1 Wine is a mocker and beer is a brawler. Whoever is led astray by them is not wise.Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler; And whosoever erreth thereby is not wise.포도주는 사람을 비웃게 만들고 독한 술은 사람을 다투게 한다. 술에 빠져 흔들리는 사람은 지혜롭지 못하다.
2 The terror of a king is like the roaring of a lion. He who provokes him to anger forfeits his own life.The terror of a king is as the roaring of a lion: He that provoketh him to anger sinneth against his own life.왕의 진노는 사자가 울부짖는 것과 같으니, 왕을 노하게 하는 사람은 자기 목숨을 잃는다.
3 It is an honor for a man to keep aloof from strife, but every fool will be quarreling.It is an honor for a man to keep aloof from strife; But every fool will be quarrelling.다툼에서 멀리 떨어져 있는 것이 사람에게 영예이지만, 어리석은 사람은 누구나 시비를 건다.
4 The sluggard will not plow by reason of the winter; therefore he shall beg in harvest, and have nothing.The sluggard will not plow by reason of the winter; Therefore he shall beg in harvest, and have nothing.게으른 사람은 겨울이라는 핑계로 밭을 갈지 않으니, 추수 때가 되면 구걸해도 얻을 것이 없다.
5 Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water, but a man of understanding will draw it out.Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water; But a man of understanding will draw it out.사람의 마음속 계획은 깊은 물과 같지만, 명철한 사람은 그것을 길어 올린다.
6 Many men claim to be men of unfailing love, but who can find a faithful man?Most men will proclaim every one his own kindness; But a faithful man who can find?많은 사람이 변함없는 사랑을 지녔다고 말하지만, 신실한 사람을 어디서 찾을 수 있겠는가?
7 A righteous man walks in integrity. Blessed are his children after him.A righteous man that walketh in his integrity, Blessed are his children after him.의로운 사람은 흠 없이 행하니, 그의 뒤를 잇는 자녀들이 복을 받는다.
8 A king who sits on the throne of judgment scatters away all evil with his eyes.A king that sitteth on the throne of judgment Scattereth away all evil with his eyes.심판의 보좌에 앉은 왕은 그 눈으로 모든 악을 흩어 버린다.
9 Who can say, “ I have made my heart pure. I am clean and without sin”?Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?누가 "나는 내 마음을 깨끗하게 했다, 나는 깨끗하여 죄가 없다"고 말할 수 있겠는가?
10 Differing weights and differing measures, both of them alike are an abomination to Yahweh.Diverse weights, and diverse measures, Both of them alike are an abomination to Jehovah.서로 다른 저울추와 서로 다른 되, 이 둘은 다 같이 여호와께서 가증히 여기시는 것이다.
11 Even a child makes himself known by his doings, whether his work is pure, and whether it is right.Even a child maketh himself known by his doings, Whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.아이라도 그 행동으로 자기를 드러내니, 그가 하는 일이 순수한지 옳은지가 나타난다.
12 The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, Yahweh has made even both of them.The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, Jehovah hath made even both of them.듣는 귀와 보는 눈, 이 둘을 다 여호와께서 지으셨다.
13 Don’t love sleep, lest you come to poverty. Open your eyes, and you shall be satisfied with bread.Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; Open thine eyes, and thou shalt be satisfied with bread.잠을 사랑하지 마라, 그러면 가난해진다. 네 눈을 뜨라, 그러면 양식으로 배부르게 될 것이다.
14 “ It’s no good, it’s no good,” says the buyer; but when he is gone his way, then he boasts.It is bad, it is bad, saith the buyer; But when he is gone his way, then he boasteth.사는 사람은 "좋지 않다, 좋지 않다" 하고 말하지만, 돌아서서 자기 길을 가면 그것을 자랑한다.
15 There is gold and abundance of rubies, but the lips of knowledge are a rare jewel.There is gold, and abundance of rubies; But the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.금도 있고 많은 루비도 있지만, 지식을 말하는 입술은 귀한 보석이다.
