1 When you sit to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before you;When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, Consider diligently him that is before thee;네가 통치자와 함께 앉아 음식을 먹게 되거든, 네 앞에 무엇이 있는지를 깊이 살펴라.
2 put a knife to your throat if you are a man given to appetite.And put a knife to thy throat, If thou be a man given to appetite.네가 식욕에 사로잡히는 사람이라면, 네 목에 칼을 대듯이 절제하여라.
3 Don’t be desirous of his dainties, since they are deceitful food.Be not desirous of his dainties; Seeing they are deceitful food.그의 진미를 탐내지 마라. 그것은 속이는 음식이기 때문이다.
4 Don’t weary yourself to be rich. In your wisdom, show restraint.Weary not thyself to be rich; Cease from thine own wisdom.부자가 되려고 너 자신을 지치게 하지 마라. 네 지혜로 자제할 줄 알아라.
5 Why do you set your eyes on that which is not? For it certainly sprouts wings like an eagle and flies in the sky.Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? For riches certainly make themselves wings, Like an eagle that flieth toward heaven.어찌하여 너는 사라질 것에 눈을 두느냐? 재물은 틀림없이 독수리처럼 날개가 돋아 하늘로 날아가 버린다.
6 Don’t eat the food of him who has a stingy eye, and don’t crave his delicacies,Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, Neither desire thou his dainties:인색한 자의 음식을 먹지 말고, 그의 진미를 탐내지 마라.
7 for as he thinks about the cost, so he is. “Eat and drink!” he says to you, but his heart is not with you.For as he thinketh within himself, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; But his heart is not with thee.그는 속으로 그 값을 따지는 사람이라, 겉으로는 "드시고 마시오!" 하고 네게 말하지만, 그 마음은 너와 함께 있지 않다.
8 You will vomit up the morsel which you have eaten and waste your pleasant words.The morsel which thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, And lose thy sweet words.네가 먹은 그 한 입을 도로 토하게 될 것이요, 네가 했던 좋은 말도 다 헛것이 되리라.
9 Don’t speak in the ears of a fool, for he will despise the wisdom of your words.Speak not in the hearing of a fool; For he will despise the wisdom of thy words.어리석은 자의 귀에 대고 말하지 마라. 그는 네 지혜로운 말을 업신여길 것이기 때문이다.
10 Don’t move the ancient boundary stone. Don’t encroach on the fields of the fatherless,Remove not the ancient landmark; And enter not into the fields of the fatherless:옛 경계석을 옮기지 말고, 아버지 없는 자들의 밭을 침범하지 마라.
11 for their Defender is strong. He will plead their case against you.For their Redeemer is strong; He will plead their cause against thee.그들의 보호자는 강하시니, 그분이 너를 상대로 그들의 송사를 맡아 변호하실 것이다.
12 Apply your heart to instruction, and your ears to the words of knowledge.Apply thy heart unto instruction, And thine ears to the words of knowledge.네 마음을 훈계에 쏟고, 네 귀를 지식의 말씀에 기울여라.
13 Don’t withhold correction from a child. If you punish him with the rod, he will not die.Withhold not correction from the child; For if thou beat him with the rod, he will not die.아이를 훈계하기를 그치지 마라. 네가 매로 그를 징계해도 그가 죽지는 않는다.
14 Punish him with the rod, and save his soul from Sheol.Thou shalt beat him with the rod, And shalt deliver his soul from Sheol.너는 매로 그를 징계하여, 그의 영혼을 스올에서 건져 내어라.
15 My son, if your heart is wise, then my heart will be glad, even mine.My son, if thy heart be wise, My heart will be glad, even mine:내 아들아, 네 마음이 지혜로우면, 바로 내 마음이 기뻐할 것이다.
16 Yes, my heart will rejoice when your lips speak what is right.Yea, my heart will rejoice, When thy lips speak right things.그렇다, 네 입술이 옳은 것을 말할 때에, 내 속이 즐거워하리라.
17 Don’t let your heart envy sinners, but rather fear Yahweh all day long.Let not thy heart envy sinners; But be thou in the fear of Jehovah all the day long:네 마음이 죄인들을 부러워하지 않게 하고, 오히려 온종일 여호와를 경외하여라.
18 Indeed surely there is a future hope, and your hope will not be cut off.For surely there is a reward; And thy hope shall not be cut off.정녕 장래의 소망이 있으니, 네 소망이 끊어지지 않으리라.
