1 The children of Israel did that which was evil in Yahweh’s sight, so Yahweh delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years.And the children of Israel did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah: and Jehovah delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years.이스라엘 자손이 여호와 보시기에 악을 행하니, 여호와께서 그들을 일곱 해 동안 미디안의 손에 넘기셨다.
2 The hand of Midian prevailed against Israel; and because of Midian the children of Israel made themselves the dens which are in the mountains, the caves, and the strongholds.And the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel; and because of Midian the children of Israel made them the dens which are in the mountains, and the caves, and the strongholds.미디안의 손이 이스라엘을 억누르니, 이스라엘 자손은 미디안 때문에 산속에 굴과 동굴과 요새를 만들었다.
3 So it was, when Israel had sown, that the Midianites, the Amalekites, and the children of the east came up against them.And so it was, when Israel had sown, that the Midianites came up, and the Amalekites, and the children of the east; they came up against them;이스라엘이 씨를 뿌리고 나면 미디안 사람과 아말렉 사람과 동방 사람들이 올라와 그들을 치곤 했다.
4 They encamped against them, and destroyed the increase of the earth, until you come to Gaza. They left no sustenance in Israel, and no sheep, ox, or donkey.and they encamped against them, and destroyed the increase of the earth, till thou come unto Gaza, and left no sustenance in Israel, neither sheep, nor ox, nor ass.그들은 진을 치고서 가사에 이르기까지 땅의 소출을 망쳐 버렸으며, 이스라엘에 양식이 될 만한 것을 남기지 않았으니, 양이나 소나 나귀도 남기지 않았다.
5 For they came up with their livestock and their tents. They came in as locusts for multitude. Both they and their camels were without number; and they came into the land to destroy it.For they came up with their cattle and their tents; they came in as locusts for multitude; both they and their camels were without number: and they came into the land to destroy it.그들이 가축과 장막을 가지고 올라오는데, 메뚜기 떼처럼 그 수가 많았고, 그들과 그들의 낙타도 셀 수 없을 정도였으니, 그들이 땅을 망치려고 들어왔다.
6 Israel was brought very low because of Midian; and the children of Israel cried to Yahweh.And Israel was brought very low because of Midian; and the children of Israel cried unto Jehovah.이스라엘이 미디안 때문에 심히 쇠약해지니, 이스라엘 자손이 여호와께 부르짖었다.
7 When the children of Israel cried to Yahweh because of Midian,And it came to pass, when the children of Israel cried unto Jehovah because of Midian,이스라엘 자손이 미디안 때문에 여호와께 부르짖었을 때,
8 Yahweh sent a prophet to the children of Israel; and he said to them, “ Yahweh, the God of Israel, says, ‘ I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you out of the house of bondage.that Jehovah sent a prophet unto the children of Israel: and he said unto them, Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you forth out of the house of bondage;여호와께서 한 선지자를 이스라엘 자손에게 보내셨다. 그가 그들에게 말하기를 "이스라엘의 하나님 여호와께서 이렇게 말씀하신다. '내가 너희를 이집트에서 인도해 내었고, 종살이하던 집에서 이끌어 내었으며,
9 I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians and out of the hand of all who oppressed you, and drove them out from before you, and gave you their land.and I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all that oppressed you, and drove them out from before you, and gave you their land;이집트 사람의 손과 너희를 억압하던 모든 자의 손에서 너희를 건져 내었고, 너희 앞에서 그들을 쫓아내고 그들의 땅을 너희에게 주었다.
10 I said to you, “ I am Yahweh your God. You shall not fear the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell.” But you have not listened to my voice.’”and I said unto you, I am Jehovah your God; ye shall not fear the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell. But ye have not hearkened unto my voice.또 내가 너희에게 이르기를, 나는 너희 하나님 여호와이니, 너희가 거주하는 땅의 아모리 사람의 신들을 두려워하지 말라 하였으나, 너희가 내 음성을 듣지 아니하였다.'"
11 Yahweh’s angel came and sat under the oak which was in Ophrah, that belonged to Joash the Abiezrite. His son Gideon was beating out wheat in the wine press, to hide it from the Midianites.And the angel of Jehovah came, and sat under the oak which was in Ophrah, that pertained unto Joash the Abiezrite: and his son Gideon was beating out wheat in the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites.여호와의 천사가 와서 오브라에 있는 상수리나무 아래에 앉았으니, 그곳은 아비에셀 사람 요아스에게 속한 곳이었다. 그의 아들 기드온이 미디안 사람에게 숨기려고 포도주 짜는 틀에서 밀을 타작하고 있었다.
12 Yahweh’s angel appeared to him, and said to him, “ Yahweh is with you, you mighty man of valor!”And the angel of Jehovah appeared unto him, and said unto him, Jehovah is with thee, thou mighty man of valor.여호와의 천사가 그에게 나타나 말하기를 "용맹한 용사여, 여호와께서 너와 함께 계신다!" 하였다.
