The Canaanites are most probably descendants of Canaan.
The explorers sent out by Moses into the land of Canaan, discovered, that they lived near the sea and along the Jordan in the land of Canaan. After some rioting against God by the Israelites, they decided to attack the Amalekites and Canaanites even though God was not for them. As a result, the Amalekites and Canaanites defeated the attacking Israelites.
A while later, when the Israelites were walking to Atharim, Arad, king of Canaan, attacked them. The Israelites then asked God to deliver the Canaanites and destroyed them. The place was then called Hormah.
God then told the Israelites to destroy the Canaanites completely.
