1 When all the kings who were beyond the Jordan, in the hill country, and in the lowland, and on all the shore of the great sea in front of Lebanon, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard of itAnd it came to pass, when all the kings that were beyond the Jordan, in the hill-country, and in the lowland, and on all the shore of the great sea in front of Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard thereof;요단 강 건너편, 곧 산지와 평지와 레바논 앞 큰 바다의 온 해안 지역에 있던 모든 왕, 즉 헷 사람과 아모리 사람과 가나안 사람과 브리스 사람과 히위 사람과 여부스 사람의 왕들이 이 소식을 듣고
2 they gathered themselves together to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord.that they gathered themselves together, to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord.한마음으로 함께 모여 여호수아와 이스라엘에 맞서 싸우려 하였다.
3 But when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and to Ai,But when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done unto Jericho and to Ai,그러나 기브온 주민들은 여호수아가 여리고와 아이 성에 행한 일을 듣고는
4 they also resorted to a ruse, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks on their donkeys, and old, torn-up and bound up wineskins,they also did work wilily, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks upon their asses, and wine-skins, old and rent and bound up,꾀를 내어, 마치 자기들이 사절단인 것처럼 꾸미고 가서, 낡은 자루와 낡고 찢어져 기운 가죽 포도주 부대를 나귀에 싣고,
5 and old and patched sandals on their feet, and wore old garments. All the bread of their food supply was dry and moldy.and old and patched shoes upon their feet, and old garments upon them; and all the bread of their provision was dry and was become mouldy.발에는 낡아서 기운 신을 신고 낡은 옷을 입었으며, 그들이 가져온 양식인 빵은 모두 말라서 곰팡이가 슬어 있었다.
6 They went to Joshua at the camp at Gilgal, and said to him and to the men of Israel, “ We have come from a far country. Now therefore make a covenant with us.”And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said unto him, and to the men of Israel, We are come from a far country: now therefore make ye a covenant with us.그들이 길갈 진영으로 여호수아에게 나아가 그와 이스라엘 사람들에게 말하였다. "우리는 먼 나라에서 왔습니다. 그러니 이제 우리와 언약을 맺어 주십시오."
7 The men of Israel said to the Hivites, “What if you live among us? How could we make a covenant with you?”And the men of Israel said unto the Hivites, Peradventure ye dwell among us; and how shall we make a covenant with you?이스라엘 사람들이 히위 사람들에게 말하였다. "어쩌면 너희가 우리 가운데 살고 있는지도 모르는데, 우리가 어떻게 너희와 언약을 맺겠느냐?"
8 They said to Joshua, “We are your servants.” Joshua said to them, “ Who are you? Where do you come from?”And they said unto Joshua, We are thy servants. And Joshua said unto them, Who are ye? and from whence come ye?그들이 여호수아에게 말하였다. "우리는 당신의 종입니다." 여호수아가 그들에게 물었다. "너희는 누구이며 어디서 왔느냐?"
9 They said to him, “ Your servants have come from a very far country because of the name of Yahweh your God; for we have heard of his fame, all that he did in Egypt,And they said unto him, From a very far country thy servants are come because of the name of Jehovah thy God: for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt,그들이 여호수아에게 대답하였다. "당신의 종들은 당신의 하나님 여호와의 이름 때문에 아주 먼 나라에서 왔습니다. 우리가 그분의 명성과 그분이 이집트에서 행하신 모든 일을 들었기 때문입니다.
10 and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon and to Og king of Bashan, who was at Ashtaroth.and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites, that were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon, and to Og king of Bashan, who was at Ashtaroth.또 그분이 요단 강 건너편에 있던 아모리 사람의 두 왕, 곧 헤스본 왕 시혼과 아스다롯에 있던 바산 왕 옥에게 행하신 모든 일도 들었습니다.
11 Our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spoke to us, saying, ‘ Take supplies in your hand for the journey, and go to meet them. Tell them, “ We are your servants. Now make a covenant with us.”’And our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spake to us, saying, Take provision in your hand for the journey, and go to meet them, and say unto them, We are your servants: and now make ye a covenant with us.그래서 우리 장로들과 우리 나라의 모든 주민이 우리에게 말하였습니다. '길을 떠날 양식을 손에 챙겨 들고 가서 그들을 만나, 우리는 당신들의 종이니 이제 우리와 언약을 맺어 달라고 말하여라.'
12 This our bread we took hot for our supplies out of our houses on the day we went out to go to you; but now, behold, it is dry, and has become moldy.This our bread we took hot for our provision out of our houses on the day we came forth to go unto you; but now, behold, it is dry, and is become mouldy:우리가 당신들에게 오려고 집을 떠나던 날, 이 빵을 따뜻할 때 양식으로 챙겼는데, 보십시오, 이제는 말라서 곰팡이가 슬었습니다.
13 These wineskins, which we filled, were new; and behold, they are torn. These our garments and our sandals have become old because of the very long journey.”and these wine-skins, which we filled, were new; and, behold, they are rent: and these our garments and our shoes are become old by reason of the very long journey.우리가 채웠던 이 가죽 포도주 부대도 새것이었는데, 보십시오, 이렇게 찢어졌습니다. 또 우리의 이 옷과 신도 길이 매우 멀어서 다 낡아 버렸습니다."
14 The men sampled their provisions, and didn’t ask counsel from Yahweh’s mouth.And the men took of their provision, and asked not counsel at the mouth of Jehovah.이스라엘 사람들은 그들의 양식을 살펴보기만 하고 여호와의 입에 묻지 않았다.
