1 In those days, John the Baptizer came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, saying,And in those days cometh John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judæa, saying,그 무렵에 세례자 요한이 나타나 유대 광야에서 이렇게 외치며 전파하였다.
2 “ Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand!”Repent ye; for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."회개하라, 하늘 나라가 가까이 왔다!"
3 For this is he who was spoken of by Isaiah the prophet, saying, “ The voice of one crying in the wilderness, make the way of the Lord ready! Make his paths straight!”For this is he that was spoken of through Isaiah the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make ye ready the way of the Lord, Make his paths straight.이 사람은 선지자 이사야가 말한 바로 그 사람이니, 이사야는 이렇게 말하였다. "광야에서 외치는 자의 소리가 있어, 주의 길을 예비하고 그분의 길을 곧게 하라."
4 Now John himself wore clothing made of camel’ s hair with a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey.Now John himself had his raiment of camel’ s hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his food was locusts and wild honey.요한은 낙타털로 지은 옷을 입고 허리에 가죽 띠를 둘렀으며, 그의 음식은 메뚜기와 들꿀이었다.
5 Then people from Jerusalem, all of Judea, and all the region around the Jordan went out to him.Then went out unto him Jerusalem, and all Judæa, and all the region round about the Jordan;그러자 예루살렘과 온 유대와 요단강 주변 온 지역 사람들이 그에게 나아왔다.
6 They were baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins.and they were baptized of him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.그들은 자기 죄를 자백하며 요단강에서 요한에게 세례를 받았다.
7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for his baptism, he said to them, “ You offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said unto them, Ye offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?그러나 요한은 많은 바리새파 사람과 사두개파 사람이 자기에게 세례를 받으러 오는 것을 보고 그들에게 말하였다. "독사의 자식들아, 누가 너희에게 다가올 진노를 피하라고 일러 주더냐?
8 Therefore produce fruit worthy of repentance!Bring forth therefore fruit worthy of repentance:그러므로 회개에 합당한 열매를 맺어라!
9 Don’ t think to yourselves, ‘ We have Abraham for our father,’ for I tell you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones.and think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.'우리에게는 아브라함이 우리 조상이다' 하고 속으로 생각하지 마라. 내가 너희에게 말하노니, 하나님께서는 이 돌들로도 아브라함의 자손을 일으키실 수 있다.
10 Even now the ax lies at the root of the trees. Therefore every tree that doesn’ t produce good fruit is cut down, and cast into the fire.And even now the axe lieth at the root of the trees: every tree therefore that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.이제 도끼가 이미 나무뿌리에 놓여 있으니, 좋은 열매를 맺지 못하는 나무마다 찍혀 불 속에 던져진다.
11 “ I indeed baptize you in water for repentance, but he who comes after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit.I indeed baptize you in water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you in the Holy Spirit and in fire:나는 너희를 회개시키려고 물로 세례를 주지만, 내 뒤에 오시는 분은 나보다 더 능력이 크신 분이니, 나는 그분의 신을 들 자격조차 없다. 그분은 너희에게 성령으로 세례를 주실 것이다.
12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing floor. He will gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn up with unquenchable fire.”whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing-floor; and he will gather his wheat into the garner, but the chaff he will burn up with unquenchable fire.그분의 손에는 키가 들려 있어 자기 타작마당을 깨끗이 정리하실 것이니, 알곡은 곳간에 모아들이고 쭉정이는 꺼지지 않는 불에 태워 버리실 것이다."
13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him.Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to the Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.그때에 예수께서 갈릴리에서 요단강으로 요한에게 오셔서, 그에게 세례를 받으려 하셨다.
14 But John would have hindered him, saying, “ I need to be baptized by you, and you come to me?”But John would have hindered him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?그러나 요한은 그것을 말리며 말하였다. "제가 당신께 세례를 받아야 마땅한데, 당신께서 제게 오십니까?"
15 But Jesus, answering, said to him, “Allow it now, for this is the fitting way for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed him.But Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffereth him.그러나 예수께서 그에게 대답하여 말씀하셨다. "지금은 그렇게 하도록 허락하여라. 이렇게 하여 우리가 모든 의를 이루는 것이 마땅하다." 그제서야 요한이 허락하였다.
16 Jesus, when he was baptized, went up directly from the water: and behold, the heavens were opened to him. He saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming on him.And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway from the water: and lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming upon him;예수께서 세례를 받으시고 곧 물에서 올라오시니, 보라, 하늘이 그분께 열리고, 하나님의 성령이 비둘기처럼 내려와 그분 위에 임하시는 것을 보셨다.
17 Behold, a voice out of the heavens said, “ This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”and lo, a voice out of the heavens, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.그리고 보라, 하늘에서 한 음성이 있어 말하였다. "이는 내 사랑하는 아들이니, 내가 그를 매우 기뻐한다."
