1 Saul was thirty years old when he became king, and he reigned over Israel forty-two years.Saul was forty years old when he began to reign; and when he had reigned two years over Israel,사울이 왕이 되어 다스린 지 한 해가 지났고, 이스라엘을 두 해째 다스리고 있을 때였다.
2 Saul chose for himself three thousand men of Israel, of which two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and in the Mount of Bethel, and one thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin. He sent the rest of the people to their own tents.Saul chose him three thousand men of Israel, whereof two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and in the mount of Beth-el, and a thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin: and the rest of the people he sent every man to his tent.사울은 이스라엘 가운데서 삼천 명을 골라, 이천 명은 자기와 함께 믹마스와 벧엘 산지에 두고, 천 명은 요나단과 함께 베냐민 땅 기브아에 두었으며, 나머지 백성은 저마다 자기 장막으로 돌려보냈다.
3 Jonathan struck the garrison of the Philistines that was in Geba, and the Philistines heard of it. Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, “Let the Hebrews hear!”And Jonathan smote the garrison of the Philistines that was in Geba; and the Philistines heard of it. And Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, Let the Hebrews hear.요나단이 게바에 있던 블레셋 사람의 진영을 쳤고, 블레셋 사람들이 그 소식을 들었다. 사울이 온 땅에 나팔을 불며 "히브리 사람들은 들으라!" 하고 외쳤다.
4 All Israel heard that Saul had struck the garrison of the Philistines, and also that Israel was considered an abomination to the Philistines. The people were gathered together after Saul to Gilgal.And all Israel heard say that Saul had smitten the garrison of the Philistines, and also that Israel was had in abomination with the Philistines. And the people were gathered together after Saul to Gilgal.온 이스라엘은 사울이 블레셋 사람의 진영을 쳤다는 것과, 이스라엘이 블레셋 사람에게 미움받게 되었다는 소식을 들었다. 그리하여 백성이 사울을 따라 길갈로 모여들었다.
5 The Philistines assembled themselves together to fight with Israel: thirty thousand chariots, six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand which is on the seashore in multitude. They came up and encamped in Michmash, eastward of Beth Aven.And the Philistines assembled themselves together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand which is on the sea-shore in multitude: and they came up, and encamped in Michmash, eastward of Beth-aven.블레셋 사람들이 이스라엘과 싸우려고 함께 모였는데, 병거가 삼만이요 기마병이 육천이며, 백성은 바닷가의 모래처럼 수가 많았다. 그들이 올라와 벧아웬 동쪽 믹마스에 진을 쳤다.
6 When the men of Israel saw that they were in trouble ( for the people were distressed ), then the people hid themselves in caves, in thickets, in rocks, in tombs, and in pits.When the men of Israel saw that they were in a strait ( for the people were distressed ), then the people did hide themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in coverts, and in pits.이스라엘 사람들은 자기들이 위태롭게 된 것을 보고(백성이 곤경에 빠졌으므로) 굴과 수풀과 바위와 은밀한 곳과 웅덩이에 숨었다.
7 Now some of the Hebrews had gone over the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead; but as for Saul, he was yet in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling.Now some of the Hebrews had gone over the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead; but as for Saul, he was yet in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling.어떤 히브리 사람들은 요단강을 건너 갓과 길르앗 땅으로 갔으나, 사울은 여전히 길갈에 있었고, 그를 따르는 온 백성은 두려워 떨고 있었다.
8 He stayed seven days, according to the time set by Samuel; but Samuel didn’t come to Gilgal, and the people were scattering from him.And he tarried seven days, according to the set time that Samuel had appointed: but Samuel came not to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him.사울이 사무엘이 정한 때를 따라 이레를 기다렸으나, 사무엘은 길갈로 오지 않았고, 백성은 그에게서 흩어지고 있었다.
9 Saul said, “ Bring the burnt offering to me here, and the peace offerings.” He offered the burnt offering.And Saul said, Bring hither the burnt-offering to me, and the peace-offerings. And he offered the burnt-offering.사울이 말하기를 "번제와 화목제물을 내게로 가져오라" 하고는 번제를 드렸다.
10 It came to pass that as soon as he had finished offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might greet him.And it came to pass that, as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt-offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might salute him.그가 번제 드리기를 막 마쳤을 때에, 보라, 사무엘이 왔다. 사울이 그를 맞아 인사하려고 나아갔다.
11 Samuel said, “ What have you done?” Saul said, “ Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that you didn’t come within the days appointed, and that the Philistines assembled themselves together at Michmash,And Samuel said, What hast thou done? And Saul said, Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that thou camest not within the days appointed, and that the Philistines assembled themselves together at Michmash;사무엘이 "당신이 무슨 일을 하였소?" 하고 묻자, 사울이 대답하였다. "백성은 나에게서 흩어지고, 당신은 정한 날 안에 오지 않으며, 블레셋 사람들은 믹마스에 모여드는 것을 내가 보았기 때문입니다.
