1 Now these are the nations which Yahweh left, to test Israel by them, even as many as had not known all the wars of Canaan;Now these are the nations which Jehovah left, to prove Israel by them, even as many of Israel as had not known all the wars of Canaan;여호와께서 가나안의 모든 전쟁을 알지 못하는 이스라엘 사람들을 시험하시려고 남겨 두신 민족들은 이러하다.
2 only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at least those who knew nothing of it before:only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at the least such as beforetime knew nothing thereof:그것은 전쟁을 전혀 겪어 보지 못한 이스라엘 자손의 세대들에게 전쟁을 가르치고 알게 하시려는 것이었다.
3 the five lords of the Philistines, all the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites who lived on Mount Lebanon, from Mount Baal Hermon to the entrance of Hamath.namely, the five lords of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hivites that dwelt in mount Lebanon, from mount Baal-hermon unto the entrance of Hamath.곧 블레셋의 다섯 통치자와 모든 가나안 사람과 시돈 사람과 바알 헤르몬 산에서부터 하맛 어귀에 이르기까지 레바논 산에 사는 히위 사람이었다.
4 They were left to test Israel by them, to know whether they would listen to Yahweh’s commandments, which he commanded their fathers by Moses.And they were left, to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would hearken unto the commandments of Jehovah, which he commanded their fathers by Moses.이 민족들을 남겨 두신 것은 이스라엘을 시험하셔서, 여호와께서 모세를 통해 그들의 조상에게 명하신 계명에 그들이 순종하는지를 알아보시려는 것이었다.
5 The children of Israel lived among the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites.And the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites:그래서 이스라엘 자손은 가나안 사람과 헷 사람과 아모리 사람과 브리스 사람과 히위 사람과 여부스 사람 가운데서 살게 되었다.
6 They took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their own daughters to their sons and served their gods.and they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their own daughters to their sons and served their gods.그들은 이방 사람들의 딸을 아내로 맞이하고 자기 딸을 그들의 아들에게 주었으며, 그들의 신들을 섬겼다.
7 The children of Israel did that which was evil in Yahweh’s sight, and forgot Yahweh their God, and served the Baals and the Asheroth.And the children of Israel did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah, and forgat Jehovah their God, and served the Baalim and the Asheroth.이스라엘 자손은 여호와 보시기에 악한 일을 행하여, 그들의 하나님 여호와를 잊어버리고 바알들과 아세라들을 섬겼다.
8 Therefore Yahweh’s anger burned against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Cushan Rishathaim king of Mesopotamia; and the children of Israel served Cushan Rishathaim eight years.Therefore the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia: and the children of Israel served Cushan-rishathaim eight years.그래서 여호와께서 이스라엘에게 진노하셔서 그들을 메소포타미아 왕 구산 리사다임의 손에 파셨으니, 이스라엘 자손이 구산 리사다임을 여덟 해 동안 섬겼다.
9 When the children of Israel cried to Yahweh, Yahweh raised up a savior to the children of Israel, who saved them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother.And when the children of Israel cried unto Jehovah, Jehovah raised up a saviour to the children of Israel, who saved them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother.이스라엘 자손이 여호와께 부르짖자, 여호와께서 이스라엘 자손을 위해 한 구원자를 세우셔서 그들을 구원하게 하셨으니, 곧 갈렙의 아우 그나스의 아들 옷니엘이었다.
10 Yahweh’s Spirit came on him, and he judged Israel; and he went out to war, and Yahweh delivered Cushan Rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand. His hand prevailed against Cushan Rishathaim.And the Spirit of Jehovah came upon him, and he judged Israel; and he went out to war, and Jehovah delivered Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand: and his hand prevailed against Cushan-rishathaim.여호와의 영이 그에게 임하시니, 그가 이스라엘을 다스리고 전쟁에 나갔다. 여호와께서 메소포타미아 왕 구산 리사다임을 그의 손에 넘겨 주시니, 그의 손이 구산 리사다임을 이겼다.
11 The land had rest forty years, then Othniel the son of Kenaz died.And the land had rest forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died.그리하여 그 땅이 사십 년 동안 평온하였다. 그나스의 아들 옷니엘이 죽었다.
