1 Better is a dry morsel with quietness, than a house full of feasting with strife.Better is a dry morsel, and quietness therewith, Than a house full of feasting with strife.다툼이 가득한 잔칫집보다, 마른 빵 한 조각이라도 평온함이 있는 편이 낫다.
2 A servant who deals wisely will rule over a son who causes shame, and shall have a part in the inheritance among the brothers.A servant that dealeth wisely shall have rule over a son that causeth shame, And shall have part in the inheritance among the brethren.슬기롭게 처신하는 종은 부끄러운 짓을 하는 아들을 다스리게 되고, 형제들 사이에서 유산도 함께 나누어 받을 것이다.
3 The refining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold, but Yahweh tests the hearts.The refining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold; But Jehovah trieth the hearts.도가니는 은을, 풀무는 금을 단련하지만, 사람의 마음을 단련하시는 분은 여호와시다.
4 An evildoer heeds wicked lips. A liar gives ear to a mischievous tongue.An evil-doer giveth heed to wicked lips; And a liar giveth ear to a mischievous tongue.악을 행하는 자는 악한 입술에 귀를 기울이고, 거짓말하는 자는 해치는 혀에 귀를 빌려준다.
5 Whoever mocks the poor reproaches his Maker. He who is glad at calamity shall not be unpunished.Whoso mocketh the poor reproacheth his Maker; And he that is glad at calamity shall not be unpunished.가난한 사람을 비웃는 자는 그를 지으신 분을 모욕하는 것이며, 남의 재앙을 기뻐하는 자는 벌을 면치 못할 것이다.
6 Children’s children are the crown of old men; the glory of children is their parents.Children’s children are the crown of old men; And the glory of children are their fathers.손주는 노인의 면류관이요, 자녀의 영광은 그들의 부모다.
7 Excellent speech isn’t fitting for a fool, much less do lying lips fit a prince.Excellent speech becometh not a fool; Much less do lying lips a prince.거만한 말이 어리석은 자에게 어울리지 않거든, 하물며 거짓된 입술이 고귀한 사람에게 어울리겠는가.
8 A bribe is a precious stone in the eyes of him who gives it; wherever he turns, he prospers.A bribe is as a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it; Whithersoever it turneth, it prospereth.뇌물은 그것을 주는 자의 눈에 보석처럼 여겨지니, 그가 어디로 향하든 일이 잘 풀린다.
9 He who covers an offense promotes love; but he who repeats a matter separates best friends.He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; But he that harpeth on a matter separateth chief friends.허물을 덮어 주는 사람은 사랑을 키우지만, 그 일을 거듭 들추어내는 자는 가까운 친구 사이를 갈라놓는다.
10 A rebuke enters deeper into one who has understanding than a hundred lashes into a fool.A rebuke entereth deeper into one that hath understanding Than a hundred stripes into a fool.한 번의 꾸짖음이 명철한 사람에게는, 어리석은 자에게 매를 백 대 치는 것보다 더 깊이 박힌다.
11 An evil man seeks only rebellion; therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him.An evil man seeketh only rebellion; Therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him.악한 사람은 오로지 반역만 꾀하니, 잔혹한 사자가 그를 치러 보내질 것이다.
12 Let a bear robbed of her cubs meet a man, rather than a fool in his folly.Let a bear robbed of her whelps meet a man, Rather than a fool in his folly.어리석은 자가 미련한 짓에 빠진 것을 만나느니, 차라리 새끼 빼앗긴 곰을 만나는 편이 낫다.
13 Whoever rewards evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house.Whoso rewardeth evil for good, Evil shall not depart from his house.선을 악으로 갚는 자는, 그 집에서 악이 떠나지 않을 것이다.
14 The beginning of strife is like breaching a dam, therefore stop contention before quarreling breaks out.The beginning of strife is as when one letteth out water: Therefore leave off contention, before there is quarrelling.다툼의 시작은 둑을 터뜨리는 것과 같으니, 싸움이 터지기 전에 다툼을 그쳐라.