16 Take the garment of one who puts up collateral for a stranger; and hold him in pledge for a wayward woman.Take his garment that is surety for a stranger; And hold him in pledge that is surety for foreigners.낯선 사람을 위해 보증을 선 자의 옷을 잡아 두고, 외인을 위해 보증한 자를 볼모로 붙잡아라.
17 Fraudulent food is sweet to a man, but afterwards his mouth is filled with gravel.Bread of falsehood is sweet to a man; But afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.속여서 얻은 음식은 사람에게 달지만, 나중에는 그 입에 자갈이 가득 차게 된다.
18 Plans are established by advice; by wise guidance you wage war!Every purpose is established by counsel; And by wise guidance make thou war.계획은 조언으로 세워지니, 지혜로운 인도를 받아 전쟁을 치르라.
19 He who goes about as a tale-bearer reveals secrets; therefore don’t keep company with him who opens wide his lips.He that goeth about as a tale-bearer revealeth secrets; Therefore company not with him that openeth wide his lips.이리저리 다니며 험담하는 자는 비밀을 누설하니, 입술을 함부로 놀리는 자와 사귀지 마라.
20 Whoever curses his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in blackness of darkness.Whoso curseth his father or his mother, His lamp shall be put out in blackness of darkness.자기 아버지나 어머니를 저주하는 사람은, 그 등불이 캄캄한 흑암 속에서 꺼질 것이다.
21 An inheritance quickly gained at the beginning won’t be blessed in the end.An inheritance may be gotten hastily at the beginning; But the end thereof shall not be blessed.처음에 급하게 얻은 유산은, 끝내 복을 받지 못한다.
22 Don’t say, “ I will pay back evil.” Wait for Yahweh, and he will save you.Say not thou, I will recompense evil: Wait for Jehovah, and he will save thee."내가 악을 갚겠다"고 말하지 마라. 여호와를 기다리라, 그러면 그분이 너를 구원하실 것이다.
23 Yahweh detests differing weights, and dishonest scales are not pleasing.Diverse weights are an abomination to Jehovah; And a false balance is not good.여호와께서는 서로 다른 저울추를 미워하시니, 속이는 저울은 기뻐하지 않으신다.
24 A man’s steps are from Yahweh; how then can man understand his way?A man’s goings are of Jehovah; How then can man understand his way?사람의 걸음은 여호와께로부터 오는 것이니, 그렇다면 사람이 어찌 자기 길을 깨달을 수 있겠는가?
25 It is a snare to a man to make a rash dedication, then later to consider his vows.It is a snare to a man rashly to say, It is holy, And after vows to make inquiry.함부로 거룩하게 바치겠다고 서원하고 나서, 나중에야 그 서원을 곱씹는 것은 사람에게 올무가 된다.
26 A wise king winnows out the wicked, and drives the threshing wheel over them.A wise king winnoweth the wicked, And bringeth the threshing -wheel over them.지혜로운 왕은 악한 자들을 키질하여 가려내고, 그들 위로 타작 수레바퀴를 굴린다.
27 The spirit of man is Yahweh’s lamp, searching all his innermost parts.The spirit of man is the lamp of Jehovah, Searching all his innermost parts.사람의 영은 여호와의 등불이니, 그의 가장 깊은 속까지 살피신다.
28 Love and faithfulness keep the king safe. His throne is sustained by love.Kindness and truth preserve the king; And his throne is upholden by kindness.사랑과 신실함이 왕을 안전하게 지키니, 그의 보좌는 사랑으로 떠받쳐진다.
29 The glory of young men is their strength. The splendor of old men is their gray hair.The glory of young men is their strength; And the beauty of old men is the hoary head.젊은이의 영광은 그들의 힘이고, 노인의 영화는 그들의 흰머리다.
30 Wounding blows cleanse away evil, and beatings purge the innermost parts.Stripes that wound cleanse away evil; And strokes reach the innermost parts.상하게 하는 매는 악을 씻어 내고, 채찍질은 속 깊은 곳까지 깨끗하게 한다.