19 Listen, my son, and be wise, and keep your heart on the right path!Hear thou, my son, and be wise, And guide thy heart in the way.내 아들아, 들어라. 지혜로워져서, 네 마음을 바른 길로 향하게 하여라.
20 Don’t be among ones drinking too much wine, or those who gorge themselves on meat;Be not among winebibbers, Among gluttonous eaters of flesh:술을 지나치게 마시는 자들이나, 고기를 탐하여 마구 먹는 자들 가운데 끼지 마라.
21 for the drunkard and the glutton shall become poor; and drowsiness clothes them in rags.For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty; And drowsiness will clothe a man with rags.술 취한 자와 먹기를 탐하는 자는 가난해지고, 게으른 잠은 사람에게 누더기를 입히기 때문이다.
22 Listen to your father who gave you life, and don’t despise your mother when she is old.Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, And despise not thy mother when she is old.너를 낳아 준 네 아버지의 말을 듣고, 네 어머니가 늙었을 때에 그를 업신여기지 마라.
23 Buy the truth, and don’t sell it. Get wisdom, discipline, and understanding.Buy the truth, and sell it not; Yea, wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.진리를 사고 팔지 마라. 지혜와 훈계와 명철을 얻어라.
24 The father of the righteous has great joy. Whoever fathers a wise child delights in him.The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice; And he that begetteth a wise child will have joy of him.의인의 아버지는 큰 기쁨을 누리고, 지혜로운 자식을 둔 이는 그로 인해 즐거워한다.
25 Let your father and your mother be glad! Let her who bore you rejoice!Let thy father and thy mother be glad, And let her that bare thee rejoice.네 아버지와 네 어머니를 기쁘게 하고, 너를 낳은 그 어머니를 즐겁게 하여라.
26 My son, give me your heart; and let your eyes keep in my ways.My son, give me thy heart; And let thine eyes delight in my ways.내 아들아, 네 마음을 내게 주고, 네 눈이 내 길을 지키게 하여라.
27 For a prostitute is a deep pit; and a wayward wife is a narrow well.For a harlot is a deep ditch; And a foreign woman is a narrow pit.창녀는 깊은 구덩이요, 음란한 여인은 좁은 우물이기 때문이다.
28 Yes, she lies in wait like a robber, and increases the unfaithful among men.Yea, she lieth in wait as a robber, And increaseth the treacherous among men.그렇다, 그 여인은 강도처럼 숨어 기다리며, 사람들 가운데 신실하지 못한 자들을 늘어나게 한다.
29 Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaints? Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes?Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? Who hath complaining? who hath wounds without cause? Who hath redness of eyes?누구에게 화가 있느냐? 누구에게 슬픔이 있느냐? 누구에게 다툼이 있느냐? 누구에게 원망이 있느냐? 누구에게 까닭 없는 상처가 있느냐? 누구에게 충혈된 눈이 있느냐?
30 Those who stay long at the wine; those who go to seek out mixed wine.They that tarry long at the wine; They that go to seek out mixed wine.바로 술자리에 오래 머무는 자들, 혼합한 술을 찾아다니는 자들이다.
31 Don’t look at the wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup, when it goes down smoothly.Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, When it sparkleth in the cup, When it goeth down smoothly:포도주가 붉고 잔 속에서 반짝이며 부드럽게 넘어갈 때에, 그것을 쳐다보지 마라.
32 In the end, it bites like a snake, and poisons like a viper.At the last it biteth like a serpent, And stingeth like an adder.그것이 끝내는 뱀같이 물고, 독사같이 쏜다.
33 Your eyes will see strange things, and your mind will imagine confusing things.Thine eyes shall behold strange things, And thy heart shall utter perverse things.네 눈은 이상한 것들을 보게 되고, 네 마음은 혼란한 것들을 상상하게 되리라.
34 Yes, you will be as he who lies down in the middle of the sea, or as he who lies on top of the rigging:Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, Or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast.그렇다, 너는 바다 한가운데 누운 자같이 되고, 돛대 꼭대기에 누운 자같이 되리라.
35 “ They hit me, and I was not hurt! They beat me, and I don’t feel it! When will I wake up? I can do it again. I will look for more.”They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not hurt; They have beaten me, and I felt it not: When shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.너는 말하리라. "그들이 나를 때렸어도 나는 아프지 않았고, 나를 쳤어도 나는 느끼지 못했다. 언제나 깨어날까? 나는 또 그것을 찾아야겠다."
