dik´shun-a-riz : 사전(dictionary)이란 어휘집 또는 단어 목록으로서, 용이한 참조를 위해 일정한 순서(일반적으로 알파벳 순)로 배열되며, 통상 정의나 더 긴 논술을 수반한다. 어휘록(vocabulary) 혹은 용어집(glossary)은 단순한 단어 목록으로 정의가 없는 경우가 많고, 어학 사전(lexicon) 또는 언어(단어·개념) 사전은 간략한 정의만 수록하며, 알파벳순 백과사전 또는 지식·정보 사전(사물, 주제, 토픽 등)은 더 긴 논술을 수록하지만, 이 모두가 사전이다. 근대에 있어 알파벳순 배열이 사전의 핵심 요소이다. 그러나 역사적으로는 사전이 논리적 또는 연대기적 순서를 따라야 한다는 타당한 근거가 없는 것도 아니다. Murray's Dictionary에 인용된 이 단어의 최초 용례(요한네스 드 갈란디아, 약 1225년)는 알파벳순이 아니라 분류된 단어 모음을 가리켰다. 마찬가지로, 영어 최초의 용례 가운데 하나(J. Withal의 *Dictionarie*, 1556년)도 주제별로 분류된 단어집이었다. Roget의 *Thesaurus*처럼 정의 없이 분류된 단어 목록으로 된 책, 또는 Coleridge의 불운한 실험인 *Encyclopedia Metropolitana*처럼 논술의 체계적 백과사전은 역사적 의미에서는 사전이다. 성경 사전 목록에서 통상 처음으로 인용되는 최초의 책들도 실제로는 알파벳순이 아닌 분류적 혹은 연대기적 배열이었다(에우세비오스의 *Onomasticon*, 히에로니무스의 *De viris illustribus*). 알파벳 이전 시대의 분류된 단어 목록, 음절표 등은 물론이고, 오늘날의 중국어 등 비알파벳 언어들에서도 비알파벳 방식이 사용되지만, 이것들도 엄밀히 말하면 사전이다. 알파벳 이전 시대의 사전에는 아시리아, 바빌로니아, 이집트, 키프로스 등에 많은 사례가 있는 음절표와 단어 목록, 왕들의 연대기 목록, 공납이나 천문 혹은 기타 항목의 각종 분류 목록들이 포함된다. 요컨대, 일련의 핵심어를 중심으로 자료가 묶인 모든 목록이 여기에 속한다. 알파벳 사전은 알파벳 자체에서 시작되었으니, 이것이 곧 사물 이름의 목록이기 때문이다. 초기의 알파벳 사전은 때로 'alphabet'이라고도 불렸다. 어떤 의미에서 알파벳 이합체(acrostic) 시편은 이합체라기보다 사전에 가까우며, 각 알파벳 글자 아래 상당한 분량의 내용이 묶인 시편 119편은 사전의 개념에 상당히 근접한다. 문학적 자료의 양이 적을 때에는 알파벳 사전의 발전이 거의 필요하지 않았고, 그 사례도 드물었으며, 수이다스(Suidas)의 어휘사전이 아마도 가장 주목할 만한 예일 것이다. 문학 자료가 방대하게 증가하면서, 특정 주제를 참조하는 목적에 있어 연대기적 또는 체계적 배열보다 알파벳순 배열이 유리하다는 인식이 빠르게 확산되었다. 지식 관련 알파벳 사전의 수는 13세기 이후 학문의 성장과 함께 급격히 늘었고, 이제 어떤 좁은 주제라도 그 정보 사전 하나쯤은 자랑할 수 있을 정도가 되었다. 최초의 성경 사전은 보통 에우세비오스의 *Onomasticon*(지리 백과사전)으로 꼽히며, 이어서 히에로니무스의 *De nominibus hebraicis*와 *De viris illustribus*(연대기적)가 나왔다. 성경 사전의 역사에서 주목할 만한 단계는 알스테트(Alsted), 칼메(Calmet), 비너(Winer), 키토(Kitto), 윌리엄 스미스(William Smith), 페어번(Fairbairn), 쉔켈(Schenkel)의 이름으로 대표된다. 대형 저작 가운데 최근의 우수한 사전으로는 극단적 고등비평의 입장을 대표하는 *Encyclopedia Biblica*, 다소 덜 급진적인 입장의 헤이스팅스(Hastings) 사전, 그리고 19세기 고등비평의 극단적 입장에 대한 커지는 불신을 대표하는 현행 *국제 표준 성경 백과사전(International Standard Bible Encyclopedia)* 이 있다. 이 모두는 대규모로 최신 최고 수준의 학문을 반영하며, 최근의 단권 사전 가운데 적어도 두 종, 즉 M.
