1 A good name is more desirable than great riches, and loving favor is better than silver and gold.A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, And loving favor rather than silver and gold.좋은 평판이 큰 재물보다 더 바람직하고, 사랑받는 것이 은이나 금보다 더 낫다.
2 The rich and the poor have this in common: Yahweh is the maker of them all.The rich and the poor meet together: Jehovah is the maker of them all.부유한 사람과 가난한 사람에게는 공통점이 있으니, 여호와께서 그들 모두를 지으신 분이라는 것이다.
3 A prudent man sees danger and hides himself; but the simple pass on, and suffer for it.A prudent man seeth the evil, and hideth himself; But the simple pass on, and suffer for it.슬기로운 사람은 위험을 보고 몸을 숨기지만, 어리석은 사람은 그냥 지나가다가 화를 당한다.
4 The result of humility and the fear of Yahweh is wealth, honor, and life.The reward of humility and the fear of Jehovah Is riches, and honor, and life.겸손과 여호와를 경외함의 결과는 부와 영예와 생명이다.
5 Thorns and snares are in the path of the wicked; whoever guards his soul stays far from them.Thorns and snares are in the way of the perverse: He that keepeth his soul shall be far from them.가시와 올무가 악한 사람의 길에 놓여 있으나, 자기 영혼을 지키는 사람은 그것들을 멀리한다.
6 Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.Train up a child in the way he should go, And even when he is old he will not depart from it.마땅히 걸어야 할 길로 아이를 가르쳐 키우면, 그가 늙어서도 그 길을 떠나지 않을 것이다.
7 The rich rule over the poor. The borrower is servant to the lender.The rich ruleth over the poor; And the borrower is servant to the lender.부유한 사람은 가난한 사람을 지배하고, 빚진 사람은 빌려준 사람의 종이 된다.
8 He who sows wickedness reaps trouble, and the rod of his fury will be destroyed.He that soweth iniquity shall reap calamity; And the rod of his wrath shall fail.악을 뿌리는 사람은 재앙을 거두고, 그 분노의 매는 꺾이고 만다.
9 He who has a generous eye will be blessed, for he shares his food with the poor.He that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed; For he giveth of his bread to the poor.너그러운 눈을 가진 사람은 복을 받으리니, 자기 양식을 가난한 사람과 나누기 때문이다.
10 Drive out the mocker, and strife will go out; yes, quarrels and insults will stop.Cast out the scoffer, and contention will go out; Yea, strife and ignominy will cease.거만한 사람을 내쫓으면 다툼이 사라지고, 분쟁과 모욕도 그칠 것이다.
11 He who loves purity of heart and speaks gracefully is the king’s friend.He that loveth pureness of heart, For the grace of his lips the king will be his friend.마음의 순결함을 사랑하고 품위 있게 말하는 사람은 왕의 친구가 된다.
12 Yahweh’s eyes watch over knowledge, but he frustrates the words of the unfaithful.The eyes of Jehovah preserve him that hath knowledge; But he overthroweth the words of the treacherous man.여호와의 눈은 지식을 지켜보시지만, 그분은 신실하지 못한 사람의 말을 무너뜨리신다.
13 The sluggard says, “ There is a lion outside! I will be killed in the streets!”The sluggard saith, There is a lion without; I shall be slain in the streets.게으른 사람은 말한다. "밖에 사자가 있다! 거리에서 죽임을 당하겠구나!"
14 The mouth of an adulteress is a deep pit. He who is under Yahweh’s wrath will fall into it.The mouth of strange women is a deep pit; He that is abhorred of Jehovah shall fall therein.음란한 여인의 입은 깊은 구덩이니, 여호와의 진노 아래 있는 사람이 그 안으로 빠진다.
15 Folly is bound up in the heart of a child; the rod of discipline drives it far from him.Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child; But the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.어리석음이 아이의 마음에 매여 있으나, 훈계의 매가 그것을 그에게서 멀리 쫓아낸다.
16 Whoever oppresses the poor for his own increase and whoever gives to the rich, both come to poverty.He that oppresseth the poor to increase his gain, And he that giveth to the rich, shall come only to want.자기 이익을 위해 가난한 사람을 억압하는 자와 부유한 사람에게 주는 자는 둘 다 가난에 이르게 된다.
17 Turn your ear, and listen to the words of the wise. Apply your heart to my teaching.Incline thine ear, and hear the words of the wise, And apply thy heart unto my knowledge.네 귀를 기울여 지혜로운 자들의 말을 들으며, 내 가르침에 네 마음을 두어라.
18 For it is a pleasant thing if you keep them within you, if all of them are ready on your lips.For it is a pleasant thing if thou keep them within thee, If they be established together upon thy lips.그 말씀들을 네 속에 간직하고 그것들이 모두 네 입술에 준비되어 있다면, 그것은 즐거운 일이다.
19 I teach you today, even you, so that your trust may be in Yahweh.That thy trust may be in Jehovah, I have made them known to thee this day, even to thee.네 신뢰가 여호와께 있도록, 오늘 내가 너를, 바로 너를 가르친다.
20 Haven’t I written to you thirty excellent things of counsel and knowledge,Have not I written unto thee excellent things Of counsels and knowledge,내가 너에게 모략과 지식에 관한 탁월한 것 서른 가지를 써 주지 않았느냐?
21 To teach you truth, reliable words, to give sound answers to the ones who sent you?To make thee know the certainty of the words of truth, That thou mayest carry back words of truth to them that send thee?진리의 말씀, 곧 믿을 만한 말씀을 너에게 알게 하여, 너를 보낸 이들에게 건전한 대답을 주게 하려 함이다.
22 Don’t exploit the poor because he is poor; and don’t crush the needy in court;Rob not the poor, because he is poor; Neither oppress the afflicted in the gate:가난한 사람이 가난하다고 해서 그를 착취하지 말고, 곤궁한 사람을 법정에서 짓밟지 말아라.
23 for Yahweh will plead their case, and plunder the life of those who plunder them.For Jehovah will plead their cause, And despoil of life those that despoil them.여호와께서 그들의 사정을 변호하시고, 그들을 약탈하는 자들의 생명을 약탈하실 것이기 때문이다.
24 Don’t befriend a hot-tempered man. Don’t associate with one who harbors anger,Make no friendship with a man that is given to anger; And with a wrathful man thou shalt not go:성을 잘 내는 사람과 벗하지 말고, 분노를 품은 사람과 어울리지 말아라.
25 lest you learn his ways and ensnare your soul.Lest thou learn his ways, And get a snare to thy soul.그의 행실을 배워 네 영혼이 올무에 걸리지 않게 하려 함이다.
26 Don’t you be one of those who strike hands, of those who are collateral for debts.Be thou not one of them that strike hands, Or of them that are sureties for debts.손을 잡아 약속하는 자, 곧 남의 빚에 보증을 서는 자가 되지 말아라.
27 If you don’t have means to pay, why should he take away your bed from under you?If thou hast not wherewith to pay, Why should he take away thy bed from under thee?네가 갚을 형편이 못 되면, 어찌하여 그가 네 잠자리를 네 밑에서 빼앗아 가게 하겠느냐?
28 Don’t move the ancient boundary stone which your fathers have set up.Remove not the ancient landmark, Which thy fathers have set.네 조상이 세워 놓은 옛 경계석을 옮기지 말아라.
29 Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will serve kings. He won’t serve obscure men.Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; He shall not stand before mean men.자기 일에 능숙한 사람을 보았느냐? 그는 왕들을 섬길 것이요, 비천한 사람들을 섬기지 않을 것이다.
