1 These also are proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied out.These also are proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied out.이것도 솔로몬의 잠언이니, 유다 왕 히스기야의 신하들이 베껴 모은 것이다.

2 It is the glory of God to conceal a thing, but the glory of kings is to search out a matter.It is the glory of God to conceal a thing; But the glory of kings is to search out a matter.일을 숨기는 것은 하나님의 영광이요, 일을 살펴 밝히는 것은 왕의 영광이다.

3 As the heavens for height, and the earth for depth, so the hearts of kings are unsearchable.As the heavens for height, and the earth for depth, So the heart of kings is unsearchable.하늘은 높아서, 땅은 깊어서 헤아릴 수 없듯이, 왕의 마음도 헤아릴 수 없다.

4 Take away the dross from the silver, and material comes out for the refiner.Take away the dross from the silver, And there cometh forth a vessel for the refiner:은에서 찌꺼기를 제거하라. 그러면 세공인의 그릇 재료가 나온다.

5 Take away the wicked from the king’s presence, and his throne will be established in righteousness.Take away the wicked from before the king, And his throne shall be established in righteousness.왕 앞에서 악한 사람을 제거하라. 그러면 그의 보좌가 의로 굳게 선다.

6 Don’t exalt yourself in the presence of the king, or claim a place among great men;Put not thyself forward in the presence of the king, And stand not in the place of great men:왕 앞에서 스스로 높이지 말고, 큰 사람들의 자리를 차지하려 하지 마라.

7 for it is better that it be said to you, “ Come up here,” than that you should be put lower in the presence of the prince, whom your eyes have seen.For better is it that it be said unto thee, Come up hither, Than that thou shouldest be put lower in the presence of the prince, Whom thine eyes have seen.네 눈으로 본 그 귀인 앞에서 낮은 자리로 밀려나는 것보다, "이리 올라오라"는 말을 듣는 것이 더 낫기 때문이다.

8 Don’t be hasty in bringing charges to court. What will you do in the end when your neighbor shames you?Go not forth hastily to strive, Lest thou know not what to do in the end thereof, When thy neighbor hath put thee to shame.서둘러 소송을 일으키지 마라. 마침내 네 이웃이 너를 부끄럽게 할 때에 너는 어찌하겠느냐?

9 Debate your case with your neighbor, and don’t betray the confidence of another,Debate thy cause with thy neighbor himself, And disclose not the secret of another;네 이웃과 다툴 일이 있거든 그와 직접 따지고, 다른 사람의 비밀은 누설하지 마라.

10 lest one who hears it put you to shame, and your bad reputation never depart.Lest he that heareth it revile thee, And thine infamy turn not away.그것을 들은 사람이 너를 욕되게 하고, 네 나쁜 평판이 영영 떠나지 않을까 두렵기 때문이다.

11 A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver.A word fitly spoken Is like apples of gold in network of silver.알맞게 한 말은 은쟁반에 놓인 금사과와 같다.

12 As an earring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, so is a wise reprover to an obedient ear.As an ear-ring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, So is a wise reprover upon an obedient ear.지혜로운 사람의 책망은 순종하는 귀에게 금귀고리요 정금 장식과 같다.

13 As the cold of snow in the time of harvest, so is a faithful messenger to those who send him; for he refreshes the soul of his masters.As the cold of snow in the time of harvest, So is a faithful messenger to them that send him; For he refresheth the soul of his masters.신실한 심부름꾼은 그를 보낸 사람들에게 추수 때의 눈처럼 시원하니, 그가 주인들의 마음을 시원하게 하기 때문이다.

14 As clouds and wind without rain, so is he who boasts of gifts deceptively.As clouds and wind without rain, So is he that boasteth himself of his gifts falsely.선물을 주겠다고 속이며 자랑하는 사람은 비 없는 구름과 바람 같다.

15 By patience a ruler is persuaded. A soft tongue breaks the bone.By long forbearing is a ruler persuaded, And a soft tongue breaketh the bone.오래 참으면 통치자도 설득되고, 부드러운 혀는 뼈도 꺾는다.

16 Have you found honey? Eat as much as is sufficient for you, lest you eat too much, and vomit it.Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee, Lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it.꿀을 찾았느냐? 알맞을 만큼만 먹어라. 너무 많이 먹어 토하지 않게 하라.

17 Let your foot be seldom in your neighbor’s house, lest he be weary of you, and hate you.Let thy foot be seldom in thy neighbor’s house, Lest he be weary of thee, and hate thee.네 이웃의 집에 자주 드나들지 마라. 그가 너를 싫어하여 미워할까 두렵다.

18 A man who gives false testimony against his neighbor is like a club, a sword, or a sharp arrow.A man that beareth false witness against his neighbor Is a maul, and a sword, and a sharp arrow.이웃을 거슬러 거짓 증언을 하는 사람은 방망이요 칼이요 날카로운 화살과 같다.

19 Confidence in someone unfaithful in time of trouble is like a bad tooth or a lame foot.Confidence in an unfaithful man in time of trouble Is like a broken tooth, and a foot out of joint.환난 때에 신실하지 못한 사람을 의지하는 것은 썩은 이나 저는 발을 의지하는 것과 같다.

20 As one who takes away a garment in cold weather, or vinegar on soda, so is one who sings songs to a heavy heart.As one that taketh off a garment in cold weather, and as vinegar upon soda, So is he that singeth songs to a heavy heart.마음이 무거운 사람에게 노래를 불러 주는 것은 추운 날에 옷을 벗기는 것 같고, 소다에 식초를 붓는 것 같다.

21 If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat. If he is thirsty, give him water to drink;If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; And if he be thirsty, give him water to drink:네 원수가 굶주리거든 먹을 것을 주고, 목말라하거든 마실 물을 주어라.

22 for you will heap coals of fire on his head, and Yahweh will reward you.For thou wilt heap coals of fire upon his head, And Jehovah will reward thee.그리하면 네가 그의 머리에 숯불을 쌓아 놓는 것이며, 여호와께서 네게 갚아 주실 것이다.

23 The north wind produces rain; so a backbiting tongue brings an angry face.The north wind bringeth forth rain; So doth a backbiting tongue an angry countenance.북풍이 비를 몰고 오듯이, 험담하는 혀는 성난 얼굴을 불러온다.

24 It is better to dwell in the corner of the housetop than to share a house with a contentious woman.It is better to dwell in the corner of the housetop, Than with a contentious woman in a wide house.다투기 좋아하는 아내와 한집에 사는 것보다, 지붕 한구석에서 사는 것이 더 낫다.

25 Like cold water to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country.As cold waters to a thirsty soul, So is good news from a far country.먼 나라에서 온 좋은 소식은 목마른 사람에게 시원한 물과 같다.

26 Like a muddied spring and a polluted well, so is a righteous man who gives way before the wicked.As a troubled fountain, and a corrupted spring, So is a righteous man that giveth way before the wicked.악인 앞에서 굴복하는 의인은 흐려진 샘이나 더러워진 우물과 같다.

27 It is not good to eat much honey, nor is it honorable to seek one’s own honor.It is not good to eat much honey; So for men to search out their own glory is grievous.꿀을 많이 먹는 것이 좋지 않듯이, 자기 영광을 구하는 것도 영예롭지 못하다.

28 Like a city that is broken down and without walls is a man whose spirit is without restraint.He whose spirit is without restraint Is like a city that is broken down and without walls.자기 마음을 다스리지 못하는 사람은 무너져 성벽 없는 성과 같다.
