1 See how great a love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God! For this cause the world doesn’ t know us, because it didn’ t know him.Behold what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called children of God; and such we are. For this cause the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.보십시오, 아버지께서 우리에게 얼마나 큰 사랑을 베풀어 주셨는지요. 우리가 하나님의 자녀라 불리게 되었습니다. 그런데 우리가 정말 그러합니다. 세상이 우리를 알지 못하는 것은 세상이 그분을 알지 못했기 때문입니다.
2 Beloved, now we are children of God. It is not yet revealed what we will be; but we know that when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him just as he is.Beloved, now are we children of God, and it is not yet made manifest what we shall be. We know that, if he shall be manifested, we shall be like him; for we shall see him even as he is.사랑하는 여러분, 지금 우리는 하나님의 자녀입니다. 우리가 장차 어떻게 될지는 아직 드러나지 않았습니다. 그러나 그분이 나타나시면 우리도 그분과 같이 될 것을 우리는 압니다. 우리가 그분을 계신 그대로 뵙게 될 것이기 때문입니다.
3 Everyone who has this hope set on him purifies himself, even as he is pure.And every one that hath this hope set on him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.그분 안에 이 소망을 둔 사람은 누구나 그분이 깨끗하신 것과 같이 자기를 깨끗하게 합니다.
4 Everyone who sins also commits lawlessness. Sin is lawlessness.Every one that doeth sin doeth also lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness.죄를 짓는 사람은 누구나 불법도 행하는 것이니, 죄는 곧 불법입니다.
5 You know that he was revealed to take away our sins, and no sin is in him.And ye know that he was manifested to take away sins; and in him is no sin.여러분은 그분이 우리의 죄를 없애려고 나타나셨다는 것을 압니다. 그분 안에는 죄가 없습니다.
6 Whoever remains in him doesn’ t sin. Whoever sins hasn’ t seen him and doesn’ t know him.Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither knoweth him.그분 안에 머무는 사람은 누구든지 죄를 짓지 않습니다. 죄를 짓는 사람은 누구든지 그분을 본 적도 없고 알지도 못하는 사람입니다.
7 Little children, let no one lead you astray. He who does righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.My little children, let no man lead you astray: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous:자녀들이여, 아무도 여러분을 미혹하지 못하게 하십시오. 의를 행하는 사람은 그분이 의로우신 것과 같이 의롭습니다.
8 He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. To this end the Son of God was revealed: that he might destroy the works of the devil.he that doeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. To this end was the Son of God manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.죄를 짓는 사람은 마귀에게 속한 사람이니, 마귀는 처음부터 죄를 지어 왔기 때문입니다. 하나님의 아들이 나타나신 것은 바로 마귀의 일을 멸하시기 위함입니다.
9 Whoever is born of God doesn’ t commit sin, because his seed remains in him, and he can’ t sin, because he is born of God.Whosoever is begotten of God doeth no sin, because his seed abideth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is begotten of God.하나님에게서 난 사람은 누구든지 죄를 짓지 않습니다. 하나님의 씨가 그 사람 안에 머물러 있기 때문입니다. 그는 죄를 지을 수 없으니, 이는 그가 하나님에게서 났기 때문입니다.
10 In this the children of God are revealed, and the children of the devil. Whoever doesn’ t do righteousness is not of God, neither is he who doesn’ t love his brother.In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.이것으로 하나님의 자녀와 마귀의 자녀가 드러납니다. 의를 행하지 않는 사람은 누구든지 하나님께 속하지 않았고, 자기 형제를 사랑하지 않는 사람도 그러합니다.
11 For this is the message which you heard from the beginning, that we should love one another —For this is the message which ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another:여러분이 처음부터 들은 소식은 바로 이것이니, 곧 우리가 서로 사랑해야 한다는 것입니다.
12 unlike Cain, who was of the evil one and killed his brother. Why did he kill him? Because his deeds were evil, and his brother’s righteous.not as Cain was of the evil one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his works were evil, and his brother’s righteous.악한 자에게 속하여 자기 동생을 죽인 가인과 같이 되지 마십시오. 가인이 왜 동생을 죽였습니까? 자기의 행위는 악하고 동생의 행위는 의로웠기 때문입니다.
13 Don’ t be surprised, my brothers, if the world hates you.Marvel not, brethren, if the world hateth you.내 형제 여러분, 세상이 여러분을 미워하더라도 놀라지 마십시오.
14 We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers. He who doesn’ t love his brother remains in death.We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not abideth in death.우리가 형제를 사랑하므로 죽음에서 생명으로 옮겨졌다는 것을 우리는 압니다. 사랑하지 않는 사람은 죽음 안에 머물러 있습니다.
15 Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life remaining in him.Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.자기 형제를 미워하는 사람은 누구든지 살인하는 자입니다. 살인하는 자에게는 영원한 생명이 머물러 있지 않다는 것을 여러분은 압니다.
16 By this we know love, because he laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.Hereby know we love, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.그분이 우리를 위하여 자기 목숨을 내어 주셨으니, 이로써 우리가 사랑을 알게 되었습니다. 우리도 형제들을 위하여 우리의 목숨을 내어 주어야 마땅합니다.
17 But whoever has the world’ s goods and sees his brother in need, then closes his heart of compassion against him, how does God’ s love remain in him?But whoso hath the world’ s goods, and beholdeth his brother in need, and shutteth up his compassion from him, how doth the love of God abide in him?누구든지 세상 재물을 가지고 있으면서 자기 형제가 궁핍한 것을 보고도 그를 향한 긍휼의 마음을 닫아 버린다면, 하나님의 사랑이 어떻게 그 사람 안에 머물겠습니까?
18 My little children, let’s not love in word only, or with the tongue only, but in deed and truth.My little children, let us not love in word, neither with the tongue; but in deed and truth.내 자녀들이여, 우리가 말로만, 혀로만 사랑하지 말고 행함과 진실함으로 사랑합시다.
19 And by this we know that we are of the truth and persuade our hearts before him,Hereby shall we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our heart before him:이것으로 우리가 진리에 속한 줄을 알게 되며, 그분 앞에서 우리 마음을 안심시키게 됩니다.
20 because if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things.because if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.우리 마음이 우리를 책망하더라도, 하나님은 우리 마음보다 크시고 모든 것을 아시기 때문입니다.
21 Beloved, if our hearts don’ t condemn us, we have boldness toward God;Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, we have boldness toward God;사랑하는 여러분, 우리 마음이 우리를 책망하지 않으면 우리는 하나님을 향하여 담대함을 가집니다.
22 so whatever we ask, we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and do the things that are pleasing in his sight.and whatsoever we ask we receive of him, because we keep his commandments and do the things that are pleasing in his sight.그리고 우리가 무엇을 구하든지 그분에게서 받습니다. 이는 우리가 그분의 계명을 지키고 그분이 보시기에 기뻐하시는 일을 행하기 때문입니다.
23 This is his commandment, that we should believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another, even as he commanded.And this is his commandment, that we should believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, even as he gave us commandment.그분의 계명은 이것이니, 곧 우리가 그분의 아들 예수 그리스도의 이름을 믿고, 그분이 우리에게 명하신 것과 같이 서로 사랑하라는 것입니다.
24 He who keeps his commandments remains in him, and he in him. By this we know that he remains in us, by the Spirit which he gave us.And he that keepeth his commandments abideth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he gave us.그분의 계명을 지키는 사람은 그분 안에 머물고 그분도 그 사람 안에 머무십니다. 그분이 우리에게 주신 성령으로 말미암아 그분이 우리 안에 머무신다는 것을 우리는 압니다.
