2 A wise man’s heart is at his right hand, but a fool’s heart at his left.A wise man’s heart is at his right hand; but a fool’s heart at his left.지혜로운 사람의 마음은 오른쪽에 있고, 어리석은 사람의 마음은 왼쪽에 있다.
3 Yes also when the fool walks by the way, his understanding fails him, and he says to everyone that he is a fool.Yea also, when the fool walketh by the way, his understanding faileth him, and he saith to every one that he is a fool.어리석은 사람은 길을 걸어갈 때에도 분별력이 없어서, 만나는 사람마다 자기가 어리석다는 것을 스스로 드러낸다.
4 If the spirit of the ruler rises up against you, don’t leave your place; for gentleness lays great offenses to rest.If the spirit of the ruler rise up against thee, leave not thy place; for gentleness allayeth great offences.통치자가 너에게 화를 내더라도 네 자리를 떠나지 마라. 차분함은 큰 허물도 가라앉히기 때문이다.

8 He who digs a pit may fall into it; and whoever breaks through a wall may be bitten by a snake.He that diggeth a pit shall fall into it; and whoso breaketh through a wall, a serpent shall bite him.함정을 파는 사람은 그 안에 빠질 수 있고, 담을 허무는 사람은 뱀에게 물릴 수 있다.
9 Whoever carves out stones may be injured by them. Whoever splits wood may be endangered by it.Whoso heweth out stones shall be hurt therewith; and he that cleaveth wood is endangered thereby.돌을 떠내는 사람은 돌에 다칠 수 있고, 나무를 쪼개는 사람은 그 일로 위험을 당할 수 있다.
10 If the ax is blunt, and one doesn’t sharpen the edge, then he must use more strength; but skill brings success.If the iron be blunt, and one do not whet the edge, then must he put to more strength: but wisdom is profitable to direct.도끼가 무딘데도 날을 갈지 않으면 더 많은 힘을 써야 한다. 그러나 능숙한 솜씨는 일을 이루게 한다.
11 If the snake bites before it is charmed, then is there no profit for the charmer’s tongue.If the serpent bite before it is charmed, then is there no advantage in the charmer.뱀이 길들여지기 전에 물어 버리면, 부리는 사람의 혀에는 아무 이득이 없다.
12 The words of a wise man’s mouth are gracious; but a fool is swallowed by his own lips.The words of a wise man’s mouth are gracious; but the lips of a fool will swallow up himself.지혜로운 사람의 입에서 나오는 말은 은혜롭지만, 어리석은 사람은 자기 입술에 삼켜진다.

16 Woe to you, land, when your king is a child, and your princes eat in the morning!Woe to thee, O land, when thy king is a child, and thy princes eat in the morning!땅이여, 너의 왕이 어리고 너의 통치자들이 아침부터 잔치를 벌인다면 너에게 화가 있으리라.
17 Happy are you, land, when your king is the son of nobles, and your princes eat in due season, for strength, and not for drunkenness!Happy art thou, O land, when thy king is the son of nobles, and thy princes eat in due season, for strength, and not for drunkenness!땅이여, 너의 왕이 귀족의 아들이고, 너의 통치자들이 취하려 함이 아니라 힘을 얻으려고 알맞은 때에 먹는다면 너는 복이 있으리라.

20 Don’t curse the king, no, not in your thoughts; and don’t curse the rich in your bedroom, for a bird of the sky may carry your voice, and that which has wings may tell the matter.Revile not the king, no, not in thy thought; and revile not the rich in thy bedchamber: for a bird of the heavens shall carry the voice, and that which hath wings shall tell the matter.왕을 저주하지 마라. 마음속으로라도 그리하지 마라. 부유한 사람을 너의 침실에서라도 저주하지 마라. 하늘의 새가 네 목소리를 옮기고, 날개 달린 것이 그 일을 전할 수 있기 때문이다.
