2 Then the king’s servants who served him said, “Let beautiful young virgins be sought for the king.Then said the king’s servants that ministered unto him, Let there be fair young virgins sought for the king:그러자 왕을 모시는 신하들이 말했다. "왕을 위하여 아름답고 젊은 처녀들을 찾아보십시오.
3 Let the king appoint officers in all the provinces of his kingdom, that they may gather together all the beautiful young virgins to the citadel of Susa, to the women’s house, to the custody of Hegai the king’s eunuch, keeper of the women. Let cosmetics be given them;and let the king appoint officers in all the provinces of his kingdom, that they may gather together all the fair young virgins unto Shushan the palace, to the house of the women, unto the custody of Hegai the king’s chamberlain, keeper of the women; and let their things for purification be given them;왕께서는 왕국의 모든 지방에 관리들을 세우셔서, 아름답고 젊은 처녀들을 모두 수산 성으로, 곧 여자들의 처소로, 여자들을 맡은 왕의 내시 헤개의 관리 아래로 모으게 하시고, 그들에게 단장할 화장품을 주게 하소서.

7 He brought up Hadassah, that is, Esther, his uncle’s daughter; for she had neither father nor mother. 8 So, when the king’s commandment and his decree was heard, and when many maidens were gathered together to the citadel of Susa, to the custody of Hegai, Esther was taken into the king’s house, to the custody of Hegai, keeper of the women.So it came to pass, when the king’s commandment and his decree was heard, and when many maidens were gathered together unto Shushan the palace, to the custody of Hegai, that Esther was taken into the king’s house, to the custody of Hegai, keeper of the women.왕의 명령과 칙령이 선포되고 많은 처녀들이 수산 성으로, 헤개의 관리 아래로 모일 때에, 에스더도 왕궁으로 데려가져 여자들을 맡은 헤개의 관리 아래에 있게 되었다.
9 The maiden pleased him, and she obtained kindness from him. He quickly gave her cosmetics and her portions of food, and the seven choice maidens who were to be given her out of the king’s house. He moved her and her maidens to the best place in the women’s house.And the maiden pleased him, and she obtained kindness of him; and he speedily gave her her things for purification, with her portions, and the seven maidens who were meet to be given her out of the king’s house: and he removed her and her maidens to the best place of the house of the women.그 처녀가 헤개의 마음에 들어, 그에게서 사랑을 받았다. 헤개는 곧 그에게 화장품과 음식의 몫을 주었고, 왕궁에서 뽑은 일곱 시녀를 그에게 붙여 주었으며, 그와 그의 시녀들을 여자들의 처소에서 가장 좋은 곳으로 옮겨 주었다.
10 Esther had not made known her people nor her relatives, because Mordecai had instructed her that she should not make it known.Esther had not made known her people nor her kindred; for Mordecai had charged her that she should not make it known.에스더는 자기 민족과 친족을 알리지 않았는데, 이는 모르드개가 그것을 밝히지 말라고 당부했기 때문이다.
11 Mordecai walked every day in front of the court of the women’s house, to find out how Esther was doing, and what would become of her.And Mordecai walked every day before the court of the women’s house, to know how Esther did, and what would become of her.모르드개는 에스더가 어떻게 지내는지, 그에게 무슨 일이 일어나는지 알아보려고 날마다 여자들의 처소 뜰 앞을 거닐었다.
12 Each young woman’s turn came to go in to King Ahasuerus after her purification for twelve months ( for so were the days of their purification accomplished, six months with oil of myrrh, and six months with sweet fragrances and with preparations for beautifying women ).Now when the turn of every maiden was come to go in to king Ahasuerus, after that it had been done to her according to the law for the women twelve months ( for so were the days of their purifications accomplished, to wit, six months with oil of myrrh, and six months with sweet odors and with the things for the purifying of the women ),처녀들이 차례로 아하수에로 왕에게 나아가기 전에, 각 처녀는 열두 달 동안 정해진 단장 기간을 거쳐야 했다. 그 단장 기간은 여섯 달은 몰약 기름으로, 여섯 달은 향품과 여자를 곱게 하는 다른 화장품으로 채워졌다.
13 The young woman then came to the king like this: whatever she desired was given her to go with her out of the women’s house to the king’s house.then in this wise came the maiden unto the king: Whatsoever she desired was given her to go with her out of the house of the women unto the king’s house.그렇게 한 뒤에 처녀는 왕에게 나아갔는데, 여자들의 처소에서 왕궁으로 갈 때에 그가 원하는 것은 무엇이든 받아서 가져갈 수 있었다.
14 In the evening she went, and on the next day she returned into the second women’s house, to the custody of Shaashgaz, the king’s eunuch, who kept the concubines. She came in to the king no more, unless the king delighted in her, and she was called by name.In the evening she went, and on the morrow she returned into the second house of the women, to the custody of Shaashgaz, the king’s chamberlain, who kept the concubines: she came in unto the king no more, except the king delighted in her, and she were called by name.처녀는 저녁에 들어갔다가 이튿날 아침에 둘째 여자 처소로, 곧 후궁들을 맡은 왕의 내시 사아스가스의 관리 아래로 돌아왔다. 왕이 그를 특별히 좋아하여 이름을 불러 부르지 않는 한, 그는 다시 왕에게 나아가지 못했다.
