1 Every wise woman builds her house, but the foolish one tears it down with her own hands.Every wise woman buildeth her house; But the foolish plucketh it down with her own hands.지혜로운 여인은 자기 집을 세우지만, 어리석은 여인은 제 손으로 그것을 허문다.
2 He who walks in his uprightness fears Yahweh, but he who is perverse in his ways despises him.He that walketh in his uprightness feareth Jehovah; But he that is perverse in his ways despiseth him.올곧게 걷는 사람은 여호와를 경외하지만, 그 길이 비뚤어진 사람은 그분을 멸시한다.
3 The fool’s talk brings a rod to his back, but the lips of the wise protect them.In the mouth of the foolish is a rod for his pride; But the lips of the wise shall preserve them.어리석은 자의 말은 그 등에 매를 부르지만, 지혜로운 사람의 입술은 그들을 지켜 준다.
4 Where no oxen are, the crib is clean, but much increase is by the strength of the ox.Where no oxen are, the crib is clean; But much increase is by the strength of the ox.소가 없으면 외양간은 깨끗하지만, 소의 힘이 있어야 소출이 풍성해진다.
5 A truthful witness will not lie, but a false witness pours out lies.A faithful witness will not lie; But a false witness uttereth lies.진실한 증인은 거짓말하지 않지만, 거짓 증인은 거짓말을 쏟아 낸다.
6 A scoffer seeks wisdom, and doesn’t find it, but knowledge comes easily to a discerning person.A scoffer seeketh wisdom, and findeth it not; But knowledge is easy unto him that hath understanding.비웃는 자는 지혜를 찾아도 얻지 못하지만, 분별 있는 사람에게는 지식이 쉽게 온다.
7 Stay away from a foolish man, for you won’t find knowledge on his lips.Go into the presence of a foolish man, And thou shalt not perceive in him the lips of knowledge.어리석은 사람을 멀리하여라. 그의 입술에서는 지식을 찾을 수 없다.
8 The wisdom of the prudent is to think about his way, but the folly of fools is deceit.The wisdom of the prudent is to understand his way; But the folly of fools is deceit.슬기로운 사람의 지혜는 자기 길을 살피는 것이지만, 어리석은 자의 미련함은 속이는 것이다.
9 Fools mock at making atonement for sins, but among the upright there is good will.A trespass-offering mocketh fools; But among the upright there is good will.어리석은 자들은 죄를 속하는 일을 비웃지만, 올곧은 사람들 가운데는 선한 뜻이 있다.
10 The heart knows its own bitterness and joy; he will not share these with a stranger.The heart knoweth its own bitterness; And a stranger doth not intermeddle with its joy.마음은 자기만의 쓰라림과 기쁨을 알고 있으니, 이것을 낯선 사람과는 나누지 못한다.
11 The house of the wicked will be overthrown, but the tent of the upright will flourish.The house of the wicked shall be overthrown; But the tent of the upright shall flourish.악한 사람의 집은 무너지지만, 올곧은 사람의 장막은 번성한다.
12 There is a way which seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death.There is a way which seemeth right unto a man; But the end thereof are the ways of death.사람이 보기에 옳은 길이 있어도, 그 끝은 죽음으로 이어진다.
13 Even in laughter the heart may be sorrowful, and mirth may end in heaviness.Even in laughter the heart is sorrowful; And the end of mirth is heaviness.웃을 때에도 마음은 슬플 수 있고, 즐거움도 무거움으로 끝날 수 있다.
14 The unfaithful will be repaid for his own ways; likewise a good man will be rewarded for his ways.The backslider in heart shall be filled with his own ways; And a good man shall be satisfied from himself.신실하지 못한 사람은 자기 행위대로 갚음을 받고, 선한 사람도 자기 행위대로 보상을 받는다.
15 A simple man believes everything, but the prudent man carefully considers his ways.The simple believeth every word; But the prudent man looketh well to his going.어수룩한 사람은 모든 말을 믿지만, 슬기로운 사람은 자기 길을 신중히 살핀다.
16 A wise man fears and shuns evil, but the fool is hot headed and reckless.A wise man feareth, and departeth from evil; But the fool beareth himself insolently, and is confident.지혜로운 사람은 두려워하여 악을 피하지만, 어리석은 자는 성급하고 무모하다.
17 He who is quick to become angry will commit folly, and a crafty man is hated.He that is soon angry will deal foolishly; And a man of wicked devices is hated.쉽게 화내는 사람은 어리석은 일을 저지르고, 간교한 사람은 미움을 받는다.