12 The children of Israel again did that which was evil in Yahweh’s sight, and Yahweh strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done that which was evil in Yahweh’s sight.And the children of Israel again did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah: and Jehovah strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah.이스라엘 자손이 다시 여호와 보시기에 악한 일을 행하니, 그들이 여호와 보시기에 악한 일을 행한 까닭에 여호와께서 모압 왕 에글론을 강하게 하셔서 이스라엘을 치게 하셨다.
13 He gathered the children of Ammon and Amalek to himself; and he went and struck Israel, and they possessed the city of palm trees.And he gathered unto him the children of Ammon and Amalek; and he went and smote Israel, and they possessed the city of palm-trees.에글론이 암몬과 아말렉 자손을 자기에게 모아서, 가서 이스라엘을 치고 종려나무 성읍을 차지하였다.
14 The children of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.And the children of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.그래서 이스라엘 자손이 모압 왕 에글론을 열여덟 해 동안 섬겼다.
15 But when the children of Israel cried to Yahweh, Yahweh raised up a savior for them: Ehud the son of Gera, the Benjamite, a left-handed man. The children of Israel sent tribute by him to Eglon the king of Moab.But when the children of Israel cried unto Jehovah, Jehovah raised them up a saviour, Ehud the son of Gera, the Benjamite, a man left-handed. And the children of Israel sent tribute by him unto Eglon the king of Moab.이스라엘 자손이 여호와께 부르짖자, 여호와께서 그들을 위해 한 구원자를 세우셨으니, 곧 베냐민 사람 게라의 아들 에훗이며 왼손잡이였다. 이스라엘 자손이 그를 통해 모압 왕 에글론에게 조공을 보냈다.
16 Ehud made himself a sword which had two edges, a cubit in length; and he wore it under his clothing on his right thigh.And Ehud made him a sword which had two edges, a cubit in length; and he girded it under his raiment upon his right thigh.에훗은 길이가 한 규빗 되는 양날 칼을 만들어 옷 속 오른쪽 넓적다리에 찼다.
17 He offered the tribute to Eglon king of Moab. Now Eglon was a very fat man.And he offered the tribute unto Eglon king of Moab: now Eglon was a very fat man.그가 모압 왕 에글론에게 조공을 바쳤는데, 에글론은 매우 비대한 사람이었다.
18 When Ehud had finished offering the tribute, he sent away the people who carried the tribute.And when he had made an end of offering the tribute, he sent away the people that bare the tribute.에훗이 조공 바치기를 마치고 조공을 메고 온 사람들을 돌려보냈다.
19 But he himself turned back from the stone idols that were by Gilgal, and said, “ I have a secret message for you, O king.” The king said, “ Keep silence!” All who stood by him left him.But he himself turned back from the quarries that were by Gilgal, and said, I have a secret errand unto thee, O king. And he said, Keep silence. And all that stood by him went out from him.그러나 그 자신은 길갈 근처 우상들이 있는 곳에서 돌아와 말하였다. "왕이여, 제가 은밀히 드릴 말씀이 있습니다." 왕이 "조용히 하라!" 하니, 곁에 섰던 자들이 모두 그에게서 물러갔다.
20 Ehud came to him; and he was sitting by himself alone in the cool upper room. Ehud said, “ I have a message from God to you.” He arose out of his seat.And Ehud came unto him; and he was sitting by himself alone in the cool upper room. And Ehud said, I have a message from God unto thee. And he arose out of his seat.에훗이 그에게 나아갔는데, 왕은 서늘한 다락방에 혼자 앉아 있었다. 에훗이 "제가 하나님께서 주신 말씀을 전하려 합니다" 하니, 왕이 자리에서 일어났다.
21 Ehud put out his left hand, and took the sword from his right thigh, and thrust it into his body.And Ehud put forth his left hand, and took the sword from his right thigh, and thrust it into his body:에훗이 왼손을 내밀어 오른쪽 넓적다리에서 칼을 빼어 왕의 배를 찔렀다.
