1 The words of King Lemuel — the revelation which his mother taught him:The words of king Lemuel; the oracle which his mother taught him.르무엘 왕의 말씀이니, 그의 어머니가 그에게 가르쳐 준 교훈이다.
2 “Oh, my son! Oh, son of my womb! Oh, son of my vows!What, my son? and what, O son of my womb? And what, O son of my vows?내 아들아, 내 태에서 난 아들아, 내가 서원하여 얻은 아들아, 무엇을 말하랴.
3 Don’t give your strength to women, nor your ways to that which destroys kings.Give not thy strength unto women, Nor thy ways to that which destroyeth kings.네 힘을 여자들에게 쏟지 말고, 왕들을 무너뜨리는 그 길로 네 행실을 내주지 마라.
4 It is not for kings, Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine, nor for princes to say, ‘Where is strong drink?’It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; Nor for princes to say, Where is strong drink?르무엘아, 술을 마시는 것은 왕에게 합당하지 않으니, 왕들이 포도주를 마시거나 통치자들이 독한 술을 찾는 것은 마땅하지 않다.
5 lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the justice due to anyone who is afflicted.Lest they drink, and forget the law, And pervert the justice due to any that is afflicted.그들이 마시고서 법을 잊어버리고, 고난당하는 모든 사람의 정당한 권리를 굽게 할까 두렵기 때문이다.
6 Give strong drink to him who is ready to perish, and wine to the bitter in soul.Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, And wine unto the bitter in soul:죽게 된 사람에게는 독한 술을 주고, 마음이 괴로운 사람에게는 포도주를 주어라.
7 Let him drink, and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more.Let him drink, and forget his poverty, And remember his misery no more.그가 마시고서 자신의 가난을 잊고, 다시는 자기 비참함을 기억하지 않게 하여라.
8 Open your mouth for the mute, in the cause of all who are left desolate.Open thy mouth for the dumb, In the cause of all such as are left desolate.너는 말 못 하는 사람을 위하여, 또 버림받은 모든 사람의 사정을 위하여 네 입을 열어라.
9 Open your mouth, judge righteously, and serve justice to the poor and needy.”Open thy mouth, judge righteously, And minister justice to the poor and needy.네 입을 열어 공정하게 재판하고, 가난하고 궁핍한 사람에게 정의를 베풀어라.
10 Who can find a worthy woman? For her value is far above rubies.A worthy woman who can find? For her price is far above rubies.누가 현숙한 여인을 찾을 수 있겠는가. 그 값은 진주보다 훨씬 귀하다.
11 The heart of her husband trusts in her. He shall have no lack of gain.The heart of her husband trusteth in her, And he shall have no lack of gain.그 남편의 마음이 그녀를 신뢰하니, 그에게는 얻을 것이 부족하지 않다.
12 She does him good, and not harm, all the days of her life.She doeth him good and not evil All the days of her life.그녀는 평생토록 남편에게 선을 행하고 해를 끼치지 않는다.
13 She seeks wool and flax, and works eagerly with her hands.She seeketh wool and flax, And worketh willingly with her hands.그녀는 양털과 삼을 구하여, 부지런히 손으로 일한다.
14 She is like the merchant ships. She brings her bread from afar.She is like the merchant-ships; She bringeth her bread from afar.그녀는 상인의 배와 같아서, 먼 곳에서 양식을 가져온다.
15 She rises also while it is yet night, gives food to her household, and portions for her servant girls.She riseth also while it is yet night, And giveth food to her household, And their task to her maidens.또한 아직 밤이 깊었을 때에 일어나, 집안 식구에게 먹을 것을 주고, 여종들에게 일감을 나누어 준다.
16 She considers a field, and buys it. With the fruit of her hands, she plants a vineyard.She considereth a field, and buyeth it; With the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard.그녀는 밭을 살펴보고 그것을 사며, 자기 손으로 거둔 것으로 포도원을 가꾼다.
17 She arms her waist with strength, and makes her arms strong.She girdeth her loins with strength, And maketh strong her arms.그녀는 힘으로 허리를 동이고, 자기 팔을 굳세게 한다.
18 She perceives that her merchandise is profitable. Her lamp doesn’t go out by night.She perceiveth that her merchandise is profitable; Her lamp goeth not out by night.그녀는 자기 장사가 잘되는 것을 알기에, 그 등불이 밤에도 꺼지지 않는다.
19 She lays her hands to the distaff, and her hands hold the spindle.She layeth her hands to the distaff, And her hands hold the spindle.그녀는 손으로 물레질을 하고, 그 손가락으로 가락을 잡는다.
20 She opens her arms to the poor; yes, she extends her hands to the needy.She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; Yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy.그녀는 가난한 사람에게 손을 펴고, 궁핍한 사람에게 손을 내민다.
21 She is not afraid of the snow for her household, for all her household are clothed with scarlet.She is not afraid of the snow for her household; For all her household are clothed with scarlet.그녀는 집안을 위하여 눈을 두려워하지 않으니, 온 식구가 다 붉은 옷을 입었기 때문이다.
22 She makes for herself carpets of tapestry. Her clothing is fine linen and purple.She maketh for herself carpets of tapestry; Her clothing is fine linen and purple.그녀는 자기를 위하여 아름다운 이불을 만들고, 고운 모시와 자색 옷을 입는다.
23 Her husband is respected in the gates, when he sits among the elders of the land.Her husband is known in the gates, When he sitteth among the elders of the land.그 남편은 성문에서 존경을 받으며, 그 땅의 장로들과 함께 자리에 앉는다.
24 She makes linen garments and sells them, and delivers sashes to the merchant.She maketh linen garments and selleth them, And delivereth girdles unto the merchant.그녀는 모시옷을 지어 팔고, 띠를 만들어 상인에게 넘겨 준다.
25 Strength and dignity are her clothing. She laughs at the time to come.Strength and dignity are her clothing; And she laugheth at the time to come.힘과 위엄이 그녀의 옷이며, 다가올 날을 보고도 웃는다.
26 She opens her mouth with wisdom. Kind instruction is on her tongue.She openeth her mouth with wisdom; And the law of kindness is on her tongue.그녀는 지혜로 입을 열고, 그 혀에는 진실한 가르침이 있다.
27 She looks well to the ways of her household, and doesn’t eat the bread of idleness.She looketh well to the ways of her household, And eateth not the bread of idleness.그녀는 집안일을 잘 살피며, 게으름의 양식을 먹지 않는다.
28 Her children rise up and call her blessed. Her husband also praises her:Her children rise up, and call her blessed; Her husband also, and he praiseth her, saying:그 자녀들이 일어나 그녀를 복되다 일컫고, 그 남편도 그녀를 칭찬하여 이렇게 말한다.
29 “ Many women do noble things, but you excel them all.”Many daughters have done worthily, But thou excellest them all.“덕을 행하는 여자가 많으나, 그대는 그들 모두보다 뛰어나구나.”
30 Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain; but a woman who fears Yahweh, she shall be praised.Grace is deceitful, and beauty is vain; But a woman that feareth Jehovah, she shall be praised.고운 것도 거짓되고 아름다움도 헛되지만, 여호와를 경외하는 여인은 칭찬을 받을 것이다.
31 Give her of the fruit of her hands! Let her works praise her in the gates!Give her of the fruit of her hands; And let her works praise her in the gates.그녀가 손으로 거둔 열매를 그녀에게 돌리고, 그녀의 행한 일이 성문에서 그녀를 칭찬하게 하여라.
