1 The word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and encamped beside Ebenezer; and the Philistines encamped in Aphek.And the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and encamped beside Eben-ezer: and the Philistines encamped in Aphek.사무엘의 말씀이 온 이스라엘에게 임하였다. 그때에 이스라엘은 블레셋 사람과 싸우러 나가 에벤에셀 곁에 진을 쳤고, 블레셋 사람은 아벡에 진을 쳤다.
2 The Philistines put themselves in array against Israel. When they joined battle, Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who killed about four thousand men of the army in the field.And the Philistines put themselves in array against Israel: and when they joined battle, Israel was smitten before the Philistines; and they slew of the army in the field about four thousand men.블레셋 사람이 이스라엘을 향해 전열을 갖추었고, 그들이 맞붙어 싸우자 이스라엘이 블레셋 사람 앞에서 패하였으니, 그들이 들에서 이스라엘 군대 가운데 약 사천 명을 쳐 죽였다.
3 When the people had come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, “ Why has Yahweh defeated us today before the Philistines? Let’s get the ark of Yahweh’s covenant out of Shiloh and bring it to us, that it may come among us and save us out of the hand of our enemies.”And when the people were come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, Wherefore hath Jehovah smitten us to-day before the Philistines? Let us fetch the ark of the covenant of Jehovah out of Shiloh unto us, that it may come among us, and save us out of the hand of our enemies.백성이 진영으로 돌아오자 이스라엘의 장로들이 말하였다. "여호와께서 어찌하여 오늘 우리를 블레셋 사람 앞에서 패하게 하셨는가? 실로에서 여호와의 언약궤를 우리에게로 가져오자. 그것이 우리 가운데로 들어와 우리를 원수의 손에서 구원하게 하자."
4 So the people sent to Shiloh, and they brought from there the ark of the covenant of Yahweh of Armies, who sits above the cherubim; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.So the people sent to Shiloh; and they brought from thence the ark of the covenant of Jehovah of hosts, who sitteth above the cherubim: and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.그리하여 백성이 실로로 사람을 보내어, 그룹 위에 좌정하신 만군의 여호와의 언약궤를 거기서 메어 왔다. 엘리의 두 아들 홉니와 비느하스도 하나님의 언약궤와 함께 거기에 있었다.
5 When the ark of Yahweh’s covenant came into the camp, all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth resounded.And when the ark of the covenant of Jehovah came into the camp, all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth rang again.여호와의 언약궤가 진영으로 들어오자 온 이스라엘이 큰 소리로 외쳐 땅이 다시 울렸다.
6 When the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, “ What does the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews mean?” They understood that Yahweh’s ark had come into the camp.And when the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, What meaneth the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews? And they understood that the ark of Jehovah was come into the camp.블레셋 사람이 그 외치는 소리를 듣고 말하였다. "히브리 사람의 진영에서 이렇게 크게 외치는 소리는 무슨 까닭인가?" 그러고는 여호와의 궤가 진영에 들어온 것을 알았다.
7 The Philistines were afraid, for they said, “ God has come into the camp.” They said, “Woe to us! For there has not been such a thing before.And the Philistines were afraid, for they said, God is come into the camp. And they said, Woe unto us! for there hath not been such a thing heretofore.블레셋 사람이 두려워하며 말하였다. "신이 진영에 들어왔다." 또 말하였다. "우리에게 화가 있도다! 이전에는 이런 일이 없었다.
8 Woe to us! Who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty gods? These are the gods that struck the Egyptians with all kinds of plagues in the wilderness.Woe unto us! who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty gods? these are the gods that smote the Egyptians with all manner of plagues in the wilderness.우리에게 화가 있도다! 누가 이 강한 신들의 손에서 우리를 건져 내겠는가? 이들은 광야에서 온갖 재앙으로 이집트 사람을 친 신들이다.
9 Be strong and behave like men, O you Philistines, that you not be servants to the Hebrews, as they have been to you. Strengthen yourselves like men, and fight!”Be strong, and quit yourselves like men, O ye Philistines, that ye be not servants unto the Hebrews, as they have been to you: quit yourselves like men, and fight.블레셋 사람들아, 강하게 하고 대장부답게 행하라. 히브리 사람이 너희를 섬긴 것같이 너희가 그들을 섬기게 되지 않도록 하라. 대장부답게 스스로 강하게 하고 싸우라!"
10 The Philistines fought, and Israel was defeated, and each man fled to his tent. There was a very great slaughter; for thirty thousand footmen of Israel fell.And the Philistines fought, and Israel was smitten, and they fled every man to his tent: and there was a very great slaughter; for there fell of Israel thirty thousand footmen.블레셋 사람이 싸우자 이스라엘이 패하여 각기 자기 장막으로 도망하였으니, 그 살육이 심히 컸다. 이스라엘에서 보병 삼만 명이 쓰러졌다.
11 God’s ark was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were slain.And the ark of God was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were slain.하나님의 궤를 빼앗겼고, 엘리의 두 아들 홉니와 비느하스도 죽임을 당하였다.
