2 they came near to Zerubbabel, and to the heads of fathers’ households, and said to them, “ Let us build with you, for we seek your God as you do; and we have been sacrificing to him since the days of Esar Haddon king of Assyria, who brought us up here.”then they drew near to Zerubbabel, and to the heads of fathers’ houses, and said unto them, Let us build with you; for we seek your God, as ye do; and we sacrifice unto him since the days of Esar-haddon king of Assyria, who brought us up hither.그러자 그들은 스룹바벨과 각 가문의 지도자들에게 다가와 이렇게 말했다. "우리도 당신들과 함께 성전을 짓게 해 주십시오. 우리도 당신들처럼 당신들의 하나님을 찾으며, 우리를 이곳으로 데려온 앗시리아 왕 에살핫돈 때부터 그분께 제사를 드려 왔습니다."
3 But Zerubbabel, Jeshua, and the rest of the heads of fathers’ households of Israel said to them, “ You have nothing to do with us in building a house to our God; but we ourselves together will build to Yahweh, the God of Israel, as King Cyrus the king of Persia has commanded us.”But Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the heads of fathers’ houses of Israel, said unto them, Ye have nothing to do with us in building a house unto our God; but we ourselves together will build unto Jehovah, the God of Israel, as king Cyrus the king of Persia hath commanded us.그러나 스룹바벨과 예수아와 그 밖의 이스라엘 각 가문의 지도자들은 그들에게 이렇게 말했다. "우리 하나님의 집을 짓는 일에 당신들이 우리와 함께할 몫은 없습니다. 페르시아 왕 고레스가 우리에게 명령한 대로 우리가 직접 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와를 위해 지을 것입니다."

7 In the days of Artaxerxes, Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of his companions wrote to Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the writing of the letter was written in Syrian and delivered in the Syrian language.And in the days of Artaxerxes wrote Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of his companions, unto Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the writing of the letter was written in the Syrian character, and set forth in the Syrian tongue.또 아닥사스다 때에는 비슬람과 미드르닷과 다브엘과 그들의 나머지 동료들이 페르시아 왕 아닥사스다에게 글을 올렸는데, 그 편지의 글은 아람 문자로 쓰였고 아람 말로 풀이되어 있었다.

9 Then Rehum the chancellor, Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their companions, the Dinaites, and the Apharsathchites, the Tarpelites, the Apharsites, the Archevites, the Babylonians, the Shushanchites, the Dehaites, the Elamites,then wrote Rehum the chancellor, and Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their companions, the Dinaites, and the Apharsathchites, the Tarpelites, the Apharsites, the Archevites, the Babylonians, the Shushanchites, the Dehaites, the Elamites,곧 총독 르훔과 서기관 심새와 그 밖의 그들의 동료들, 곧 디나 사람과 아바삿 사람과 다블래 사람과 아바새 사람과 아렉 사람과 바벨론 사람과 수산 사람과 데해 사람과 엘람 사람과,

