든 백성이 밤에 일어나 네 부대로 나누어 세겜을 노리고 매복하였다.
35 Gaal the son of Ebed went out, and stood in the entrance of the gate of the city. Abimelech rose up, and the people who were with him, from the ambush.And Gaal the son of Ebed went out, and stood in the entrance of the gate of the city: and Abimelech rose up, and the people that were with him, from the ambushment.에벳의 아들 가알이 나가서 성읍 성문 어귀에 서니, 아비멜렉과 그를 따르는 백성이 매복한 곳에서 일어났다.
36 When Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, “ Behold, people are coming down from the tops of the mountains.” Zebul said to him, “ You see the shadows of the mountains as if they were men.”And when Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, Behold, there come people down from the tops of the mountains. And Zebul said unto him, Thou seest the shadow of the mountains as if they were men.가알이 그 백성을 보고 스불에게 말하였다. "보시오, 산꼭대기에서 사람들이 내려오고 있소." 스불이 그에게 말하였다. "당신은 산 그림자를 사람으로 잘못 보고 있는 것이오."
37 Gaal spoke again and said, “ Behold, people are coming down by the middle of the land, and one company comes by the way of the oak of Meonenim.”And Gaal spake again and said, See, there come people down by the middle of the land, and one company cometh by the way of the oak of Meonenim.가알이 다시 말하였다. "보시오, 사람들이 땅 한가운데로 내려오고 있고, 한 부대는 점쟁이 상수리나무 길로 오고 있소."
38 Then Zebul said to him, “ Now where is your mouth, that you said, ‘ Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him?’ Isn’t this the people that you have despised? Please go out now and fight with them.”Then said Zebul unto him, Where is now thy mouth, that thou saidst, Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him? is not this the people that thou hast despised? go out now, I pray, and fight with them.그러자 스불이 그에게 말하였다. "'아비멜렉이 누구이기에 우리가 그를 섬겨야 한단 말인가?' 하고 큰소리치던 당신의 입은 이제 어디 있소? 이들이 바로 당신이 멸시하던 그 백성이 아니오? 이제 나가서 그들과 싸워 보시오."
39 Gaal went out before the men of Shechem, and fought with Abimelech.And Gaal went out before the men of Shechem, and fought with Abimelech.가알이 세겜 사람들 앞에서 나가 아비멜렉과 싸웠다.
40 Abimelech chased him, and he fled before him, and many fell wounded, even to the entrance of the gate.And Abimelech chased him, and he fled before him, and there fell many wounded, even unto the entrance of the gate.아비멜렉이 그를 추격하니, 그가 그 앞에서 도망하였고, 성문 어귀까지 많은 사람이 부상하여 쓰러졌다.
41 Abimelech lived at Arumah; and Zebul drove out Gaal and his brothers, that they should not dwell in Shechem.And Abimelech dwelt at Arumah: and Zebul drove out Gaal and his brethren, that they should not dwell in Shechem.아비멜렉은 아루마에 머물렀고, 스불은 가알과 그의 형제들을 쫓아내어 세겜에 살지 못하게 하였다.
42 On the next day, the people went out into the field; and they told Abimelech.And it came to pass on the morrow, that the people went out into the field; and they told Abimelech.이튿날 백성이 들로 나갔는데, 사람들이 이 일을 아비멜렉에게 알렸다.
43 He took the people and divided them into three companies, and laid wait in the field; and he looked, and behold, the people came out of the city. So, he rose up against them and struck them.And he took the people, and divided them into three companies, and laid wait in the field; and he looked, and, behold, the people came forth out of the city; and he rose up against them, and smote them.그가 백성을 데리고 세 부대로 나누어 들에 매복하였다. 그가 보니, 백성이 성읍에서 나오고 있었다. 그가 일어나 그들을 쳤다.
44 Abimelech and the companies that were with him rushed forward and stood in the entrance of the gate of the city; and the two companies rushed on all who were in the field and struck them.And Abimelech, and the companies that were with him, rushed forward, and stood in the entrance of the gate of the city: and the two companies rushed upon all that were in the field, and smote them.아비멜렉과 그와 함께한 부대가 돌진하여 성읍 성문 어귀에 섰고, 나머지 두 부대는 들에 있던 모든 사람에게 달려들어 그들을 쳤다.
