Esau ♂ (hairy ) also known as Edom (red ), is the father of the Edomites.
Before his and Jacob's birth, God talked to Rebekah. He told her, that there are two peoples growing in her womb. This two peoples would be separated and the older (Esau) would serve the younger (Jacob).
Esau was a hunter and because of this loved by his father Isaac.
One day, Esau came back from hunting and was very hungry. So he asked Jacob for some of the stew, that Jacob had made. But Jacob would only give him the stew after Esau had sold his birthright to Jacob. Esau agreed to do this and got some bread and some lentil stew.
Because the land, where Jacob and Esau lived, could not suppor them both, Esau went to the hill country of Seir.
When Isaac was old, he sent Esau out to hunt some wild game for him. He promised Esau to bless him. But Rebekah who heard this, told Jacob to get some goats. She then cooked it and changed Jacobs clothes and skin. So Jacob went in, served the food and got the blessing. When Esau got back from his hunting, Isaac could not give him any other blessings. So Esau became subject to Jacob's rule. But Isaac prophesied, that Esau would one day throw the yoke from his neck.
Esau then wanted to kill Jakob but Jacob fled. Rebekah told Jacob and Isaac, that Jacob should get a wife from his own kind. This was when Esau realized, that his gentile wives displeased his father and he married Mahalath, daughter of Ishmael.
When Jacob came back after many years, Esau had forgiven him. He met Jacob with great joy. Jacob gave Esau many gifts hoping that Esau would give up plans to kill Jacob. But Esau did not even want to accept this gifts. But after being urged by Jacob he did finally accept the gifts. Esau then went back to the land of Seir.
