1 A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.A soft answer turneth away wrath; But a grievous word stirreth up anger.부드러운 대답은 분노를 가라앉히지만, 거친 말은 화를 돋운다.
2 The tongue of the wise commends knowledge, but the mouths of fools gush out folly.The tongue of the wise uttereth knowledge aright; But the mouth of fools poureth out folly.지혜로운 사람의 혀는 지식을 잘 전하지만, 어리석은 사람의 입은 미련함을 쏟아 낸다.
3 Yahweh’s eyes are everywhere, keeping watch on the evil and the good.The eyes of Jehovah are in every place, Keeping watch upon the evil and the good.여호와의 눈은 어디에나 있어, 악한 자와 선한 자를 모두 지켜보신다.
4 A gentle tongue is a tree of life, but deceit in it crushes the spirit.A gentle tongue is a tree of life; But perverseness therein is a breaking of the spirit.부드러운 혀는 생명의 나무이지만, 거기에 담긴 속임수는 마음을 무너뜨린다.
5 A fool despises his father’s correction, but he who heeds reproof shows prudence.A fool despiseth his father’s correction; But he that regardeth reproof getteth prudence.어리석은 사람은 아버지의 훈계를 업신여기지만, 책망을 받아들이는 사람은 슬기를 얻는다.
6 In the house of the righteous is much treasure, but the income of the wicked brings trouble.In the house of the righteous is much treasure; But in the revenues of the wicked is trouble.의인의 집에는 많은 재물이 있지만, 악인의 소득은 괴로움을 가져온다.
7 The lips of the wise spread knowledge; not so with the heart of fools.The lips of the wise disperse knowledge; But the heart of the foolish doeth not so.지혜로운 사람의 입술은 지식을 널리 펴지만, 어리석은 사람의 마음은 그렇지 못하다.
8 The sacrifice made by the wicked is an abomination to Yahweh, but the prayer of the upright is his delight.The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to Jehovah; But the prayer of the upright is his delight.악인이 드리는 제사는 여호와께서 미워하시지만, 정직한 사람의 기도는 그분이 기뻐하신다.
9 The way of the wicked is an abomination to Yahweh, but he loves him who follows after righteousness.The way of the wicked is an abomination to Jehovah; But he loveth him that followeth after righteousness.악인의 길은 여호와께서 미워하시지만, 의를 따라 사는 사람은 그분이 사랑하신다.
10 There is stern discipline for one who forsakes the way. Whoever hates reproof shall die.There is grievous correction for him that forsaketh the way; And he that hateth reproof shall die.바른 길을 버리는 자에게는 엄한 징계가 따르고, 책망을 미워하는 자는 죽게 된다.
11 Sheol and Abaddon are before Yahweh — how much more then the hearts of the children of men!Sheol and Abaddon are before Jehovah; How much more then the hearts of the children of men!스올과 아바돈도 여호와 앞에 드러나는데, 하물며 사람의 마음이야 어떠하겠는가!
12 A scoffer doesn’t love to be reproved; he will not go to the wise.A scoffer loveth not to be reproved; He will not go unto the wise.거만한 사람은 책망받기를 싫어하여, 지혜로운 사람에게 가지 않는다.
13 A glad heart makes a cheerful face, but an aching heart breaks the spirit.A glad heart maketh a cheerful countenance; But by sorrow of heart the spirit is broken.마음이 즐거우면 얼굴이 환해지지만, 마음이 아프면 영이 상한다.
14 The heart of one who has understanding seeks knowledge, but the mouths of fools feed on folly.The heart of him that hath understanding seeketh knowledge; But the mouth of fools feedeth on folly.명철한 사람의 마음은 지식을 구하지만, 어리석은 사람의 입은 미련함을 먹고 산다.
15 All the days of the afflicted are wretched, but one who has a cheerful heart enjoys a continual feast.All the days of the afflicted are evil; But he that is of a cheerful heart hath a continual feast.고난받는 사람의 날은 모두 괴롭지만, 마음이 즐거운 사람은 늘 잔치를 누린다.
16 Better is little, with the fear of Yahweh, than great treasure with trouble.Better is little, with the fear of Jehovah, Than great treasure and trouble therewith.적게 가졌어도 여호와를 경외하는 것이, 많은 재물을 가지고 괴로워하는 것보다 낫다.
17 Better is a dinner of herbs, where love is, than a fattened calf with hatred.Better is a dinner of herbs, where love is, Than a stalled ox and hatred therewith.사랑이 있는 곳에서 나물을 먹는 것이, 미움이 있는 곳에서 살진 송아지를 먹는 것보다 낫다.