45 Abimelech fought against the city all that day; and he took the city and killed the people in it. He beat down the city and sowed it with salt.And Abimelech fought against the city all that day; and he took the city, and slew the people that were therein: and he beat down the city, and sowed it with salt.아비멜렉이 그날 종일 그 성읍을 공격하여 성읍을 점령하고, 그 안에 있던 사람들을 죽였다. 그리고 그 성읍을 헐고 그 위에 소금을 뿌렸다.
46 When all the men of the tower of Shechem heard of it, they entered into the stronghold of the house of Elberith.And when all the men of the tower of Shechem heard thereof, they entered into the stronghold of the house of Elberith.세겜 망대의 모든 사람이 이 일을 듣고 엘브릿 신전의 요새로 들어갔다.
47 Abimelech was told that all the men of the tower of Shechem were gathered together.And it was told Abimelech that all the men of the tower of Shechem were gathered together.세겜 망대의 모든 사람이 함께 모였다는 것이 아비멜렉에게 알려졌다.
48 Abimelech went up to Mount Zalmon, he and all the people who were with him; and Abimelech took an ax in his hand, and cut down a bough from the trees, and took it up, and laid it on his shoulder. Then he said to the people who were with him, “ What you have seen me do, make haste, and do as I have done!”And Abimelech gat him up to mount Zalmon, he and all the people that were with him; and Abimelech took an axe in his hand, and cut down a bough from the trees, and took it up, and laid it on his shoulder: and he said unto the people that were with him, What ye have seen me do, make haste, and do as I have done.아비멜렉이 자기와 함께한 모든 백성을 데리고 살몬 산으로 올라가, 손에 도끼를 들고 나뭇가지 하나를 찍어 메고는, 함께한 백성에게 말하였다. 49 All the people likewise each cut down his bough, followed Abimelech, and put them at the base of the stronghold, and set the stronghold on fire over them, so that all the people of the tower of Shechem died also, about a thousand men and women.And all the people likewise cut down every man his bough, and followed Abimelech, and put them to the stronghold, and set the stronghold on fire upon them; so that all the men of the tower of Shechem died also, about a thousand men and women.모든 백성도 각자 나뭇가지를 찍어 아비멜렉을 따라가, 그것들을 요새 밑에 쌓고 그 요새에 불을 질렀다. 그리하여 세겜 망대의 모든 사람, 곧 남녀 약 천 명이 죽었다.
50 Then Abimelech went to Thebez and encamped against Thebez, and took it.Then went Abimelech to Thebez, and encamped against Thebez, and took it.그 후 아비멜렉이 데베스로 가서 데베스를 향하여 진을 치고 그곳을 점령하였다.

52 Abimelech came to the tower and fought against it, and came near to the door of the tower to burn it with fire.And Abimelech came unto the tower, and fought against it, and drew near unto the door of the tower to burn it with fire.아비멜렉이 그 망대에 이르러 그것을 공격하고, 불을 지르려고 망대 문 가까이로 다가갔다.
53 A certain woman cast an upper millstone on Abimelech’s head, and broke his skull.And a certain woman cast an upper millstone upon Abimelech’s head, and brake his skull.그때 한 여인이 맷돌 위짝을 아비멜렉의 머리에 던지니, 그의 두개골이 깨졌다.
54 Then he called hastily to the young man, his armor bearer, and said to him, “ Draw your sword and kill me, that men not say of me, ‘ A woman killed him.’ His young man thrust him through, and he died.”Then he called hastily unto the young man his armorbearer, and said unto him, Draw thy sword, and kill me, that men say not of me, A woman slew him. And his young man thrust him through, and he died.그가 급히 자기 무기를 든 젊은이를 불러 말하였다. "네 칼을 빼어 나를 죽여라. 사람들이 나를 두고 '여인이 그를 죽였다' 하지 못하게 하여라." 그 젊은이가 그를 찔러 관통하니, 그가 죽었다.
55 When the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, they each departed to his place.And when the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, they departed every man unto his place.이스라엘 사람들은 아비멜렉이 죽은 것을 보고, 각자 자기 처소로 돌아갔다.
56 Thus God repaid the wickedness of Abimelech, which he did to his father in killing his seventy brothers;Thus God requited the wickedness of Abimelech, which he did unto his father, in slaying his seventy brethren;이렇게 하나님께서는 아비멜렉이 자기 형제 일흔 명을 죽여 자기 아버지에게 저지른 악행을 그에게 갚으셨다.