15 Joshua made peace with them, and made a covenant with them, to let them live. The princes of the congregation swore to them.And Joshua made peace with them, and made a covenant with them, to let them live: and the princes of the congregation sware unto them.여호수아가 그들과 화친하여 그들을 살려 두기로 언약을 맺었고, 회중의 지도자들도 그들에게 맹세하였다.
16 At the end of three days after they had made a covenant with them, they heard that they were their neighbors, and that they lived among them.And it came to pass at the end of three days after they had made a covenant with them, that they heard that they were their neighbors, and that they dwelt among them.그들과 언약을 맺은 지 사흘이 지난 뒤에, 그들이 사실은 이웃이며 자기들 가운데 살고 있다는 것을 이스라엘이 알게 되었다.
17 The children of Israel traveled and came to their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, Chephirah, Beeroth, and Kiriath Jearim.And the children of Israel journeyed, and came unto their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kiriath-jearim.이스라엘 자손이 길을 떠나 사흘째 되는 날에 그들의 성읍들에 이르렀는데, 그들의 성읍은 기브온과 그비라와 브에롯과 기럇여아림이었다.
18 The children of Israel didn’t strike them, because the princes of the congregation had sworn to them by Yahweh, the God of Israel. All the congregation murmured against the princes.And the children of Israel smote them not, because the princes of the congregation had sworn unto them by Jehovah, the God of Israel. And all the congregation murmured against the princes.그러나 이스라엘 자손은 그들을 치지 않았으니, 이는 회중의 지도자들이 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와의 이름으로 그들에게 맹세하였기 때문이다. 온 회중이 지도자들을 원망하였다.
19 But all the princes said to all the congregation, “ We have sworn to them by Yahweh, the God of Israel. Now therefore we may not touch them.But all the princes said unto all the congregation, We have sworn unto them by Jehovah, the God of Israel: now therefore we may not touch them.그러나 모든 지도자가 온 회중에게 말하였다. "우리가 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와의 이름으로 그들에게 맹세하였으니, 이제 우리가 그들을 건드릴 수 없다.
20 We will do this to them, and let them live; lest wrath be on us, because of the oath which we swore to them.”This we will do to them, and let them live; lest wrath be upon us, because of the oath which we sware unto them.우리가 그들에게 이렇게 하리니, 그들을 살려 두자. 그렇지 않으면 우리가 그들에게 한 맹세 때문에 진노가 우리에게 임할 것이다."
21 The princes said to them, “ Let them live.” So they became wood cutters and drawers of water for all the congregation, as the princes had spoken to them.And the princes said unto them, Let them live: so they became hewers of wood and drawers of water unto all the congregation, as the princes had spoken unto them.지도자들이 그들에게 말하였다. "그들을 살려 두라." 그래서 그들은 지도자들이 말한 대로 온 회중을 위하여 나무를 패고 물을 긷는 자가 되었다.
22 Joshua called for them, and he spoke to them, saying, “ Why have you deceived us, saying, ‘ We are very far from you,’ when you live among us?And Joshua called for them, and he spake unto them, saying, Wherefore have ye beguiled us, saying, We are very far from you; when ye dwell among us?여호수아가 그들을 불러서 말하였다. "너희가 우리 가운데 살면서 어찌하여 우리를 속여 '우리는 너희에게서 아주 멀리 떨어져 있다'고 하였느냐?
23 Now therefore you are cursed, and some of you will never fail to be slaves, both wood cutters and drawers of water for the house of my God.”Now therefore ye are cursed, and there shall never fail to be of you bondmen, both hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God.그러므로 이제 너희는 저주를 받았으니, 너희 가운데서 종이 끊이지 않을 것이며, 내 하나님의 집을 위하여 나무를 패고 물을 긷는 자가 될 것이다."
24 They answered Joshua, and said, “ Because your servants were certainly told how Yahweh your God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you. Therefore we were very afraid for our lives because of you, and have done this thing.And they answered Joshua, and said, Because it was certainly told thy servants, how that Jehovah thy God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you; therefore we were sore afraid for our lives because of you, and have done this thing.그들이 여호수아에게 대답하였다. "당신의 하나님 여호와께서 그분의 종 모세에게 명하시어 이 모든 땅을 당신들에게 주고 이 땅의 모든 주민을 당신들 앞에서 멸하라 하셨다는 것을 당신의 종들이 분명히 들었습니다. 그래서 우리가 당신들 때문에 우리 목숨이 매우 두려워 이 일을 행하였습니다.
25 Now, behold, we are in your hand. Do to us as it seems good and right to you to do.”And now, behold, we are in thy hand: as it seemeth good and right unto thee to do unto us, do.이제 보십시오, 우리가 당신의 손에 있으니, 당신이 보시기에 좋고 옳은 대로 우리에게 행하십시오."
26 He did so to them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, so that they didn’t kill them.And so did he unto them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, that they slew them not.여호수아가 그들에게 그대로 행하여, 그들을 이스라엘 자손의 손에서 건져 내어 죽이지 못하게 하였다.
27 That day Joshua made them wood cutters and drawers of water for the congregation and for Yahweh’s altar to this day, in the place which he should choose.And Joshua made them that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation, and for the altar of Jehovah, unto this day, in the place which he should choose.그날 여호수아는 그들을 회중을 위하여, 또 여호와께서 택하실 곳에서 여호와의 제단을 위하여 나무를 패고 물을 긷는 자로 삼았으니, 오늘날까지 그러하다.
