1 In those days, when there was no king in Israel, there was a certain Levite living on the farther side of the hill country of Ephraim, who took for himself a concubine out of Bethlehem Judah.And it came to pass in those days, when there was no king in Israel, that there was a certain Levite sojourning on the farther side of the hill-country of Ephraim, who took to him a concubine out of Beth-lehem-judah.이스라엘에 왕이 없던 그 시절에 있었던 일이다. 에브라임 산간 지대 외진 곳에 한 레위 사람이 살고 있었는데, 그는 유다 베들레헴 출신의 한 여자를 첩으로 맞아들였다.
2 His concubine played the prostitute against him, and went away from him to her father’s house to Bethlehem Judah, and was there for four months.And his concubine played the harlot against him, and went away from him unto her father’s house to Beth-lehem-judah, and was there the space of four months.그런데 그의 첩이 그를 배신하고 음행하여, 그를 떠나 유다 베들레헴에 있는 자기 아버지의 집으로 가서 넉 달 동안 그곳에 머물렀다.
3 Her husband arose and went after her to speak kindly to her, to bring her again, having his servant with him and a couple of donkeys. She brought him into her father’s house; and when the father of the young lady saw him, he rejoiced to meet him.And her husband arose, and went after her, to speak kindly unto her, to bring her again, having his servant with him, and a couple of asses: and she brought him into her father’s house; and when the father of the damsel saw him, he rejoiced to meet him.그 남편이 일어나 그 여자에게 따뜻하게 말하여 다시 데려오려고, 종 하나와 나귀 두 마리를 데리고 그 여자를 뒤따라갔다. 여자가 그를 자기 아버지의 집으로 데리고 들어가니, 그 젊은 여자의 아버지가 그를 보고 반갑게 맞이하였다.
4 His father-in-law, the young lady’s father, kept him there; and he stayed with him three days. So they ate and drank, and stayed there.And his father-in-law, the damsel’s father, retained him; and he abode with him three days: so they did eat and drink, and lodged there.그의 장인 곧 그 젊은 여자의 아버지가 그를 붙잡으니, 그가 사흘 동안 함께 머물렀다. 그들은 먹고 마시며 거기서 묵었다.
5 On the fourth day, they got up early in the morning, and he rose up to depart. The young lady’s father said to his son-in-law, “ Strengthen your heart with a morsel of bread, and afterward you shall go your way.”And it came to pass on the fourth day, that they arose early in the morning, and he rose up to depart: and the damsel’s father said unto his son-in-law, Strengthen thy heart with a morsel of bread, and afterward ye shall go your way.나흘째 되는 날, 그들이 아침 일찍 일어나 그가 떠나려 하자, 그 젊은 여자의 아버지가 사위에게 말하였다. "빵 한 조각으로 기운을 차린 다음에 길을 떠나게."
6 So they sat down, ate, and drank, both of them together. Then the young lady’s father said to the man, “ Please be pleased to stay all night, and let your heart be merry.”So they sat down, and did eat and drink, both of them together: and the damsel’s father said unto the man, Be pleased, I pray thee, to tarry all night, and let thy heart be merry.그래서 두 사람이 함께 앉아 먹고 마셨다. 그 젊은 여자의 아버지가 그 사람에게 말하였다. "부디 하룻밤 더 묵으며 마음을 즐겁게 하게."
7 The man rose up to depart; but his father-in-law urged him, and he stayed there again.And the man rose up to depart; but his father-in-law urged him, and he lodged there again.그 사람이 떠나려고 일어났으나, 장인이 간곡히 권하므로 그가 다시 그곳에서 묵었다.
8 He arose early in the morning on the fifth day to depart; and the young lady’s father said, “ Please strengthen your heart and stay until the day declines;” and they both ate.And he arose early in the morning on the fifth day to depart; and the damsel’s father said, Strengthen thy heart, I pray thee, and tarry ye until the day declineth; and they did eat, both of them.닷새째 되는 날, 그가 떠나려고 아침 일찍 일어나니, 그 젊은 여자의 아버지가 말하였다. "부디 기운을 차리고 해가 기울 때까지 더 머물게." 그래서 두 사람이 함께 먹었다.