12 A man of Benjamin ran out of the army and came to Shiloh the same day, with his clothes torn and with dirt on his head.And there ran a man of Benjamin out of the army, and came to Shiloh the same day, with his clothes rent, and with earth upon his head.그날에 베냐민 사람 하나가 전쟁터에서 달려와 옷을 찢고 머리에 흙을 뒤집어쓴 채 실로에 이르렀다.
13 When he came, behold, Eli was sitting on his seat by the road watching, for his heart trembled for God’s ark. When the man came into the city and told about it, all the city cried out.And when he came, lo, Eli was sitting upon his seat by the wayside watching; for his heart trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city, and told it, all the city cried out.그가 이르렀을 때, 보라, 엘리가 길가 자기 의자에 앉아 지켜보고 있었으니, 이는 그의 마음이 하나님의 궤로 인하여 떨고 있었기 때문이다. 그 사람이 성읍에 들어와 그 일을 알리니 온 성읍이 부르짖었다.
14 When Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, “ What does the noise of this tumult mean?” The man hurried, and came and told Eli.And when Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, What meaneth the noise of this tumult? And the man hasted, and came and told Eli.엘리가 그 부르짖는 소리를 듣고 말하였다. "이 소란한 소리는 무슨 까닭인가?" 그 사람이 급히 와서 엘리에게 알렸다.
15 Now Eli was ninety-eight years old. His eyes were set, so that he could not see.Now Eli was ninety and eight years old; and his eyes were set, so that he could not see.그때 엘리는 나이가 아흔여덟 살이라 눈이 어두워 볼 수 없었다.
16 The man said to Eli, “ I am he who came out of the army, and I fled today out of the army.” He said, “ How did the matter go, my son?”And the man said unto Eli, I am he that came out of the army, and I fled to-day out of the army. And he said, How went the matter, my son?그 사람이 엘리에게 말하였다. "나는 전쟁터에서 나온 자로, 오늘 전쟁터에서 도망하여 왔습니다." 엘리가 말하였다. "내 아들아, 일이 어떻게 되었느냐?"
17 He who brought the news answered, “ Israel has fled before the Philistines, and there has been also a great slaughter among the people. Your two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and God’s ark has been captured.”And he that brought the tidings answered and said, Israel is fled before the Philistines, and there hath been also a great slaughter among the people, and thy two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God is taken.소식을 전한 자가 대답하였다. "이스라엘이 블레셋 사람 앞에서 도망하였고, 백성 가운데 큰 살육이 있었으며, 당신의 두 아들 홉니와 비느하스도 죽었고, 하나님의 궤는 빼앗겼습니다."
18 When he made mention of God’s ark, Eli fell from off his seat backward by the side of the gate; and his neck broke, and he died, for he was an old man and heavy. He had judged Israel forty years.And it came to pass, when he made mention of the ark of God, that Eli fell from off his seat backward by the side of the gate; and his neck brake, and he died: for he was an old man, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.그가 하나님의 궤를 언급하자, 엘리가 문 곁에서 의자에서 뒤로 넘어져 목이 부러져 죽었으니, 이는 그가 늙고 비대하였기 때문이다. 그는 사십 년 동안 이스라엘의 사사로 있었다.
19 His daughter-in-law, Phinehas’ wife, was with child, near to giving birth. When she heard the news that God’s ark was taken and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and gave birth; for her pains came on her.And his daughter-in-law, Phinehas’ wife, was with child, near to be delivered: and when she heard the tidings that the ark of God was taken, and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and brought forth; for her pains came upon her.그의 며느리 곧 비느하스의 아내가 임신하여 해산할 때가 가까웠는데, 하나님의 궤를 빼앗겼고 시아버지와 남편이 죽었다는 소식을 듣고는 몸을 굽혀 해산하였으니, 이는 산고가 그에게 닥쳤기 때문이다.
20 About the time of her death the women who stood by her said to her, “Don’t be afraid, for you have given birth to a son.” But she didn’t answer, neither did she regard it.And about the time of her death the women that stood by her said unto her, Fear not; for thou hast brought forth a son. But she answered not, neither did she regard it.그가 죽을 때쯤 곁에 섰던 여인들이 말하였다. "두려워하지 마시오. 아들을 낳았소." 그러나 그는 대답하지도 않고 마음에 두지도 않았다.
21 She named the child Ichabod, saying, “ The glory has departed from Israel!” because God’s ark was taken, and because of her father-in-law and her husband.And she named the child Ichabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel; because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father-in-law and her husband.그가 아이의 이름을 이가봇이라 하며 말하였다. "영광이 이스라엘에서 떠났다." 이는 하나님의 궤를 빼앗겼고 시아버지와 남편이 죽었기 때문이다.
22 She said, “ The glory has departed from Israel; for God’s ark has been taken.”And she said, The glory is departed from Israel; for the ark of God is taken.그가 또 말하였다. "영광이 이스라엘에서 떠났다. 하나님의 궤를 빼앗겼기 때문이다."