13 Gideon said to him, “Oh, my lord, if Yahweh is with us, why then has all this happened to us? Where are all his wondrous works which our fathers told us of, saying, ‘Didn’t Yahweh bring us up from Egypt?’ But now Yahweh has cast us off, and delivered us into the hand of Midian.”And Gideon said unto him, Oh, my lord, if Jehovah is with us, why then is all this befallen us? and where are all his wondrous works which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not Jehovah bring us up from Egypt? but now Jehovah hath cast us off, and delivered us into the hand of Midian.기드온이 그에게 말하기를 "오, 내 주여, 만일 여호와께서 우리와 함께 계신다면 어찌하여 이 모든 일이 우리에게 일어났습니까? 우리 조상들이 우리에게 일러 주며 '여호와께서 우리를 이집트에서 인도해 내지 아니하셨느냐?' 하던 그 모든 놀라운 일들이 다 어디에 있습니까? 그러나 이제 여호와께서 우리를 버리시고 미디안의 손에 넘기셨습니다" 하였다.
14 Yahweh looked at him, and said, “ Go in this your might, and save Israel from the hand of Midian. Haven’t I sent you?”And Jehovah looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might, and save Israel from the hand of Midian: have not I sent thee?여호와께서 그를 돌아보시며 말씀하시기를 "네 그 힘을 가지고 가서 이스라엘을 미디안의 손에서 구원하라. 내가 너를 보낸 것이 아니냐?" 하셨다.
15 He said to him, “ O Lord, how shall I save Israel? Behold, my family is the poorest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.”And he said unto him, Oh, Lord, wherewith shall I save Israel? behold, my family is the poorest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.그가 그분께 말하기를 "오, 주여, 제가 무엇으로 이스라엘을 구원하겠습니까? 보십시오, 제 집안은 므낫세 중에서 가장 약하고, 저는 제 아버지의 집에서 가장 보잘것없습니다" 하였다.
16 Yahweh said to him, “ Surely I will be with you, and you shall strike the Midianites as one man.”And Jehovah said unto him, Surely I will be with thee, and thou shalt smite the Midianites as one man.여호와께서 그에게 말씀하시기를 "내가 반드시 너와 함께하리니, 네가 미디안 사람을 한 사람을 치듯 칠 것이다" 하셨다.
17 He said to him, “If now I have found favor in your sight, then show me a sign that it is you who talk with me.And he said unto him, If now I have found favor in thy sight, then show me a sign that it is thou that talkest with me.그가 그분께 말하기를 "이제 제가 주의 눈앞에 은혜를 입었거든, 저와 말씀하시는 분이 바로 주이시라는 표징을 제게 보여 주십시오.
18 Please don’t go away until I come to you, and bring out my present, and lay it before you.” He said, “ I will wait until you come back.”Depart not hence, I pray thee, until I come unto thee, and bring forth my present, and lay it before thee. And he said, I will tarry until thou come again.청하건대, 제가 주께 돌아와 제 예물을 가져다가 주 앞에 차려 놓을 때까지 떠나지 말아 주십시오" 하니, 그분께서 말씀하시기를 "네가 돌아올 때까지 내가 기다리겠다" 하셨다.
19 Gideon went in and prepared a young goat and unleavened cakes of an ephah of meal. He put the meat in a basket and he put the broth in a pot, and brought it out to him under the oak, and presented it.And Gideon went in, and made ready a kid, and unleavened cakes of an ephah of meal: the flesh he put in a basket, and he put the broth in a pot, and brought it out unto him under the oak, and presented it.기드온이 들어가 새끼 염소 한 마리를 준비하고 밀가루 한 에바로 누룩 없는 떡을 만들었다. 고기는 바구니에 담고 국물은 항아리에 담아 상수리나무 아래로 그분께 가지고 나와 차려 드렸다.
20 The angel of God said to him, “ Take the meat and the unleavened cakes, and lay them on this rock, and pour out the broth.” He did so.And the angel of God said unto him, Take the flesh and the unleavened cakes, and lay them upon this rock, and pour out the broth. And he did so.하나님의 천사가 그에게 말하기를 "고기와 누룩 없는 떡을 가져다가 이 바위 위에 놓고 국물을 부으라" 하니, 그가 그대로 하였다.
21 Then Yahweh’s angel stretched out the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the meat and the unleavened cakes; and fire went up out of the rock and consumed the meat and the unleavened cakes. Then Yahweh’s angel departed out of his sight.Then the angel of Jehovah put forth the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and there went up fire out of the rock, and consumed the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and the angel of Jehovah departed out of his sight.그때 여호와의 천사가 손에 든 지팡이 끝을 내밀어 그 고기와 누룩 없는 떡에 대니, 바위에서 불이 올라와 그 고기와 누룩 없는 떡을 살랐다. 그러고 나서 여호와의 천사가 그의 눈앞에서 사라졌다.
