1 The elder to Gaius the beloved, whom I love in truth.The elder unto Gaius the beloved, whom I love in truth.장로인 나는 내가 진리 안에서 사랑하는 가이오에게 이 편지를 씁니다.
2 Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be healthy, even as your soul prospers.Beloved, I pray that in all things thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.사랑하는 이여, 그대의 영혼이 잘되는 것처럼 그대가 모든 일에 잘되고 건강하기를 나는 기도합니다.
3 For I rejoiced greatly when brothers came and testified about your truth, even as you walk in truth.For I rejoiced greatly, when brethren came and bare witness unto thy truth, even as thou walkest in truth.형제들이 와서 그대가 진리 안에서 행하는 것처럼 그대의 진실함을 증언해 주었을 때, 나는 매우 기뻤습니다.
4 I have no greater joy than this: to hear about my children walking in truth.Greater joy have I none than this, to hear of my children walking in the truth.내 자녀들이 진리 안에서 살아가고 있다는 소식을 듣는 것보다 더 큰 기쁨은 내게 없습니다.
5 Beloved, you do a faithful work in whatever you accomplish for those who are brothers and strangers.Beloved, thou doest a faithful work in whatsoever thou doest toward them that are brethren and strangers withal;사랑하는 이여, 그대는 형제들과 나그네들을 위해 무엇을 하든지 신실하게 일하고 있습니다.
6 They have testified about your love before the assembly. You will do well to send them forward on their journey in a way worthy of God,who bare witness to thy love before the church: whom thou wilt do well to set forward on their journey worthily of God:그들은 교회 앞에서 그대의 사랑을 증언했습니다. 그대가 그들을 하나님께 합당한 모습으로 그 여정에 잘 떠나보내 준다면 좋은 일을 하는 것입니다.
7 because for the sake of the Name they went out, taking nothing from the Gentiles.because that for the sake of the Name they went forth, taking nothing of the Gentiles.그들은 그 이름을 위하여 길을 떠나면서 이방 사람들에게서는 아무것도 받지 않았기 때문입니다.
8 We therefore ought to receive such, that we may be fellow workers for the truth.We therefore ought to welcome such, that we may be fellow-workers for the truth.그러므로 우리는 마땅히 이런 사람들을 영접하여 진리를 위해 함께 일하는 동역자가 되어야 합니다.
9 I wrote to the assembly, but Diotrephes, who loves to be first among them, doesn’ t accept what we say.I wrote somewhat unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not.내가 교회에 편지를 써 보냈으나, 그들 가운데서 으뜸이 되기를 좋아하는 디오드레베가 우리가 하는 말을 받아들이지 않습니다.
10 Therefore, if I come, I will call attention to his deeds which he does, unjustly accusing us with wicked words. Not content with this, he doesn’ t receive the brothers himself, and those who would, he forbids and throws out of the assembly.Therefore, if I come, I will bring to remembrance his works which he doeth, prating against us with wicked words: and not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and them that would he forbiddeth and casteth them out of the church.그러므로 내가 가게 되면, 그가 행하는 일들을 드러내 보일 것입니다. 그는 악한 말로 우리를 부당하게 비방하고, 그것으로도 만족하지 못하여 자기도 형제들을 영접하지 않으며, 영접하려는 사람들마저 가로막고 교회에서 쫓아냅니다.
11 Beloved, don’ t imitate that which is evil, but that which is good. He who does good is of God. He who does evil hasn’ t seen God.Beloved, imitate not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God: he that doeth evil hath not seen God.사랑하는 이여, 악한 것을 본받지 말고 선한 것을 본받으십시오. 선을 행하는 사람은 하나님께 속한 사람이요, 악을 행하는 사람은 하나님을 보지 못한 사람입니다.
12 Demetrius has the testimony of all, and of the truth itself; yes, we also testify, and you know that our testimony is true.Demetrius hath the witness of all men, and of the truth itself: yea, we also bear witness; and thou knowest that our witness is true.데메드리오는 모든 사람과 진리 그 자체에게서 좋은 증언을 받고 있습니다. 우리도 또한 증언하니, 그대는 우리의 증언이 참된 것임을 압니다.
13 I had many things to write to you, but I am unwilling to write to you with ink and pen;I had many things to write unto thee, but I am unwilling to write them to thee with ink and pen:내가 그대에게 쓸 말이 많지만, 먹과 펜으로 쓰고 싶지는 않습니다.
14 but I hope to see you soon. Then we will speak face to face. Peace be to you. The friends greet you. Greet the friends by name.but I hope shortly to see thee, and we shall speak face to face. Peace be unto thee. The friends salute thee. Salute the friends by name.그대를 곧 만나 얼굴을 마주하고 이야기하기를 바랍니다. 그대에게 평강이 있기를 빕니다. 여기 친구들이 그대에게 안부를 전합니다. 그곳 친구들에게도 한 사람 한 사람 이름을 불러 안부를 전해 주십시오.