9 When the man rose up to depart, he, and his concubine, and his servant, his father-in-law, the young lady’s father, said to him, “ Behold, now the day draws toward evening, please stay all night. Behold, the day is ending. Stay here, that your heart may be merry; and tomorrow go on your way early, that you may go home.”And when the man rose up to depart, he, and his concubine, and his servant, his father-in-law, the damsel’s father, said unto him, Behold, now the day draweth toward evening, I pray you tarry all night: behold, the day groweth to an end, lodge here, that thy heart may be merry; and to-morrow get you early on your way, that thou mayest go home.그 사람이 첩과 종과 함께 떠나려고 일어서자, 그의 장인 곧 그 젊은 여자의 아버지가 그에게 말하였다. "보게, 이제 날이 저물어 가네. 부디 하룻밤 더 묵게. 보게, 날이 다 저물었으니 여기서 묵으며 마음을 즐겁게 하게. 그리고 내일 아침 일찍 길을 나서 집으로 돌아가게."
10 But the man wouldn’t stay that night, but he rose up and went near Jebus ( also called Jerusalem ). With him were a couple of saddled donkeys. His concubine also was with him.But the man would not tarry that night, but he rose up and departed, and came over against Jebus ( the same is Jerusalem ): and there were with him a couple of asses saddled; his concubine also was with him.그러나 그 사람은 그날 밤 묵으려 하지 않고 일어나 떠나서, 여부스 곧 예루살렘 맞은편에 이르렀다. 안장을 얹은 나귀 두 마리가 그와 함께 있었고, 그의 첩도 함께 있었다.
11 When they were by Jebus, the day was far spent; and the servant said to his master, “ Please come and let’s enter into this city of the Jebusites, and stay in it.”When they were by Jebus, the day was far spent; and the servant said unto his master, Come, I pray thee, and let us turn aside into this city of the Jebusites, and lodge in it.그들이 여부스 가까이에 이르렀을 때 날이 이미 많이 저물었으므로, 종이 주인에게 말하였다. 12 His master said to him, “ We won’t enter into the city of a foreigner that is not of the children of Israel; but we will pass over to Gibeah.”And his master said unto him, We will not turn aside into the city of a foreigner, that is not of the children of Israel; but we will pass over to Gibeah.그러나 그 주인이 종에게 말하였다. "우리는 이스라엘 자손이 아닌 이방 사람의 성읍으로는 들어가지 않겠다. 기브아까지 건너가자."
13 He said to his servant, “ Come and let’s draw near to one of these places; and we will lodge in Gibeah, or in Ramah.”And he said unto his servant, Come and let us draw near to one of these places; and we will lodge in Gibeah, or in Ramah.그가 또 종에게 말하였다. "자, 이 여러 곳 가운데 한 곳으로 가까이 가서 기브아나 라마에서 묵자."
14 So they passed on and went their way; and the sun went down on them near Gibeah, which belongs to Benjamin.So they passed on and went their way; and the sun went down upon them near to Gibeah, which belongeth to Benjamin.그래서 그들은 계속 나아가 길을 갔는데, 베냐민에 속한 기브아 가까이에 이르렀을 때 해가 그들 위로 졌다.
15 They went over there, to go in to stay in Gibeah. He went in, and sat down in the street of the city; for there was no one who took them into his house to stay.And they turned aside thither, to go in to lodge in Gibeah: and he went in, and sat him down in the street of the city; for there was no man that took them into his house to lodge.그들은 기브아로 들어가 묵으려고 그곳으로 들어섰다. 그가 들어가 성읍 광장에 앉았으나, 그들을 집에 들여 묵게 하는 사람이 아무도 없었다.