11 This is the copy of the letter that they sent: To King Artaxerxes, from your servants, the people beyond the River.This is the copy of the letter that they sent unto Artaxerxes the king: Thy servants the men beyond the River, and so forth.이것이 그들이 아닥사스다 왕에게 보낸 편지의 사본이다. "강 건너편에 사는 왕의 종들이 아룁니다.
12 Be it known to the king that the Jews who came up from you have come to us to Jerusalem. They are building the rebellious and bad city, and have finished the walls and repaired the foundations.Be it known unto the king, that the Jews that came up from thee are come to us unto Jerusalem; they are building the rebellious and the bad city, and have finished the walls, and repaired the foundations.왕께 알려 드립니다. 왕께로부터 우리에게로 올라온 유대 사람들이 예루살렘에 이르러, 반역하고 악한 그 성읍을 다시 짓고 있습니다. 그들은 성벽을 완성하고 기초를 보수하였습니다.
13 Be it known now to the king that if this city is built and the walls finished, they will not pay tribute, custom, or toll, and in the end it will be hurtful to the kings.Be it known now unto the king, that, if this city be builded, and the walls finished, they will not pay tribute, custom, or toll, and in the end it will be hurtful unto the kings.이제 왕께 알려 드립니다. 만일 이 성읍이 다시 세워지고 성벽이 완성되면, 그들은 조공도 관세도 통행세도 바치지 않을 것이며, 결국 왕들에게 손해가 될 것입니다.
14 Now because we eat the salt of the palace and it is not appropriate for us to see the king’s dishonor, therefore we have sent and informed the king,Now because we eat the salt of the palace, and it is not meet for us to see the king’s dishonor, therefore have we sent and certified the king;우리가 왕궁의 소금을 먹는 처지이니 왕께서 모욕당하시는 것을 보고만 있는 것은 마땅하지 않습니다. 그래서 우리가 이렇게 사람을 보내어 왕께 알려 드립니다.
15 that search may be made in the book of the records of your fathers. You will see in the book of the records, and know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful to kings and provinces, and that they have started rebellions within it in the past. That is why this city was destroyed.that search may be made in the book of the records of thy fathers: so shalt thou find in the book of the records, and know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful unto kings and provinces, and that they have moved sedition within the same of old time; for which cause was this city laid waste.왕의 조상들의 역사 기록부를 살펴보시기 바랍니다. 그 기록부를 살펴보시면, 이 성읍이 반역하는 성읍이며 왕들과 여러 지방에 손해를 끼치는 곳이고, 예로부터 그 안에서 반란을 일으켜 왔음을 아시게 될 것입니다. 바로 그 때문에 이 성읍이 폐허가 되었습니다.
16 We inform the king that if this city is built and the walls finished, then you will have no possession beyond the River.We certify the king that, if this city be builded, and the walls finished, by this means thou shalt have no portion beyond the River.우리가 왕께 알려 드립니다. 만일 이 성읍이 다시 세워지고 성벽이 완성되면, 그로 인해 왕께서는 강 건너편에서 차지하실 몫이 없게 될 것입니다."
17 Then the king sent an answer to Rehum the chancellor, and to Shimshai the scribe, and to the rest of their companions who live in Samaria, and in the rest of the country beyond the River: Peace.Then sent the king an answer unto Rehum the chancellor, and to Shimshai the scribe, and to the rest of their companions that dwell in Samaria, and in the rest of the country beyond the River: Peace, and so forth.그러자 왕은 총독 르훔과 서기관 심새와 사마리아와 강 건너편 그 밖의 지방에 사는 그들의 나머지 동료들에게 답장을 보냈다. "평안을 빈다. 그리고 알린다.
18 The letter which you sent to us has been plainly read before me.The letter which ye sent unto us hath been plainly read before me.너희가 우리에게 보낸 편지는 내 앞에서 분명하게 낭독되었다.
19 I decreed, and search has been made, and it was found that this city has made insurrection against kings in the past, and that rebellion and revolts have been made in it.And I decreed, and search hath been made, and it is found that this city of old time hath made insurrection against kings, and that rebellion and sedition have been made therein.내가 명령을 내려 조사하게 하였더니, 이 성읍이 예로부터 왕들에게 항거하여 일어났고, 그 안에서 반란과 반역이 행해졌음이 드러났다.
20 There have also been mighty kings over Jerusalem who have ruled over all the country beyond the River; and tribute, custom, and toll was paid to them.There have been mighty kings also over Jerusalem, who have ruled over all the country beyond the River; and tribute, custom, and toll, was paid unto them.또 예루살렘을 다스린 강한 왕들이 있어서 강 건너편의 온 지방을 통치하였고, 사람들이 그들에게 조공과 관세와 통행세를 바쳤다.
21 Make a decree now to cause these men to cease, and that this city not be built until a decree is made by me.Make ye now a decree to cause these men to cease, and that this city be not builded, until a decree shall be made by me.이제 이 사람들에게 일을 멈추라는 명령을 내려, 내가 명령을 내리기 전에는 이 성읍을 다시 짓지 못하게 하라.
22 Be careful that you not be slack doing so. Why should damage grow to the hurt of the kings?And take heed that ye be not slack herein: why should damage grow to the hurt of the kings?이 일에 게으르지 않도록 조심하라. 어찌하여 손해가 자라 왕들에게 해가 되게 하겠느냐?"
23 Then when the copy of King Artaxerxes’ letter was read before Rehum, Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went in haste to Jerusalem to the Jews, and made them to cease by force of arms.Then when the copy of king Artaxerxes’ letter was read before Rehum, and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went in haste to Jerusalem unto the Jews, and made them to cease by force and power.아닥사스다 왕의 편지 사본이 르훔과 서기관 심새와 그들의 동료들 앞에서 낭독되자, 그들은 서둘러 예루살렘에 사는 유대 사람들에게 가서 힘과 권력으로 그들의 일을 멈추게 하였다.
24 Then work stopped on God’s house which is at Jerusalem. It stopped until the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.Then ceased the work of the house of God which is at Jerusalem; and it ceased until the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.그리하여 예루살렘에 있는 하나님의 집을 짓는 일이 중단되었고, 페르시아 왕 다리오가 다스린 지 둘째 해까지 그 일은 중단된 채로 있었다.
