1 Then Nahash the Ammonite came up and encamped against Jabesh Gilead; and all the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, “ Make a covenant with us, and we will serve you.”Then Nahash the Ammonite came up, and encamped against Jabesh-gilead: and all the men of Jabesh said unto Nahash, Make a covenant with us, and we will serve thee.그때에 암몬 사람 나하스가 올라와서 야베스 길르앗을 향하여 진을 쳤다. 야베스의 모든 사람이 나하스에게 말하였다. "우리와 언약을 맺으십시오. 그러면 우리가 당신을 섬기겠습니다."
2 Nahash the Ammonite said to them, “ On this condition I will make it with you, that all your right eyes be gouged out. I will make this dishonor all Israel.”And Nahash the Ammonite said unto them, On this condition will I make it with you, that all your right eyes be put out; and I will lay it for a reproach upon all Israel.암몬 사람 나하스가 그들에게 말하였다. "내가 한 가지 조건으로 너희와 언약을 맺겠다. 곧 너희 모두의 오른쪽 눈을 빼어 온 이스라엘에게 수치가 되게 하는 것이다."
3 The elders of Jabesh said to him, “Give us seven days, that we may send messengers to all the borders of Israel; and then, if there is no one to save us, we will come out to you.”And the elders of Jabesh said unto him, Give us seven days’ respite, that we may send messengers unto all the borders of Israel; and then, if there be none to save us, we will come out to thee.야베스의 장로들이 그에게 말하였다. "우리에게 이레 동안의 말미를 주십시오. 그동안 우리가 이스라엘의 온 지경에 사자들을 보내겠습니다. 그래도 우리를 구원할 사람이 없으면 우리가 당신에게 나아가겠습니다."
4 Then the messengers came to Gibeah of Saul, and spoke these words in the ears of the people, then all the people lifted up their voice and wept.Then came the messengers to Gibeah of Saul, and spake these words in the ears of the people: and all the people lifted up their voice, and wept.그래서 사자들이 사울의 고향 기브아에 이르러 이 말을 백성의 귀에 전하니, 모든 백성이 소리 높여 울었다.
5 Behold, Saul came following the oxen out of the field; and Saul said, “ What ails the people that they weep?” They told him the words of the men of Jabesh.And, behold, Saul came following the oxen out of the field; and Saul said, What aileth the people that they weep? And they told him the words of the men of Jabesh.마침 사울이 밭에서 소를 몰며 돌아오다가 물었다. "백성이 무슨 일로 우는 것이냐?" 사람들이 야베스 사람들의 말을 그에게 전하였다.
6 God’s Spirit came mightily on Saul when he heard those words, and his anger burned hot.And the Spirit of God came mightily upon Saul when he heard those words, and his anger was kindled greatly.사울이 그 말을 들었을 때에 하나님의 영이 그에게 강하게 임하셨고, 그의 분노가 크게 일어났다.
7 He took a yoke of oxen and cut them in pieces, then sent them throughout all the borders of Israel by the hand of messengers, saying, “ Whoever doesn’t come out after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done to his oxen.” The dread of Yahweh fell on the people, and they came out as one man.And he took a yoke of oxen, and cut them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the borders of Israel by the hand of messengers, saying, Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. And the dread of Jehovah fell on the people, and they came out as one man.그가 소 한 겨리를 끌어다가 토막을 내어 사자들의 손에 들려 이스라엘의 온 지경으로 보내며 말하였다. "누구든지 나와서 사울과 사무엘을 따르지 않으면 그의 소도 이와 같이 될 것이다." 그러자 여호와께서 주시는 두려움이 백성에게 임하여, 그들이 한 사람같이 나아왔다.
8 He counted them in Bezek; and the children of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand.And he numbered them in Bezek; and the children of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand.사울이 베섹에서 그들의 수를 세니, 이스라엘 자손이 삼십만 명이요 유다 사람이 삼만 명이었다.
9 They said to the messengers who came, “ Tell the men of Jabesh Gilead, ‘ Tomorrow, by the time the sun is hot, you will be rescued.’” The messengers came and told the men of Jabesh; and they were glad.And they said unto the messengers that came, Thus shall ye say unto the men of Jabesh-gilead, To-morrow, by the time the sun is hot, ye shall have deliverance. And the messengers came and told the men of Jabesh; and they were glad.그들이 찾아온 사자들에게 말하였다. "야베스 길르앗 사람들에게 이렇게 전하여라. '내일 해가 뜨거워질 때쯤에 너희가 구원을 얻을 것이다.'" 사자들이 가서 야베스 사람들에게 전하니, 그들이 기뻐하였다.
10 Therefore the men of Jabesh said, “ Tomorrow we will come out to you, and you shall do with us all that seems good to you.”Therefore the men of Jabesh said, To-morrow we will come out unto you, and ye shall do with us all that seemeth good unto you.그래서 야베스 사람들이 말하였다. "내일 우리가 당신들에게 나아가리니, 당신들 좋을 대로 우리에게 행하십시오."
11 On the next day, Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the middle of the camp in the morning watch, and struck the Ammonites until the heat of the day. Those who remained were scattered, so that no two of them were left together.And it was so on the morrow, that Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the camp in the morning watch, and smote the Ammonites until the heat of the day: and it came to pass, that they that remained were scattered, so that not two of them were left together.이튿날 사울이 백성을 세 부대로 나누고, 새벽녘에 적진 한가운데로 쳐들어가 한낮의 더위가 이를 때까지 암몬 사람들을 쳤다. 그리하여 살아남은 자들은 다 흩어져, 그들 가운데 둘이 함께 남은 자가 없었다.
12 The people said to Samuel, “ Who is he who said, ‘ Shall Saul reign over us?’ Bring those men, that we may put them to death!”And the people said unto Samuel, Who is he that said, Shall Saul reign over us? bring the men, that we may put them to death.백성이 사무엘에게 말하였다. "사울이 어찌 우리를 다스리겠느냐고 한 자가 누구입니까? 그 사람들을 끌어내십시오. 우리가 그들을 죽이겠습니다."
13 Saul said, “ No man shall be put to death today; for today Yahweh has rescued Israel.”And Saul said, There shall not a man be put to death this day; for to-day Jehovah hath wrought deliverance in Israel.그러나 사울이 말하였다. "오늘은 한 사람도 죽이지 못한다. 오늘 여호와께서 이스라엘에 구원을 베푸셨기 때문이다."
14 Then Samuel said to the people, “ Come! Let’s go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there.”Then said Samuel to the people, Come, and let us go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there.그때에 사무엘이 백성에게 말하였다. "자, 우리가 길갈로 가서 거기서 나라를 새롭게 하자."
15 All the people went to Gilgal; and there they made Saul king before Yahweh in Gilgal. There they offered sacrifices of peace offerings before Yahweh; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.And all the people went to Gilgal; and there they made Saul king before Jehovah in Gilgal; and there they offered sacrifices of peace-offerings before Jehovah; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.모든 백성이 길갈로 가서, 거기 여호와 앞에서 사울을 왕으로 삼았다. 그리고 거기 여호와 앞에서 화목제를 드렸으며, 사울과 이스라엘의 모든 사람이 거기서 크게 기뻐하였다.
