4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men.In him was life; and the life was the light of men.그분 안에 생명이 있었으니, 그 생명은 사람들의 빛이었다.
5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness hasn’ t overcome it.And the light shineth in the darkness; and the darkness apprehended it not.그 빛이 어둠 속에서 비치고 있으나, 어둠은 그 빛을 이기지 못하였다.
6 There came a man sent from God, whose name was John.There came a man, sent from God, whose name was John.하나님께서 보내신 한 사람이 있었으니, 그의 이름은 요한이었다.
7 The same came as a witness, that he might testify about the light, that all might believe through him.The same came for witness, that he might bear witness of the light, that all might believe through him.그는 그 빛에 대하여 증언하여 모든 사람이 자기를 통해 믿게 하려고 증인으로 왔다.
8 He was not the light, but was sent that he might testify about the light.He was not the light, but came that he might bear witness of the light.그 자신은 빛이 아니었고, 다만 그 빛에 대하여 증언하도록 보내심을 받았다.
9 The true light that enlightens everyone was coming into the world.There was the true light, even the light which lighteth every man, coming into the world.모든 사람을 비추는 참빛이 세상에 오고 있었다.
10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, and the world didn’ t recognize him.He was in the world, and the world was made through him, and the world knew him not.그분이 세상에 계셨고 세상이 그분을 통해 지어졌으나, 세상은 그분을 알아보지 못하였다.
11 He came to his own, and those who were his own didn’ t receive him.He came unto his own, and they that were his own received him not.그분이 자기 백성에게 오셨으나, 자기 백성은 그분을 받아들이지 않았다.
12 But as many as received him, to them he gave the right to become God’s children, to those who believe in his name:But as many as received him, to them gave he the right to become children of God, even to them that believe on his name:그러나 그분을 받아들인 사람들, 곧 그분의 이름을 믿는 사람들에게는 하나님의 자녀가 되는 권세를 주셨다.
13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.이들은 혈통이나 육신의 뜻이나 사람의 뜻으로 난 것이 아니라, 하나님께로부터 난 사람들이다.
14 The Word became flesh and lived among us. We saw his glory, such glory as of the only born Son of the Father, full of grace and truth.And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us ( and we beheld his glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father ), full of grace and truth.말씀이 육신이 되어 우리 가운데 거하셨다. 우리가 그분의 영광을 보았으니, 아버지의 독생자의 영광이요, 은혜와 진리가 충만하였다.
15 John testified about him. He cried out, saying, “ This was he of whom I said, ‘ He who comes after me has surpassed me, for he was before me.’”John beareth witness of him, and crieth, saying, This was he of whom I said, He that cometh after me is become before me: for he was before me.요한이 그분에 대하여 증언하여 외쳐 말하였다. "내가 전에 말한 분이 바로 이분이시다. '내 뒤에 오시는 분이 나보다 앞서신다. 그분은 나보다 먼저 계셨기 때문이다.'"
16 From his fullness we all received grace upon grace.For of his fulness we all received, and grace for grace.우리가 다 그분의 충만함에서 은혜 위에 은혜를 받았다.
17 For the law was given through Moses. Grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ.For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.율법은 모세를 통해 주어졌으나, 은혜와 진리는 예수 그리스도를 통해 이루어졌다.
18 No one has seen God at any time. The only born Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, has declared him.No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.일찍이 하나님을 본 사람은 아무도 없다. 아버지 품속에 계신 독생자, 그분이 하나님을 나타내 보이셨다.
19 This is John’s testimony, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “ Who are you?”And this is the witness of John, when the Jews sent unto him from Jerusalem priests and Levites to ask him, Who art thou?유대 사람들이 예루살렘에서 제사장들과 레위 사람들을 요한에게 보내어 "당신은 누구요?" 하고 물었을 때, 요한이 한 증언은 이러하다.
20 He declared, and didn’ t deny, but he declared, “ I am not the Christ.”And he confessed, and denied not; and he confessed, I am not the Christ.그는 숨김없이 고백하며 부인하지 않고 분명히 말하였다. "나는 그리스도가 아니다."
21 They asked him, “ What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “ I am not.” “ Are you the prophet?” He answered, “ No.”And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elijah? And he saith, I am not. Art thou the prophet? And he answered, No.그들이 그에게 물었다. "그러면 무엇이오? 당신이 엘리야요?" 그가 말하였다. "나는 아니다." "당신이 그 선지자요?" 그가 대답하였다. "아니다."