16 Behold, an old man came from his work out of the field at evening. Now the man was from the hill country of Ephraim, and he lived in Gibeah; but the men of the place were Benjamites.And, behold, there came an old man from his work out of the field at even: now the man was of the hill-country of Ephraim, and he sojourned in Gibeah; but the men of the place were Benjamites.그때 보라, 한 노인이 저녁에 들에서 일하다가 돌아오고 있었다. 그 사람은 에브라임 산간 지대 출신으로 기브아에 살고 있었는데, 그곳 사람들은 베냐민 자손이었다.
17 He lifted up his eyes, and saw the wayfaring man in the street of the city; and the old man said, “Where are you going? Where did you come from?”And he lifted up his eyes, and saw the wayfaring man in the street of the city; and the old man said, Whither goest thou? and whence comest thou?그 노인이 눈을 들어 성읍 광장에 있는 나그네를 보고 물었다. "어디로 가는 길이오? 어디서 오시오?"
18 He said to him, “ We are passing from Bethlehem Judah to the farther side of the hill country of Ephraim. I am from there, and I went to Bethlehem Judah. I am going to Yahweh’s house; and there is no one who has taken me into his house.And he said unto him, We are passing from Beth-lehem-judah unto the farther side of the hill-country of Ephraim; from thence am I, and I went to Beth-lehem-judah: and I am now going to the house of Jehovah; and there is no man that taketh me into his house.그가 노인에게 대답하였다. "우리는 유다 베들레헴에서 에브라임 산간 지대 외진 곳으로 가는 길입니다. 나는 그곳 출신인데 유다 베들레헴에 갔다가 이제 여호와의 집으로 가는 중입니다. 그런데 나를 집에 들여 주는 사람이 아무도 없습니다.
19 Yet there is both straw and feed for our donkeys; and there is bread and wine also for me, and for your servant, and for the young man who is with your servants. There is no lack of anything.”Yet there is both straw and provender for our asses; and there is bread and wine also for me, and for thy handmaid, and for the young man that is with thy servants: there is no want of anything.우리에게는 나귀들에게 먹일 짚과 여물도 있고, 나와 어르신의 여종과 어르신의 종들과 함께 있는 젊은이를 위한 빵과 포도주도 있으니, 부족한 것이 하나도 없습니다."
20 The old man said, “ Peace be to you! Just let me supply all your needs, but don’t sleep in the street.”And the old man said, Peace be unto thee; howsoever let all thy wants lie upon me; only lodge not in the street.그 노인이 말하였다. "그대에게 평안이 있기를 비오. 그대에게 부족한 것은 무엇이든 다 내가 책임지겠소. 다만 광장에서는 묵지 마시오."
21 So he brought him into his house, and gave the donkeys fodder. Then they washed their feet, and ate and drank.So he brought him into his house, and gave the asses fodder; and they washed their feet, and did eat and drink.그래서 노인이 그를 자기 집으로 데려가 나귀들에게 먹이를 주었고, 그들은 발을 씻고 먹고 마셨다.
22 As they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain wicked fellows, surrounded the house, beating at the door; and they spoke to the master of the house, the old man, saying, “ Bring out the man who came into your house, that we can have sex with him!”As they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain base fellows, beset the house round about, beating at the door; and they spake to the master of the house, the old man, saying, Bring forth the man that came into thy house, that we may know him.그들이 마음을 즐겁게 하고 있을 때, 보라, 그 성읍의 사람들 곧 불량한 자들이 그 집을 에워싸고 문을 두드리며, 집주인 노인에게 말하였다. "당신 집에 들어온 그 사람을 끌어내시오. 우리가 그와 관계하겠소!"