15 Now when the turn of Esther, the daughter of Abihail the uncle of Mordecai, who had taken her for his daughter, came to go in to the king, she required nothing but what Hegai the king’s eunuch, the keeper of the women, advised. Esther obtained favor in the sight of all those who looked at her.Now when the turn of Esther, the daughter of Abihail the uncle of Mordecai, who had taken her for his daughter, was come to go in unto the king, she required nothing but what Hegai the king’s chamberlain, the keeper of the women, appointed. And Esther obtained favor in the sight of all them that looked upon her.모르드개의 삼촌 아비하일의 딸로 모르드개가 자기 딸로 삼은 에스더가 왕에게 나아갈 차례가 되었을 때, 그는 여자들을 맡은 왕의 내시 헤개가 일러 준 것 외에는 아무것도 요구하지 않았다. 에스더는 그를 보는 모든 사람의 눈에 사랑을 받았다.
16 So Esther was taken to King Ahasuerus into his royal house in the tenth month, which is the month Tebeth, in the seventh year of his reign.So Esther was taken unto king Ahasuerus into his house royal in the tenth month, which is the month Tebeth, in the seventh year of his reign.이렇게 에스더는 왕이 다스린 지 칠 년째 되는 해 열째 달 곧 데벳월에 왕궁으로, 아하수에로 왕에게로 데려가졌다.
17 The king loved Esther more than all the women, and she obtained favor and kindness in his sight more than all the virgins; so that he set the royal crown on her head, and made her queen instead of Vashti.And the king loved Esther above all the women, and she obtained favor and kindness in his sight more than all the virgins; so that he set the royal crown upon her head, and made her queen instead of Vashti.왕은 다른 모든 여자보다 에스더를 더 사랑하여, 에스더가 모든 처녀보다 왕의 눈에 더 큰 사랑과 은총을 받았다. 그리하여 왕은 그의 머리에 왕관을 씌우고, 와스디 대신 그를 왕비로 삼았다.
18 Then the king made a great feast for all his princes and his servants, even Esther’s feast; and he proclaimed a holiday in the provinces, and gave gifts according to the king’s bounty.Then the king made a great feast unto all his princes and his servants, even Esther’s feast; and he made a release to the provinces, and gave gifts, according to the bounty of the king.그런 다음 왕은 자기의 모든 대신과 신하들을 위하여 큰 잔치를 베풀었으니, 곧 에스더의 잔치였다. 또 왕은 여러 지방에 휴일을 선포하고, 왕의 후한 손길로 선물을 나누어 주었다.
19 When the virgins were gathered together the second time, Mordecai was sitting in the king’s gate.And when the virgins were gathered together the second time, then Mordecai was sitting in the king’s gate.처녀들이 두 번째로 모일 때에, 모르드개는 대궐 문에 앉아 있었다.
20 Esther had not yet made known her relatives nor her people, as Mordecai had commanded her; for Esther obeyed Mordecai, like she did when she was brought up by him.Esther had not yet made known her kindred nor her people; as Mordecai had charged her: for Esther did the commandment of Mordecai, like as when she was brought up with him.에스더는 모르드개가 명한 대로 아직 자기 친족과 민족을 알리지 않았다. 에스더는 모르드개에게서 자랄 때처럼 여전히 그의 말에 순종하고 있었다.
21 In those days, while Mordecai was sitting in the king’s gate, two of the king’s eunuchs, Bigthan and Teresh, who were doorkeepers, were angry, and sought to lay hands on the King Ahasuerus.In those days, while Mordecai was sitting in the king’s gate, two of the king’s chamberlains, Bigthan and Teresh, of those that kept the threshold, were wroth, and sought to lay hands on the king Ahasuerus.그 무렵에 모르드개가 대궐 문에 앉아 있을 때, 문지기였던 왕의 두 내시 빅단과 데레스가 분노하여 아하수에로 왕을 해치려고 음모를 꾸몄다.
22 This thing became known to Mordecai, who informed Esther the queen; and Esther informed the king in Mordecai’s name.And the thing became known to Mordecai, who showed it unto Esther the queen; and Esther told the king thereof in Mordecai’s name.이 일이 모르드개에게 알려지자, 그는 왕비 에스더에게 알렸고, 에스더는 모르드개의 이름으로 왕에게 그 일을 전했다.
23 When this matter was investigated, and it was found to be so, they were both hanged on a gallows; and it was written in the book of the chronicles in the king’s presence.And when inquisition was made of the matter, and it was found to be so, they were both hanged on a tree: and it was written in the book of the chronicles before the king.이 일을 조사해 보니 사실로 드러났으므로, 두 사람은 나무에 매달려 죽었다. 그리고 이 일은 왕 앞에서 역대지략에 기록되었다.