22 They said therefore to him, “ Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”They said therefore unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?그러므로 그들이 그에게 말하였다. 23 He said, “ I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘ Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as Isaiah the prophet said.”He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said Isaiah the prophet.그가 말하였다. "선지자 이사야가 말한 대로, 나는 '주의 길을 곧게 하라' 하고 광야에서 외치는 자의 소리이다."
24 The ones who had been sent were from the Pharisees.And they had been sent from the Pharisees.보냄을 받은 이들은 바리새파 사람들에게서 온 자들이었다.
25 They asked him, “ Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?”And they asked him, and said unto him, Why then baptizest thou, if thou art not the Christ, neither Elijah, neither the prophet?그들이 그에게 물었다. "당신이 그리스도도 아니요 엘리야도 아니요 그 선지자도 아니라면, 어찌하여 세례를 주는 것이오?"
26 John answered them, “ I baptize in water, but among you stands one whom you don’ t know.John answered them, saying, I baptize in water: in the midst of you standeth one whom ye know not,요한이 그들에게 대답하였다. "나는 물로 세례를 주지만, 여러분 가운데 여러분이 알지 못하는 한 분이 서 계신다.
27 He is the one who comes after me, who is preferred before me, whose sandal strap I’m not worthy to loosen.”even he that cometh after me, the latchet of whose shoe I am not worthy to unloose.그분은 내 뒤에 오시는 분으로, 나는 그분의 신발 끈을 풀 자격도 없다."

29 The next day, he saw Jesus coming to him, and said, “ Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!On the morrow he seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold, the Lamb of God, that taketh away the sin of the world!이튿날 요한은 예수께서 자기에게 오시는 것을 보고 말하였다. "보라, 세상 죄를 지고 가시는 하나님의 어린양이시다!
30 This is he of whom I said, ‘ After me comes a man who is preferred before me, for he was before me.’This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man who is become before me: for he was before me.내가 전에 '내 뒤에 한 분이 오시는데 그분은 나보다 앞서신다. 그분은 나보다 먼저 계셨기 때문이다' 하고 말한 분이 바로 이분이시다.
31 I didn’ t know him, but for this reason I came baptizing in water, that he would be revealed to Israel.”And I knew him not; but that he should be made manifest to Israel, for this cause came I baptizing in water.나도 그분을 알지 못하였으나, 그분이 이스라엘에게 나타나시게 하려고 내가 물로 세례를 주러 온 것이다."
32 John testified, saying, “ I have seen the Spirit descending like a dove out of heaven, and it remained on him.And John bare witness, saying, I have beheld the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven; and it abode upon him.요한이 또 증언하여 말하였다. "나는 성령이 비둘기같이 하늘에서 내려와 그분 위에 머무는 것을 보았다.
33 I didn’ t recognize him, but he who sent me to baptize in water said to me, ‘ On whomever you will see the Spirit descending and remaining on him is he who baptizes in the Holy Spirit.’And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize in water, he said unto me, Upon whomsoever thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and abiding upon him, the same is he that baptizeth in the Holy Spirit.나도 그분을 알아보지 못하였으나, 나를 보내어 물로 세례를 주게 하신 분이 내게 말씀하셨다. '네가 성령이 내려와 어떤 사람 위에 머무는 것을 보거든, 그가 바로 성령으로 세례를 주시는 분이다.'
34 I have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God.”And I have seen, and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.나는 그것을 보았고, 이분이 하나님의 아들이심을 증언하였다."
35 Again, the next day, John was standing with two of his disciples,Again on the morrow John was standing, and two of his disciples;다시 그 이튿날 요한이 자기 제자 두 사람과 함께 서 있다가,
36 and he looked at Jesus as he walked, and said, “ Behold, the Lamb of God!”and he looked upon Jesus as he walked, and saith, Behold, the Lamb of God!예수께서 걸어가시는 것을 보고 말하였다. "보라, 하나님의 어린양이시다!"
37 The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.그 두 제자가 요한이 하는 말을 듣고 예수를 따라갔다.
38 Jesus turned and saw them following, and said to them, “ What are you looking for?” They said to him, “ Rabbi” ( which is to say, being interpreted, Teacher ), “ where are you staying?”And Jesus turned, and beheld them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? And they said unto him, Rabbi ( which is to say, being interpreted, Teacher ), where abidest thou?예수께서 돌아서서 그들이 따라오는 것을 보시고 물으셨다. "무엇을 찾느냐?" 그들이 말하였다. "랍비여" (번역하면 '선생님'이라는 뜻이다) "어디에 머물고 계십니까?"