15 He who justifies the wicked, and he who condemns the righteous, both of them alike are an abomination to Yahweh.He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the righteous, Both of them alike are an abomination to Jehovah.악인을 의롭다 하는 자와 의인을 정죄하는 자, 이 둘 다 여호와께서 똑같이 미워하시는 가증한 자들이다.
16 Why is there money in the hand of a fool to buy wisdom, since he has no understanding?Wherefore is there a price in the hand of a fool to buy wisdom, Seeing he hath no understanding?어리석은 자에게 지혜를 살 돈이 손에 있은들 무슨 소용인가, 그에게는 명철이 없는데.
17 A friend loves at all times; and a brother is born for adversity.A friend loveth at all times; And a brother is born for adversity.친구는 언제나 사랑하며, 형제는 어려운 때를 위해 태어난다.
18 A man void of understanding strikes hands, and becomes collateral in the presence of his neighbor.A man void of understanding striketh hands, And becometh surety in the presence of his neighbor.명철이 없는 사람은 선뜻 보증을 서고, 이웃 앞에서 남의 빚을 떠맡는다.
19 He who loves disobedience loves strife. One who builds a high gate seeks destruction.He loveth transgression that loveth strife: He that raiseth high his gate seeketh destruction.다툼을 좋아하는 자는 불순종을 좋아하는 것이며, 자기 문을 높이 세우는 자는 멸망을 자초한다.
20 One who has a perverse heart doesn’t find prosperity, and one who has a deceitful tongue falls into trouble.He that hath a wayward heart findeth no good; And he that hath a perverse tongue falleth into mischief.마음이 비뚤어진 자는 형통하지 못하고, 혀가 속이는 자는 환난에 빠진다.
21 He who becomes the father of a fool grieves. The father of a fool has no joy.He that begetteth a fool doeth it to his sorrow; And the father of a fool hath no joy.어리석은 자식의 아비가 되는 자는 근심하니, 미련한 자의 아비에게는 기쁨이 없다.
22 A cheerful heart makes good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.A cheerful heart is a good medicine; But a broken spirit drieth up the bones.즐거운 마음은 좋은 약이 되지만, 짓눌린 영은 뼈를 마르게 한다.
23 A wicked man receives a bribe in secret, to pervert the ways of justice.A wicked man receiveth a bribe out of the bosom, To pervert the ways of justice.악한 사람은 정의의 길을 굽게 하려고 몰래 뇌물을 받는다.
24 Wisdom is before the face of one who has understanding, but the eyes of a fool wander to the ends of the earth.Wisdom is before the face of him that hath understanding; But the eyes of a fool are in the ends of the earth.명철한 사람의 눈앞에는 지혜가 있으나, 어리석은 자의 눈은 땅끝까지 헤맨다.
25 A foolish son brings grief to his father, and bitterness to her who bore him.A foolish son is a grief to his father, And bitterness to her that bare him.미련한 아들은 그 아버지에게 근심이 되고, 그를 낳은 어머니에게 쓰라림이 된다.
26 Also to punish the righteous is not good, nor to flog officials for their integrity.Also to punish the righteous is not good, Nor to smite the noble for their uprightness.의인을 벌하는 것도 옳지 않거니와, 고결한 사람을 그 정직함 때문에 매질하는 것도 옳지 않다.
27 He who spares his words has knowledge. He who is even tempered is a man of understanding.He that spareth his words hath knowledge; And he that is of a cool spirit is a man of understanding.말을 아끼는 사람은 지식이 있고, 성품이 차분한 사람은 명철한 사람이다.
28 Even a fool, when he keeps silent, is counted wise. When he shuts his lips, he is thought to be discerning.Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise; When he shutteth his lips, he is esteemed as prudent.어리석은 자라도 잠잠하면 지혜로운 자로 여겨지고, 입술을 다물면 슬기로운 자로 인정받는다.