22 Gideon saw that he was Yahweh’s angel; and Gideon said, “Alas, Lord Yahweh! Because I have seen Yahweh’s angel face to face!”And Gideon saw that he was the angel of Jehovah; and Gideon said, Alas, O Lord Jehovah! forasmuch as I have seen the angel of Jehovah face to face.기드온은 그가 여호와의 천사인 줄 알고 말하기를 "아, 주 여호와여! 제가 여호와의 천사를 얼굴과 얼굴을 마주하여 보았습니다!" 하였다.
23 Yahweh said to him, “ Peace be to you! Don’t be afraid. You shall not die.”And Jehovah said unto him, Peace be unto thee; fear not: thou shalt not die.여호와께서 그에게 말씀하시기를 "너에게 평강이 있으라! 두려워하지 말라. 너는 죽지 아니하리라" 하셨다.
24 Then Gideon built an altar there to Yahweh, and called it “ Yahweh is Peace.” To this day it is still in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.Then Gideon built an altar there unto Jehovah, and called it Jehovah-shalom: unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.그리하여 기드온이 그곳에 여호와를 위하여 제단을 쌓고 그것을 "여호와는 평강이시다"라고 불렀으니, 그것이 오늘까지도 아비에셀 사람의 오브라에 있다.
25 That same night, Yahweh said to him, “ Take your father’s bull, even the second bull seven years old, and throw down the altar of Baal that your father has, and cut down the Asherah that is by it.And it came to pass the same night, that Jehovah said unto him, Take thy father’s bullock, even the second bullock seven years old, and throw down the altar of Baal that thy father hath, and cut down the Asherah that is by it;그날 밤에 여호와께서 그에게 말씀하시기를 "네 아버지의 소, 곧 일곱 살 된 둘째 소를 끌어다가, 네 아버지의 바알 제단을 헐고 그 곁에 있는 아세라 목상을 찍어 버려라.
26 Then build an altar to Yahweh your God on the top of this stronghold, in an orderly way, and take the second bull, and offer a burnt offering with the wood of the Asherah which you shall cut down.”and build an altar unto Jehovah thy God upon the top of this stronghold, in the orderly manner, and take the second bullock, and offer a burnt-offering with the wood of the Asherah which thou shalt cut down.그리고 이 요새 꼭대기에 네 하나님 여호와를 위하여 제단을 규례대로 쌓고, 둘째 소를 가져다가 네가 찍어 낸 아세라 목상의 나무로 번제를 드려라" 하셨다.
27 Then Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as Yahweh had spoken to him. Because he feared his father’s household and the men of the city, he could not do it by day, but he did it by night.Then Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as Jehovah had spoken unto him: and it came to pass, because he feared his father’s household and the men of the city, so that he could not do it by day, that he did it by night.그리하여 기드온이 자기 종 열 사람을 데리고 여호와께서 그에게 말씀하신 대로 행하였다. 그러나 그가 자기 아버지의 집안과 성읍 사람들을 두려워하였기에 낮에는 하지 못하고 밤에 그 일을 행하였다.
28 When the men of the city arose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was broken down, and the Asherah was cut down that was by it, and the second bull was offered on the altar that was built.And when the men of the city arose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was broken down, and the Asherah was cut down that was by it, and the second bullock was offered upon the altar that was built.성읍 사람들이 아침 일찍 일어나 보니, 바알의 제단이 헐려 있고, 그 곁에 있던 아세라 목상이 찍혀 있으며, 새로 쌓은 제단 위에 둘째 소가 드려져 있었다.
29 They said to one another, “ Who has done this thing?” When they inquired and asked, they said, “ Gideon the son of Joash has done this thing.”And they said one to another, Who hath done this thing? And when they inquired and asked, they said, Gideon the son of Joash hath done this thing.그들이 서로 말하기를 "누가 이 일을 행하였느냐?" 하고, 그들이 알아보며 물었더니 "요아스의 아들 기드온이 이 일을 행하였다"고 하였다.
30 Then the men of the city said to Joash, “ Bring out your son, that he may die, because he has broken down the altar of Baal, and because he has cut down the Asherah that was by it.”Then the men of the city said unto Joash, Bring out thy son, that he may die, because he hath broken down the altar of Baal, and because he hath cut down the Asherah that was by it.그러자 성읍 사람들이 요아스에게 말하기를 "당신 아들을 끌어내시오. 그가 바알의 제단을 헐고 그 곁에 있던 아세라 목상을 찍었으니 죽어야 마땅하오" 하였다.
