1 A wise son listens to his father’s instruction, but a scoffer doesn’t listen to rebuke.A wise son heareth his father’s instruction; But a scoffer heareth not rebuke.지혜로운 아들은 아버지의 훈계에 귀를 기울이지만, 거만한 사람은 꾸짖음을 들으려 하지 않는다.
2 By the fruit of his lips, a man enjoys good things, but the unfaithful crave violence.A man shall eat good by the fruit of his mouth; But the soul of the treacherous shall eat violence.사람은 자기 입술의 열매로 좋은 것을 누리지만, 신실하지 못한 사람은 폭력을 탐낸다.
3 He who guards his mouth guards his soul. One who opens wide his lips comes to ruin.He that guardeth his mouth keepeth his life; But he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction.자기 입을 지키는 사람은 자기 생명을 지키지만, 함부로 입술을 벌리는 사람은 멸망에 이른다.
4 The soul of the sluggard desires, and has nothing, but the desire of the diligent shall be fully satisfied.The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing; But the soul of the diligent shall be made fat.게으른 사람은 마음으로 바라기만 할 뿐 아무것도 얻지 못하지만, 부지런한 사람의 소원은 풍족하게 채워진다.
5 A righteous man hates lies, but a wicked man brings shame and disgrace.A righteous man hateth lying; But a wicked man is loathsome, and cometh to shame.의로운 사람은 거짓을 미워하지만, 악한 사람은 부끄러움과 수치를 불러온다.
6 Righteousness guards the way of integrity, but wickedness overthrows the sinner.Righteousness guardeth him that is upright in the way; But wickedness overthroweth the sinner.의는 흠 없이 사는 사람의 길을 지켜 주지만, 악은 죄인을 무너뜨린다.
7 There are some who pretend to be rich, yet have nothing. There are some who pretend to be poor, yet have great wealth.There is that maketh himself rich, yet hath nothing: There is that maketh himself poor, yet hath great wealth.부유한 척하지만 아무것도 없는 사람이 있고, 가난한 척하지만 큰 재물을 지닌 사람이 있다.
8 The ransom of a man’s life is his riches, but the poor hear no threats.The ransom of a man’s life is his riches; But the poor heareth no threatening.사람의 재물은 자기 목숨을 구할 몸값이 되지만, 가난한 사람은 위협하는 소리조차 듣지 않는다.
9 The light of the righteous shines brightly, but the lamp of the wicked is snuffed out.The light of the righteous rejoiceth; But the lamp of the wicked shall be put out.의로운 사람의 빛은 환하게 빛나지만, 악한 사람의 등불은 꺼지고 만다.
10 Pride only breeds quarrels, but wisdom is with people who take advice.By pride cometh only contention; But with the well-advised is wisdom.교만은 다툼만 일으키지만, 충고를 받아들이는 사람에게는 지혜가 있다.
11 Wealth gained dishonestly dwindles away, but he who gathers by hand makes it grow.Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished; But he that gathereth by labor shall have increase.부정하게 얻은 재물은 점점 줄어들지만, 손수 모으는 사람은 그것을 늘려 간다.
12 Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but when longing is fulfilled, it is a tree of life.Hope deferred maketh the heart sick; But when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life.바라던 일이 자꾸 미뤄지면 마음이 병들지만, 소원이 이루어지면 그것은 생명나무와 같다.
13 Whoever despises instruction will pay for it, but he who respects a command will be rewarded.Whoso despiseth the word bringeth destruction on himself; But he that feareth the commandment shall be rewarded.훈계를 업신여기는 사람은 그 대가를 치르지만, 계명을 존중하는 사람은 상을 받는다.
14 The teaching of the wise is a spring of life, to turn from the snares of death.The law of the wise is a fountain of life, That one may depart from the snares of death.지혜로운 사람의 가르침은 생명의 샘이 되어, 죽음의 올무에서 벗어나게 한다.
15 Good understanding wins favor, but the way of the unfaithful is hard.Good understanding giveth favor; But the way of the transgressor is hard.좋은 분별력은 은총을 얻게 하지만, 신실하지 못한 사람의 길은 험난하다.
16 Every prudent man acts from knowledge, but a fool exposes folly.Every prudent man worketh with knowledge; But a fool flaunteth his folly.슬기로운 사람은 무엇이든 지식을 따라 행하지만, 어리석은 사람은 자기 어리석음을 드러낸다.
17 A wicked messenger falls into trouble, but a trustworthy envoy gains healing.A wicked messenger falleth into evil; But a faithful ambassador is health.악한 심부름꾼은 환난에 빠지지만, 믿을 만한 사신은 치유를 가져온다.
18 Poverty and shame come to him who refuses discipline, but he who heeds correction shall be honored.Poverty and shame shall be to him that refuseth correction; But he that regardeth reproof shall be honored.훈계를 마다하는 사람에게는 가난과 수치가 닥치지만, 책망을 귀담아듣는 사람은 존경을 받는다.
19 Longing fulfilled is sweet to the soul, but fools detest turning from evil.The desire accomplished is sweet to the soul; But it is an abomination to fools to depart from evil.소원이 이루어지면 마음에 달콤하지만, 어리석은 사람은 악에서 돌이키는 것을 싫어한다.
20 One who walks with wise men grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm.Walk with wise men, and thou shalt be wise; But the companion of fools shall smart for it.지혜로운 사람과 함께 걷는 사람은 지혜로워지지만, 어리석은 사람과 어울리는 사람은 해를 입는다.
21 Misfortune pursues sinners, but prosperity rewards the righteous.Evil pursueth sinners; But the righteous shall be recompensed with good.재앙은 죄인을 뒤쫓지만, 형통함은 의로운 사람에게 갚아진다.
22 A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children, but the wealth of the sinner is stored for the righteous.A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children’s children; And the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the righteous.선한 사람은 자손의 자손에게 유산을 남기지만, 죄인의 재물은 의로운 사람을 위하여 쌓인다.
23 An abundance of food is in poor people’s fields, but injustice sweeps it away.Much food is in the tillage of the poor; But there is that is destroyed by reason of injustice.가난한 사람의 밭에는 먹을 것이 풍성하지만, 불의가 그것을 쓸어 가 버린다.
24 One who spares the rod hates his son, but one who loves him is careful to discipline him.He that spareth his rod hateth his son; But he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.매를 아끼는 사람은 자기 아들을 미워하는 것이지만, 아들을 사랑하는 사람은 부지런히 훈계한다.
25 The righteous one eats to the satisfying of his soul, but the belly of the wicked goes hungry.The righteous eateth to the satisfying of his soul; But the belly of the wicked shall want.의로운 사람은 배불리 먹어 마음이 흡족하지만, 악한 사람의 배는 늘 주린다.