18 A wrathful man stirs up contention, but one who is slow to anger appeases strife.A wrathful man stirreth up contention; But he that is slow to anger appeaseth strife.화를 잘 내는 사람은 다툼을 일으키지만, 노하기를 더디 하는 사람은 싸움을 가라앉힌다.
19 The way of the sluggard is like a thorn patch, but the path of the upright is a highway.The way of the sluggard is as a hedge of thorns; But the path of the upright is made a highway.게으른 사람의 길은 가시밭 같지만, 정직한 사람의 길은 평탄한 큰길이다.
20 A wise son makes a father glad, but a foolish man despises his mother.A wise son maketh a glad father; But a foolish man despiseth his mother.지혜로운 아들은 아버지를 기쁘게 하지만, 어리석은 사람은 어머니를 업신여긴다.
21 Folly is joy to one who is void of wisdom, but a man of understanding keeps his way straight.Folly is joy to him that is void of wisdom; But a man of understanding maketh straight his going.지혜가 없는 사람은 미련함을 즐기지만, 명철한 사람은 자기 길을 바르게 간다.
22 Where there is no counsel, plans fail; but in a multitude of counselors they are established.Where there is no counsel, purposes are disappointed; But in the multitude of counsellors they are established.의논이 없으면 계획이 무너지지만, 조언자가 많으면 계획이 굳게 선다.
23 Joy comes to a man with the reply of his mouth. How good is a word at the right time!A man hath joy in the answer of his mouth; And a word in due season, how good is it!사람은 알맞은 대답으로 기쁨을 얻으니, 때에 맞는 말이 얼마나 좋은가!
24 The path of life leads upward for the wise, to keep him from going downward to Sheol.To the wise the way of life goeth upward, That he may depart from Sheol beneath.지혜로운 사람에게는 생명의 길이 위로 향하니, 그것은 그를 아래 스올로 내려가지 않게 한다.
25 Yahweh will uproot the house of the proud, but he will keep the widow’s borders intact.Jehovah will root up the house of the proud; But he will establish the border of the widow.여호와께서는 교만한 자의 집을 뽑으시지만, 과부의 경계는 굳게 지켜 주신다.
26 Yahweh detests the thoughts of the wicked, but the thoughts of the pure are pleasing.Evil devices are an abomination to Jehovah; But pleasant words are pure.여호와께서는 악인의 생각을 미워하시지만, 정결한 사람의 생각은 기쁘게 여기신다.
27 He who is greedy for gain troubles his own house, but he who hates bribes will live.He that is greedy of gain troubleth his own house; But he that hateth bribes shall live.욕심으로 이익을 탐하는 사람은 자기 집안에 괴로움을 끼치지만, 뇌물을 미워하는 사람은 살게 된다.
28 The heart of the righteous weighs answers, but the mouth of the wicked gushes out evil.The heart of the righteous studieth to answer; But the mouth of the wicked poureth out evil things.의인의 마음은 어떻게 대답할지 깊이 헤아리지만, 악인의 입은 악한 것을 쏟아 낸다.
29 Yahweh is far from the wicked, but he hears the prayer of the righteous.Jehovah is far from the wicked; But he heareth the prayer of the righteous.여호와께서는 악인을 멀리하시지만, 의인의 기도는 들어 주신다.
30 The light of the eyes rejoices the heart. Good news gives health to the bones.The light of the eyes rejoiceth the heart; And good tidings make the bones fat.눈이 밝으면 마음이 기뻐지고, 좋은 소식은 뼈를 튼튼하게 한다.
31 The ear that listens to reproof lives, and will be at home among the wise.The ear that hearkeneth to the reproof of life Shall abide among the wise.생명을 주는 책망에 귀를 기울이는 사람은 지혜로운 사람들 가운데 머문다.
32 He who refuses correction despises his own soul, but he who listens to reproof gets understanding.He that refuseth correction despiseth his own soul; But he that hearkeneth to reproof getteth understanding.훈계를 저버리는 사람은 자기 영혼을 업신여기지만, 책망을 듣는 사람은 명철을 얻는다.
33 The fear of Yahweh teaches wisdom. Before honor is humility.The fear of Jehovah is the instruction of wisdom; And before honor goeth humility.여호와를 경외하는 것이 지혜의 가르침이니, 영광에 앞서 겸손이 있다.