31 Joash said to all who stood against him, “ Will you contend for Baal? Or will you save him? He who will contend for him, let him be put to death by morning! If he is a god, let him contend for himself, because someone has broken down his altar!”And Joash said unto all that stood against him, Will ye contend for Baal? or will ye save him? he that will contend for him, let him be put to death whilst it is yet morning: if he be a god, let him contend for himself, because one hath broken down his altar.요아스가 자기에게 맞서 선 모든 사람에게 말하기를 "너희가 바알을 위하여 다투려느냐? 아니면 그를 구하려느냐? 그를 위하여 다투는 자는 아침이 되기 전에 죽임을 당하리라. 그가 신이라면, 누군가 그의 제단을 헐었으니, 스스로 다투게 하라" 하였다.
32 Therefore on that day he named him Jerub-Baal, saying, “Let Baal contend against him, because he has broken down his altar.”Therefore on that day he called him Jerubbaal, saying, Let Baal contend against him, because he hath broken down his altar.그러므로 그날에 그가 기드온을 "여룹바알"이라 불렀으니, 이는 "기드온이 바알의 제단을 헐었으니 바알이 그와 다투게 하라"는 뜻이었다.
33 Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the children of the east assembled themselves together; and they passed over, and encamped in the valley of Jezreel.Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the children of the east assembled themselves together; and they passed over, and encamped in the valley of Jezreel.그때 모든 미디안 사람과 아말렉 사람과 동방 사람들이 함께 모여 강을 건너와 이스르엘 골짜기에 진을 쳤다.
34 But Yahweh’s Spirit came on Gideon, and he blew a trumpet; and Abiezer was gathered together to follow him.But the Spirit of Jehovah came upon Gideon; and he blew a trumpet; and Abiezer was gathered together after him.그러나 여호와의 영이 기드온에게 임하시니, 그가 나팔을 불매 아비에셀 사람들이 그를 따라 모였다.
35 He sent messengers throughout all Manasseh, and they also were gathered together to follow him. He sent messengers to Asher, to Zebulun, and to Naphtali; and they came up to meet them.And he sent messengers throughout all Manasseh; and they also were gathered together after him: and he sent messengers unto Asher, and unto Zebulun, and unto Naphtali; and they came up to meet them.그가 므낫세 온 땅에 사자들을 보내니 그들도 그를 따라 모였고, 또 아셀과 스불론과 납달리에 사자들을 보내니 그들도 올라와 그들을 맞이하였다.
36 Gideon said to God, “ If you will save Israel by my hand, as you have spoken,And Gideon said unto God, If thou wilt save Israel by my hand, as thou hast spoken,기드온이 하나님께 아뢰기를 "주께서 말씀하신 대로 제 손으로 이스라엘을 구원하시려거든,
37 behold, I will put a fleece of wool on the threshing floor. If there is dew on the fleece only, and it is dry on all the ground, then I’ll know that you will save Israel by my hand, as you have spoken.”behold, I will put a fleece of wool on the threshing-floor; if there be dew on the fleece only, and it be dry upon all the ground, then shall I know that thou wilt save Israel by my hand, as thou hast spoken.보십시오, 제가 양털 한 뭉치를 타작마당에 두겠습니다. 만일 이슬이 양털에만 있고 온 땅은 마르거든, 주께서 말씀하신 대로 제 손으로 이스라엘을 구원하실 줄 제가 알겠습니다" 하였다.
38 It was so; for he rose up early on the next day, and pressed the fleece together, and wrung the dew out of the fleece, a bowl full of water.And it was so; for he rose up early on the morrow, and pressed the fleece together, and wrung the dew out of the fleece, a bowlful of water.그대로 되었다. 그가 이튿날 일찍 일어나 양털을 짜니, 양털에서 이슬을 짜낸 물이 한 그릇에 가득하였다.
39 Gideon said to God, “Don’t let your anger be kindled against me, and I will speak but this once. Please let me make a trial just this once with the fleece. Let it now be dry only on the fleece, and on all the ground let there be dew.”And Gideon said unto God, Let not thine anger be kindled against me, and I will speak but this once: let me make trial, I pray thee, but this once with the fleece; let it now be dry only upon the fleece, and upon all the ground let there be dew.기드온이 하나님께 아뢰기를 "제게 진노하지 마십시오. 이번만 더 말씀드리겠습니다. 청하건대, 양털로 이번 한 번만 더 시험하게 해 주십시오. 이번에는 양털만 마르고 온 땅에는 이슬이 있게 해 주십시오" 하였다.
40 God did so that night; for it was dry on the fleece only, and there was dew on all the ground.And God did so that night: for it was dry upon the fleece only, and there was dew on all the ground.하나님께서 그날 밤에 그대로 하시니, 양털만 마르고 온 땅에는 이슬이 있었다.