23 The man, the master of the house, went out to them, and said to them, “ No, my brothers, please don’t act so wickedly; since this man has come into my house, don’t do this folly.And the man, the master of the house, went out unto them, and said unto them, Nay, my brethren, I pray you, do not so wickedly; seeing that this man is come into my house, do not this folly.집주인인 그 노인이 그들에게 나가서 말하였다. "안 되오, 내 형제들이여, 부디 그렇게 악한 짓을 하지 마시오. 이 사람이 내 집에 들어왔으니 이런 망령된 짓을 하지 마시오.
24 Behold, here is my virgin daughter and his concubine. I will bring them out now. Humble them, and do with them what seems good to you; but to this man don’t do any such folly.”Behold, here is my daughter a virgin, and his concubine; them I will bring out now, and humble ye them, and do with them what seemeth good unto you: but unto this man do not any such folly.보시오, 여기 처녀인 내 딸과 이 사람의 첩이 있소. 내가 이제 그들을 끌어내겠으니, 그들을 욕보이고 당신들 보기에 좋을 대로 하시오. 그러나 이 사람에게는 그런 망령된 짓을 하지 마시오."
25 But the men wouldn’t listen to him; so the man grabbed his concubine, and brought her out to them; and they had sex with her, and abused her all night until the morning. When the day began to dawn, they let her go.But the men would not hearken to him: so the man laid hold on his concubine, and brought her forth unto them; and they knew her, and abused her all the night until the morning: and when the day began to spring, they let her go.그러나 그 사람들이 노인의 말을 들으려 하지 않으므로, 그 사람이 자기 첩을 붙잡아 그들에게로 끌어내 주었다. 그들은 그 여자와 관계하고 밤새도록 아침까지 그 여자를 욕보이다가, 날이 새기 시작하자 그 여자를 놓아주었다.
26 Then the woman came in the dawning of the day, and fell down at the door of the man’s house where her lord was, until it was light.Then came the woman in the dawning of the day, and fell down at the door of the man’s house where her lord was, till it was light.동틀 무렵에 그 여자가 와서 자기 주인이 있는 집 문 앞에 쓰러져, 날이 밝을 때까지 그대로 있었다.
27 Her lord rose up in the morning and opened the doors of the house, and went out to go his way; and behold, the woman his concubine had fallen down at the door of the house, with her hands on the threshold.And her lord rose up in the morning, and opened the doors of the house, and went out to go his way; and, behold, the woman his concubine was fallen down at the door of the house, with her hands upon the threshold.그 여자의 주인이 아침에 일어나 집 문을 열고 길을 떠나려고 나오니, 보라, 그의 첩인 그 여자가 두 손을 문지방에 얹은 채 집 문 앞에 쓰러져 있었다.
28 He said to her, “ Get up, and let’s get going!” but no one answered. Then he took her up on the donkey; and the man rose up, and went to his place.And he said unto her, Up, and let us be going; but none answered: then he took her up upon the ass; and the man rose up, and gat him unto his place.그가 여자에게 말하였다. "일어나라. 가자." 그러나 아무 대답이 없었다. 그러자 그가 여자를 나귀에 싣고 일어나 자기 고장으로 갔다.
29 When he had come into his house, he took a knife and cut up his concubine, and divided her, limb by limb, into twelve pieces, and sent her throughout all the borders of Israel.And when he was come into his house, he took a knife, and laid hold on his concubine, and divided her, limb by limb, into twelve pieces, and sent her throughout all the borders of Israel.그가 자기 집에 이르러 칼을 들고 자기 첩을 붙잡아 그 시신을 마디마디 열두 토막으로 나누고, 그것을 이스라엘의 모든 지역으로 두루 보냈다.
30 It was so, that all who saw it said, “ Such a deed has not been done or seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt to this day! Consider it, take counsel, and speak.”And it was so, that all that saw it said, There was no such deed done nor seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt unto this day: consider it, take counsel, and speak.그것을 본 모든 사람이 말하였다. "이스라엘 자손이 이집트 땅에서 올라온 날부터 오늘까지 이런 일은 일어난 적도 없고 본 적도 없다! 이 일을 깊이 생각하고 의논하여 말하자."
