1 Don’t boast about tomorrow; for you don’t know what a day may bring.Boast not thyself of to-morrow; For thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.내일 일을 자랑하지 마라. 하루 사이에 무슨 일이 일어날지 너는 알지 못한다.
2 Let another man praise you, and not your own mouth; a stranger, and not your own lips.Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; A stranger, and not thine own lips.네 입으로 너 자신을 칭찬하지 말고 다른 사람이 너를 칭찬하게 하라. 네 입술이 아니라 낯선 사람이 너를 칭찬하게 하라.
3 A stone is heavy, and sand is a burden; but a fool’s provocation is heavier than both.A stone is heavy, and the sand weighty; But a fool’s vexation is heavier than they both.돌도 무겁고 모래도 짐이 되지만, 어리석은 사람이 일으키는 짜증은 그 둘보다 더 무겁다.
4 Wrath is cruel, and anger is overwhelming; but who is able to stand before jealousy?Wrath is cruel, and anger is overwhelming; But who is able to stand before jealousy?분노는 잔인하고 노여움은 휩쓸어 가지만, 누가 질투 앞에 설 수 있겠는가?
5 Better is open rebuke than hidden love.Better is open rebuke Than love that is hidden.드러내 놓고 꾸짖는 것이 숨겨 둔 사랑보다 낫다.
6 The wounds of a friend are faithful, although the kisses of an enemy are profuse.Faithful are the wounds of a friend; But the kisses of an enemy are profuse.친구가 입히는 상처는 신실하지만, 원수가 퍼붓는 입맞춤은 거짓이 가득하다.
7 A full soul loathes a honeycomb; but to a hungry soul, every bitter thing is sweet.The full soul loatheth a honeycomb; But to the hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet.배부른 사람은 꿀송이도 싫어하지만, 굶주린 사람에게는 쓴 것마저 모두 달다.
8 As a bird that wanders from her nest, so is a man who wanders from his home.As a bird that wandereth from her nest, So is a man that wandereth from his place.둥지를 떠나 떠도는 새처럼, 제 집을 떠나 떠도는 사람도 그러하다.
9 Perfume and incense bring joy to the heart; so does earnest counsel from a man’s friend.Oil and perfume rejoice the heart; So doth the sweetness of a man’s friend that cometh of hearty counsel.향수와 향이 마음을 기쁘게 하듯, 친구의 진심 어린 조언도 마음을 기쁘게 한다.
10 Don’t forsake your friend and your father’s friend. Don’t go to your brother’s house in the day of your disaster. A neighbor who is near is better than a distant brother.Thine own friend, and thy father’s friend, forsake not; And go not to thy brother’s house in the day of thy calamity: Better is a neighbor that is near than a brother far off.네 친구와 네 아버지의 친구를 저버리지 마라. 네가 재난을 당하는 날에 네 형제의 집으로 가지 마라. 멀리 있는 형제보다 가까이 있는 이웃이 더 낫다.
11 Be wise, my son, and bring joy to my heart, then I can answer my tormentor.My son, be wise, and make my heart glad, That I may answer him that reproacheth me.내 아들아, 지혜로워져서 내 마음을 기쁘게 하여라. 그러면 나를 비웃는 자에게 내가 대답할 수 있으리라.
12 A prudent man sees danger and takes refuge; but the simple pass on, and suffer for it.A prudent man seeth the evil, and hideth himself; But the simple pass on, and suffer for it.슬기로운 사람은 위험을 보고 몸을 피하지만, 어리석은 사람은 그냥 나아가다가 해를 입는다.
13 Take his garment when he puts up collateral for a stranger. Hold it for a wayward woman!Take his garment that is surety for a stranger; And hold him in pledge that is surety for a foreign woman.낯선 사람의 빚보증을 선 자에게는 그 옷을 잡아 두어라. 제멋대로인 여인의 보증을 선 자에게도 그것을 잡아 두어라.
14 He who blesses his neighbor with a loud voice early in the morning, it will be taken as a curse by him.He that blesseth his friend with a loud voice, rising early in the morning, It shall be counted a curse to him.이른 아침에 큰 소리로 자기 이웃을 축복하는 사람은 도리어 저주하는 것으로 여겨질 것이다.
15 A continual dropping on a rainy day and a contentious wife are alike:A continual dropping in a very rainy day And a contentious woman are alike:비 오는 날에 끊임없이 떨어지는 빗방울과 다투기 좋아하는 아내는 똑같다.
16 restraining her is like restraining the wind, or like grasping oil in his right hand.He that would restrain her restraineth the wind; And his right hand encountereth oil.그런 여인을 다스리는 것은 바람을 붙잡는 것 같고, 오른손으로 기름을 움켜쥐는 것 같다.
17 Iron sharpens iron; so a man sharpens his friend’s countenance.Iron sharpeneth iron; So a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.쇠가 쇠를 날카롭게 하듯, 사람이 자기 친구의 얼굴을 날카롭게 한다.
18 Whoever tends the fig tree shall eat its fruit. He who looks after his master shall be honored.Whoso keepeth the fig-tree shall eat the fruit thereof; And he that regardeth his master shall be honored.무화과나무를 돌보는 사람은 그 열매를 먹고, 자기 주인을 잘 섬기는 사람은 영광을 얻는다.
19 Like water reflects a face, so a man’s heart reflects the man.As in water face answereth to face, So the heart of man to man.물이 얼굴을 비추듯, 사람의 마음은 그 사람을 비춘다.
20 Sheol and Abaddon are never satisfied; and a man’s eyes are never satisfied.Sheol and Abaddon are never satisfied; And the eyes of man are never satisfied.스올과 아바돈이 결코 만족하지 않듯, 사람의 눈도 결코 만족하지 않는다.
21 The crucible is for silver, and the furnace for gold; but man is refined by his praise.The refining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold; And a man is tried by his praise.도가니는 은을 위한 것이요 풀무는 금을 위한 것이지만, 사람은 그가 받는 칭찬으로 단련된다.
22 Though you grind a fool in a mortar with a pestle along with grain, yet his foolishness will not be removed from him.Though thou shouldest bray a fool in a mortar with a pestle along with bruised grain, Yet will not his foolishness depart from him.어리석은 사람을 곡식과 함께 절구에 넣고 공이로 찧을지라도, 그의 어리석음은 그에게서 떠나지 않을 것이다.
23 Know well the state of your flocks, and pay attention to your herds,Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks, And look well to thy herds:네 양 떼의 형편을 잘 알고, 네 소 떼에 마음을 기울여라.
24 for riches are not forever, nor does the crown endure to all generations.For riches are not for ever; And doth the crown endure unto all generations?재물은 영원하지 않고, 면류관도 대대로 이어지지는 않기 때문이다.
25 The hay is removed, and the new growth appears, the grasses of the hills are gathered in.The hay is carried, and the tender grass showeth itself, And the herbs of the mountains are gathered in.풀이 베어지고 나면 새 움이 돋아나고, 산의 풀들이 거두어진다.
26 The lambs are for your clothing, and the goats are the price of a field.The lambs are for thy clothing, And the goats are the price of the field;어린양들은 네 옷을 위한 것이요, 염소들은 밭을 사는 값이 된다.
27 There will be plenty of goats’ milk for your food, for your family’s food, and for the nourishment of your servant girls.And there will be goats’ milk enough for thy food, for the food of thy household, And maintenance for thy maidens.염소 젖이 넉넉하여 네 양식과 네 집안의 양식이 되고, 네 여종들을 먹이는 데도 쓰일 것이다.