18 The simple inherit folly, but the prudent are crowned with knowledge.The simple inherit folly; But the prudent are crowned with knowledge.어수룩한 사람은 미련함을 물려받지만, 슬기로운 사람은 지식으로 면류관을 쓴다.
19 The evil bow down before the good, and the wicked at the gates of the righteous.The evil bow down before the good; And the wicked, at the gates of the righteous.악한 자들은 선한 자들 앞에 엎드리고, 악인은 의인의 문 앞에 엎드린다.
20 The poor person is shunned even by his own neighbor, but the rich person has many friends.The poor is hated even of his own neighbor; But the rich hath many friends.가난한 사람은 이웃에게조차 외면당하지만, 부유한 사람에게는 친구가 많다.
21 He who despises his neighbor sins, but he who has pity on the poor is blessed.He that despiseth his neighbor sinneth; But he that hath pity on the poor, happy is he.이웃을 멸시하는 사람은 죄를 짓지만, 가난한 사람을 불쌍히 여기는 사람은 복이 있다.
22 Don’t they go astray who plot evil? But love and faithfulness belong to those who plan good.Do they not err that devise evil? But mercy and truth shall be to them that devise good.악을 꾀하는 자들은 길을 잃지 않겠느냐? 그러나 선을 계획하는 사람들에게는 사랑과 신실함이 있다.
23 In all hard work there is profit, but the talk of the lips leads only to poverty.In all labor there is profit; But the talk of the lips tendeth only to penury.모든 수고에는 유익이 있지만, 입술의 말뿐이면 가난에 이를 뿐이다.
24 The crown of the wise is their riches, but the folly of fools crowns them with folly.The crown of the wise is their riches; But the folly of fools is only folly.지혜로운 사람의 면류관은 그들의 부유함이지만, 어리석은 자의 미련함은 미련함으로 그들에게 관을 씌운다.
25 A truthful witness saves souls, but a false witness is deceitful.A true witness delivereth souls; But he that uttereth lies causeth deceit.진실한 증인은 생명을 구하지만, 거짓 증인은 속이는 자다.
26 In the fear of Yahweh is a secure fortress, and he will be a refuge for his children.In the fear of Jehovah is strong confidence; And his children shall have a place of refuge.여호와를 경외하는 데에 든든한 요새가 있으니, 그분은 그 자녀들의 피난처가 되신다.
27 The fear of Yahweh is a fountain of life, turning people from the snares of death.The fear of Jehovah is a fountain of life, That one may depart from the snares of death.여호와를 경외함은 생명의 샘이니, 사람을 죽음의 올무에서 벗어나게 한다.
28 In the multitude of people is the king’s glory, but in the lack of people is the destruction of the prince.In the multitude of people is the king’s glory; But in the want of people is the destruction of the prince.백성이 많으면 왕의 영광이지만, 백성이 적으면 군주의 멸망이다.
29 He who is slow to anger has great understanding, but he who has a quick temper displays folly.He that is slow to anger is of great understanding; But he that is hasty of spirit exalteth folly.노하기를 더디 하는 사람은 큰 명철이 있지만, 성급한 사람은 미련함을 드러낸다.
30 The life of the body is a heart at peace, but envy rots the bones.A tranquil heart is the life of the flesh; But envy is the rottenness of the bones.평온한 마음은 몸의 생명이지만, 시기는 뼈를 썩게 한다.
31 He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for his Maker, but he who is kind to the needy honors him.He that oppresseth the poor reproacheth his Maker; But he that hath mercy on the needy honoreth him.가난한 사람을 학대하는 사람은 자기를 지으신 분을 멸시하는 것이지만, 궁핍한 사람에게 친절한 사람은 그분을 영화롭게 한다.
32 The wicked is brought down in his calamity, but in death, the righteous has a refuge.The wicked is thrust down in his evil-doing; But the righteous hath a refuge in his death.악한 사람은 자기 재앙 가운데 쓰러지지만, 의인은 죽음 속에서도 피난처가 있다.
33 Wisdom rests in the heart of one who has understanding, and is even made known in the inward part of fools.Wisdom resteth in the heart of him that hath understanding; But that which is in the inward part of fools is made known.지혜는 명철한 사람의 마음에 머물러 있고, 어리석은 자들의 속마음에서도 드러난다.
34 Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people.Righteousness exalteth a nation; But sin is a reproach to any people.의는 나라를 높이지만, 죄는 어느 민족에게나 수치가 된다.
35 The king’s favor is toward a servant who deals wisely, but his wrath is toward one who causes shame.The king’s favor is toward a servant that dealeth wisely; But his wrath will be against him that causeth shame.왕의 호의는 지혜롭게 처신하는 신하에게 향하지만, 그의 진노는 수치를 끼치는 자에게 향한다.