22 The handle also went in after the blade; and the fat closed on the blade, for he didn’t draw the sword out of his body; and it came out behind.and the haft also went in after the blade; and the fat closed upon the blade, for he drew not the sword out of his body; and it came out behind.칼날이 들어가자 손잡이까지 따라 들어갔고, 그가 칼을 배에서 빼지 않으니 기름이 칼날을 덮었으며, 칼끝이 등 뒤로 나왔다.
23 Then Ehud went out onto the porch, and shut the doors of the upper room on him, and locked them.Then Ehud went forth into the porch, and shut the doors of the upper room upon him, and locked them.그러고 나서 에훗은 현관으로 나가, 다락방의 문들을 닫고 잠갔다.
24 After he had gone, his servants came and saw that the doors of the upper room were locked. They said, “ Surely he is covering his feet in the upper room.”Now when he was gone out, his servants came; and they saw, and, behold, the doors of the upper room were locked; and they said, Surely he is covering his feet in the upper chamber.그가 나간 뒤에 왕의 신하들이 와서 보니, 다락방 문들이 잠겨 있었다. 그들이 "왕께서 분명히 서늘한 방에서 용변을 보시는 것이다" 하고 말하였다.
25 They waited until they were ashamed; and behold, he didn’t open the doors of the upper room. Therefore they took the key and opened them, and behold, their lord had fallen down dead on the floor.And they tarried till they were ashamed; and, behold, he opened not the doors of the upper room: therefore they took the key, and opened them; and, behold, their lord was fallen down dead on the earth.그들이 기다리다 못해 민망할 지경이 되었으나, 왕이 다락방 문을 열지 않으므로 열쇠를 가져다가 문을 열어 보니, 그들의 주인이 죽어 땅에 쓰러져 있었다.
26 Ehud escaped while they waited, passed beyond the stone idols, and escaped to Seirah.And Ehud escaped while they tarried, and passed beyond the quarries, and escaped unto Seirah.에훗은 그들이 기다리는 동안 피하여 우상들이 있는 곳을 지나 스이라로 도망하였다.
27 When he had come, he blew a trumpet in the hill country of Ephraim; and the children of Israel went down with him from the hill country, and he led them.And it came to pass, when he was come, that he blew a trumpet in the hill-country of Ephraim; and the children of Israel went down with him from the hill-country, and he before them.그가 이르러 에브라임 산지에서 나팔을 불자, 이스라엘 자손이 그와 함께 산지에서 내려왔고 에훗이 그들 앞에서 인도하였다.
28 He said to them, “ Follow me; for Yahweh has delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand.” They followed him, and took the fords of the Jordan against the Moabites, and didn’t allow any man to pass over.And he said unto them, Follow after me; for Jehovah hath delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand. And they went down after him, and took the fords of the Jordan against the Moabites, and suffered not a man to pass over.에훗이 그들에게 말하였다. "나를 따르라. 여호와께서 너희의 원수 모압 사람들을 너희 손에 넘겨 주셨다." 그들이 에훗을 따라 내려가 모압을 향한 요단강 나루를 점령하고, 한 사람도 건너지 못하게 하였다.
29 They struck at that time about ten thousand men of Moab, every strong man and every man of valor. No man escaped.And they smote of Moab at that time about ten thousand men, every lusty man, and every man of valor; and there escaped not a man.그때에 그들이 모압 사람 약 만 명을 쳤으니, 모두 강건하고 용맹한 자들이었으며 한 사람도 피하지 못하였다.
30 So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. Then the land had rest eighty years.So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest fourscore years.그날에 모압이 이스라엘의 손에 굴복하였고, 그 땅이 팔십 년 동안 평온하였다.
31 After him was Shamgar the son of Anath, who struck six hundred men of the Philistines with an ox goad. He also saved Israel.And after him was Shamgar the son of Anath, who smote of the Philistines six hundred men with an ox-goad: and he also saved Israel.에훗 뒤에 아낫의 아들 삼갈이 있어, 소를 모는 막대기로 블레셋 사람 육백 명을 쳤으니, 그도 이스라엘을 구원하였다.