39 He said to them, “ Come and see.” They came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day. It was about the tenth hour.He saith unto them, Come, and ye shall see. They came therefore and saw where he abode; and they abode with him that day: it was about the tenth hour.예수께서 그들에게 말씀하셨다. "와서 보아라." 그들이 가서 예수께서 머무시는 곳을 보고, 그날 그분과 함께 머물렀다. 때는 열째 시쯤이었다.
40 One of the two who heard John and followed him was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.One of the two that heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.요한의 말을 듣고 예수를 따라간 두 사람 가운데 하나는 시몬 베드로의 형제 안드레였다.
41 He first found his own brother, Simon, and said to him, “ We have found the Messiah!” ( which is, being interpreted, Christ ).He findeth first his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messiah ( which is, being interpreted, Christ ).그가 먼저 자기 형제 시몬을 찾아 그에게 말하였다. "우리가 메시아를 만났다!" (번역하면 '그리스도'라는 뜻이다)
42 He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “ You are Simon the son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas” ( which is by interpretation, Peter ).He brought him unto Jesus. Jesus looked upon him, and said, Thou art Simon the son of John: thou shalt be called Cephas ( which is by interpretation, Peter ).그가 시몬을 예수께로 데려오니, 예수께서 그를 보시고 말씀하셨다. "너는 요나의 아들 시몬이다. 너는 게바라 불릴 것이다." (번역하면 '베드로'라는 뜻이다)
43 On the next day, he was determined to go out into Galilee, and he found Philip. Jesus said to him, “Follow me.”On the morrow he was minded to go forth into Galilee, and he findeth Philip: and Jesus saith unto him, Follow me.그 이튿날 예수께서 갈릴리로 나가려 하시다가 빌립을 만나 말씀하셨다. "나를 따르라."
44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.Now Philip was from Bethsaida, of the city of Andrew and Peter.빌립은 안드레와 베드로의 고향인 벳새다 사람이었다.
45 Philip found Nathanael, and said to him, “ We have found him of whom Moses in the law and also the prophets, wrote: Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.빌립이 나다나엘을 찾아 그에게 말하였다. "모세가 율법에, 또 선지자들이 기록한 그분을 우리가 만났으니, 곧 요셉의 아들 나사렛 예수이시다."
46 Nathanael said to him, “ Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “ Come and see.”And Nathanael said unto him, Can any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see.나다나엘이 그에게 말하였다. "나사렛에서 무슨 선한 것이 날 수 있겠소?" 빌립이 그에게 말하였다. "와서 보시오."
47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and said about him, “ Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no deceit!”Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!예수께서 나다나엘이 자기에게 오는 것을 보시고 그에 대하여 말씀하셨다. "보라, 참으로 이스라엘 사람이다. 그 속에 거짓이 없도다!"
48 Nathanael said to him, “ How do you know me?” Jesus answered him, “ Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.”Nathanael saith unto him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee.나다나엘이 그분께 말하였다. "어떻게 나를 아십니까?" 예수께서 그에게 대답하셨다. "빌립이 너를 부르기 전, 네가 무화과나무 아래 있을 때에 내가 너를 보았다."
49 Nathanael answered him, “ Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are King of Israel!”Nathanael answered him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art King of Israel.나다나엘이 그분께 대답하였다. "랍비여, 당신은 하나님의 아들이십니다! 당신은 이스라엘의 왕이십니다!"
50 Jesus answered him, “ Because I told you, ‘ I saw you underneath the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these!”Jesus answered and said unto him, Because I said unto thee, I saw thee underneath the fig tree, believest thou? thou shalt see greater things than these.예수께서 그에게 대답하셨다. "내가 너를 무화과나무 아래에서 보았다고 말하였으므로 믿느냐? 너는 이보다 더 큰 일들을 보게 될 것이다!"
51 He said to him, “ Most certainly, I tell you all, hereafter you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye shall see the heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.또 그에게 말씀하셨다. "진실로 진실로 너희에게 이르노니, 이제부터 너희는 하늘이 열리고 하나님의 천사들이 인자 위에 오르락내리락하는 것을 보게 될 것이다."