12 therefore I said, ‘ Now the Philistines will come down on me to Gilgal, and I haven’t entreated the favor of Yahweh.’ I forced myself therefore, and offered the burnt offering.”therefore said I, Now will the Philistines come down upon me to Gilgal, and I have not entreated the favor of Jehovah: I forced myself therefore, and offered the burnt-offering.그래서 내가 '이제 블레셋 사람들이 길갈로 나를 치러 내려올 텐데, 나는 아직 여호와께 은혜를 구하지 못하였다' 하고는, 마지못해 스스로 번제를 드렸습니다."
13 Samuel said to Saul, “ You have done foolishly. You have not kept the commandment of Yahweh your God, which he commanded you; for now Yahweh would have established your kingdom on Israel forever.And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly; thou hast not kept the commandment of Jehovah thy God, which he commanded thee: for now would Jehovah have established thy kingdom upon Israel for ever.사무엘이 사울에게 말하였다. "당신은 어리석은 일을 하였소. 당신은 여호와 당신의 하나님께서 당신에게 명령하신 그 명령을 지키지 않았소. 그렇지 않았더라면 여호와께서 이스라엘 위에 당신의 나라를 영원히 굳게 세우셨을 것이오.
14 But now your kingdom will not continue. Yahweh has sought for himself a man after his own heart, and Yahweh has appointed him to be prince over his people, because you have not kept that which Yahweh commanded you.”But now thy kingdom shall not continue: Jehovah hath sought him a man after his own heart, and Jehovah hath appointed him to be prince over his people, because thou hast not kept that which Jehovah commanded thee.그러나 이제 당신의 나라가 이어지지 못할 것이오. 여호와께서 당신이 여호와께서 명령하신 것을 지키지 않았으므로, 그 마음에 맞는 사람을 찾으셨고, 여호와께서 그를 자기 백성의 통치자로 세우셨소."
15 Samuel arose, and went from Gilgal to Gibeah of Benjamin. Saul counted the people who were present with him, about six hundred men.And Samuel arose, and gat him up from Gilgal unto Gibeah of Benjamin. And Saul numbered the people that were present with him, about six hundred men.사무엘이 일어나 길갈에서 베냐민 땅 기브아로 올라갔다. 사울이 자기와 함께 있는 백성을 세어 보니 약 육백 명이었다.
16 Saul, and Jonathan his son, and the people who were present with them, stayed in Geba of Benjamin; but the Philistines encamped in Michmash.And Saul, and Jonathan his son, and the people that were present with them, abode in Geba of Benjamin: but the Philistines encamped in Michmash.사울과 그의 아들 요나단과 그들과 함께 있는 백성은 베냐민 땅 게바에 머물렀고, 블레셋 사람들은 믹마스에 진을 쳤다.
17 The raiders came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies: one company turned to the way that leads to Ophrah, to the land of Shual;And the spoilers came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies: one company turned unto the way that leadeth to Ophrah, unto the land of Shual;블레셋 사람의 진영에서 노략하는 무리가 세 떼로 나왔는데, 한 떼는 오브라로 가는 길을 따라 수알 땅으로 향하였고,
18 another company turned the way to Beth Horon; and another company turned the way of the border that looks down on the valley of Zeboim toward the wilderness.and another company turned the way to Beth-horon; and another company turned the way of the border that looketh down upon the valley of Zeboim toward the wilderness.또 한 떼는 벧호론으로 가는 길로 향하였으며, 또 한 떼는 광야 쪽 스보임 골짜기를 내려다보는 경계 길로 향하였다.
19 Now there was no blacksmith found throughout all the land of Israel, for the Philistines said, “ Lest the Hebrews make themselves swords or spears”;Now there was no smith found throughout all the land of Israel; for the Philistines said, Lest the Hebrews make them swords or spears:그때 이스라엘 온 땅에 대장장이가 한 사람도 없었으니, 블레셋 사람들이 "히브리 사람들이 칼이나 창을 만들까 한다" 하였기 때문이다.
20 but all the Israelites went down to the Philistines, each man to sharpen his own plowshare, mattock, ax, and sickle.but all the Israelites went down to the Philistines, to sharpen every man his share, and his coulter, and his axe, and his mattock;그래서 이스라엘 사람들은 저마다 보습과 괭이와 도끼와 낫을 벼리려고 블레셋 사람들에게 내려가곤 하였다.
21 The price was one payim each to sharpen mattocks, plowshares, pitchforks, axes, and goads.yet they had a file for the mattocks, and for the coulters, and for the forks, and for the axes, and to set the goads.보습과 괭이와 쇠스랑과 도끼를 벼리고 소를 모는 막대기의 끝을 손질하는 데에는 삯이 있었다.
22 So it came to pass in the day of battle that neither sword nor spear was found in the hand of any of the people who were with Saul and Jonathan; but Saul and Jonathan his son had them.So it came to pass in the day of battle, that there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people that were with Saul and Jonathan: but with Saul and with Jonathan his son was there found.그리하여 전쟁이 일어난 날, 사울과 요나단과 함께한 백성의 손에는 칼도 창도 없었고, 오직 사울과 그의 아들 요나단에게만 있었다.
23 The garrison of the Philistines went out to the pass of Michmash.And the garrison of the Philistines went out unto the pass of Michmash.그리고 블레셋 사람의 진영이 믹마스 어귀로 나아갔다.
